Ask For Help

a Movies Social start-up

Dear Fellow Entrepreneurs 🙂

I had this thought that movies is one of the most talked about subjects in the world, and there is perhaps a need and an opportunity for a Movies Social. The ideas that followed and the possibilities that came forth excited me enough to get onto the job right away!

I think I have a minimum viable product ready, please check out movienation.in. It’s still a bare bones version of what I really want it to be, and has it’s share of glitches and rough edges! But nevertheless, I feel we are on the right track, as far as the product is concerned. Please do tell me, if you think otherwise.

As of now, we do a couple of things

a) Aggregate reviews, videos, pictures, synopsis and movie details.

b) Provide a Facebook Integration, generating cool personalized posters on Facebook for users movie reviews or a couple of other actions that can done on the product. The posters can look like this:I am more of a programmer, and at the moment a little confused about the business possibilities of what I am doing. There are a plethora of ideas, and a plethora of doubts.

What do all of you think of the possibilities for me ?

What should be the way forward ?

How much to focus on further development ? Or do we work to get some traction first ?

Would people be interested in investing in us ?

I want to thank Alok Kejriwal for setting up this community and for being kind enough to arrange a call with his Koimoi Team. Sir, you ROCK! I am really looking forward to the call with Mukul, and to responses from all of you.

Cheers

Manish

  1. Hi Manish,

I tried something similar. Called it off.

    You can give me a call at +91 844 736 3077

    Regards,

  2. If you make this on goodreads model, people will keep coming to it. Goodreads has a tremendous pull because you want to know what your friends are reading and what are their reviews. Since this is movies, it should work even better. There are two ways to look at such a platform, 1) what are people saying about a particular movie (ie movie-centric); and 2) which movies are your friends talking about (ie social network like goodreads). While you have worked on the first issue, this thing could go viral if you work on the second one. You could try that. In future, you could  think of a tie up with bookmyshow, where after every ticket sale they can send a link to the movie goer to review the movie on your site (that’s how booking.com does for hotels), and those reviews can come on bookmyshow.

  3. thanks Prateek, very useful talking to you 🙂

  4. Rishabh, I agree.

  5. I manage digital marketing for one of the movie review sites. I see some similarities as well as some synergies with your model. One piece of advice: You have to zero in on your monetization plan as well as your monetary goals. If interested to discuss further, give me a call at 9910860100.

  6. Thanks for approaching me. I hope team koimoi grabs you before someone else 🙁

  7. Preeti – can you send me a mail on alok@rodinhood.com and cc mukul@koimoi.com basis what you do for this site (if you are interested)!?

  8. Will do, Alok

  9. It was really helpful talking to you Preeti 🙂 It’s amazing to see such a lively helping community out here.. wow is the word!! 🙂

  10. Thanks Manish. You can pay it forward now! 🙂

  11. I thought the site functionality is awesome – especially like the posters to share my opinion 🙂

I love movies – as such a user, I dont see a significant differentiator on your site that would want me to come back 🙁  There are too many sites offering the same data.

To be honest, when I read your URL, I thought you would be a site for short-story movie makers.  Or a community of movie lovers.

  12. thank you Mahesh 🙂

I am glad you liked the functionality, and I agree there is nothing new we have on offer when it comes to data. I am hoping the product would evolve to a full blown movies social and we will have a healthy community of movie lovers.

  13. Do you think it’s worth hanging in there and develop the product further ? Or focus to get some traction and hopefully some revenues with what we have so far ? or go around checking if someone would want to invest ? 🙂
