Any Paan waala in the house?? Need some guidance for startup in paan retailing.

Hey friends, i am looking for some guidance in Paan industry. Basically i want to start retailing of different variety/flavors of paans at multiple locations in single city giving it a trustable brand name in market. I have some queries before starting for which i would need some guidance:

1. Is there any seasonal trend in sale of paans? (Like its sales decrease/increase in winters?)

2. How to present/create market of paan for females and children? (As market for females/girls & kids don’t exist as of now or is very less)

3. I would be introducing many paans in frozen category?? Will that be accepted to customers?

4. Any suggestion for unique variety/flavor of paan??

Pl let me know if anybody is having any kind of reference with paan waalas. Would be thankful for any type of help related to manufacturing, marketing, packaging of paans.

  1. hey mukat – do you have a twitter handle? add it at the end – will help while tweeting your post.

where are you located? add that to the post as well.

am going to ping all the gujjus and paan lovers (including alok) i know for this one…!

    ps: how is mithigaraari doing?

    https://www.therodinhoods.com/forum/topics/mithigaraari-com-first-online-venture-for-home-delivery-of

  2. mukat – don’t target kids. even if you make a child-friendly paan as an innovation, i still think it’s not a good idea. yes, women prefer meetha paan – i love a good paan, but don’t think i’d encourage my child to have one….

  3. Hi Asha mam- I don’t have any twitter handle as of now, further i am going to start for this paan concept in Gurgaon….Further, mithigaraari is doing good, it’s been almost 6 months since we have launched….now working further to expand as winters are also approaching nearby…!!!

  4. Literally i was thinking to take this as a theme (Differently for both kids and girls/women)…..and whats the issue in that if i launch 1 or 2 categories for kids (with use of just saunf, little gulkand, some add ons like gems, chocolate, sm “kinder joy” type thing inside betel leaf)……i just want to understand why we people still treat Paan as only “men” dish and not an item for complete family …..(even though all the ingredients used are good for our digestion and health as we will be not using “supari” for any of our paans)….!!!

  5. Paan is generally a after dinner digestant. Most of the Paanwallas have their shops adjoining Restaurants. These would hardly be places for Ladies or children. So you have generally men and boys who do the honors. Also Paan is linked with cigarettes (Paan, Beedi as they are referred to) so parents would not like the kids exposed to Paan, Beedi(clubbed and banned items). What you should do is design a Paan Kiosk. This would replace existing Tray type arrangement. It should have a small sink for washing hands. You should have Mobile Order service with a 30 minutes ordering time so customer need not wait. You must have smaller outlets outside each Society in a big city first. I can design the kiosk and have the same shipped to India from the USA. If interested let me know suresh. My Email is suresh.singlewatts@gmail.com

  6. Hi Mukat

I don’t have great idea about paan, but one flavour i would like to share with u is “Chacolate Paan” it is just masala paan dipped in liquid chocolate and dried, we use to get in my place Hubli i don’t know where he moved now this flavour used to be liked my wife and her friends …so it was must when use to go out weekends…

i think if u do some research and find the need at family, n find supply chain then it works

    All the best

  7. Hi suresh, thnks for feedback….but would like to know if i distinguish Paan waalas from beedi/cigarette waala, will it help me to create good market for ladies/women and kids….regrading the kiosk system will contact you thru mail…!!!

  8. thnks for feedback prasad sir……working on same concept only..!!!

  9. Hey rodinhoods, Waiting for some more feedbacks…!!!

  10. paanwaala.in is available – grab it!

  11. Hi Mukat,

Paan retailing sounds like a great plan to me. Paan shops in many cities in India, usually are monopolized by male customers.A lot of times females who are fond of any kind of paan, like meetha paan and other tobacco free varieties cannot access them. To create a market for females, you will need to provide easy and safe access to females. This would require opening exclusive shops in good locations.

As far as I know, flavored pans are picking up momentum. There are a couple of dedicated stores in various cities around India which sell varieties of paans like chocolate paan, mango paan, white chocolate paan, strawberry paan and other innovative varieties. These shops are pretty popular. Once such famous one is in Colaba ( Mumbai).Have you considered opening an online store for paan?

I am from Zepo and we provide a platform for all such businesses. Recently, chotuchaiwala.com, a website which sells tea subscription online, opened a store on Zepo.

I feel that having an online store will have a few advantages.

    – You can contact with some paan walas in cities where you would like to sell to and slowly expand the network. You can make sure that the paan is quality controlled and is sold from good specific vendors you have tie ups with. ( As Asha said that she may be able to help you with some names J)

    – You can cater to a larger number of customers in different areas and it will be a great option for all female customers as they can just order pan to their homes and workplace.

    – The cost of running an online store will be lesser than a physical store.

If you need any help with setting up an ecommerce business, then you can feel free to contact me or our team.

Looking forward to having to some great and hygienic paan!

  12. I know many friends who dislike frozen and want it to be Fresh made as well .

Kids eat meetha mawa – all stuff without the paan leaf.

women eat it without supaari , chunaa.

I cant see innovation happening in paan segment somehow .

still if i stretch my mind – How about Furtune cookie paan ?

It will have a small surprise gift/coupon/tatoo cartoon, slogan  in the packet of the paan.

also – maybe healthy paan – its not for fun but for health and will only have spices known to do wonders for health like cardamom , clove etc.

also maybe – coffee paan !!

I think i should stop writing now.

    TC

    Karan
