Bandit of Bengal – game based on real Dacoits

Once upon a time, Bengal’s dreaded bandits used to announce their arrival with the blood-curdling “Ha re re re” cry that had an immobilizing effect on the victims.

The history of northern, central and eastern bengal is studied with the names of notorious and outlawed dacoits who roamed the hills in the name of Kali, robbing the rich, comforting the poor, and in general spreading terror and rough justice.

Like Robinhood, they used to rob the people who have a lot of money mainly “Jamindars” and then help the poor people in United Bengal. Even East India company was not at all comfortable with these type of Dacoits who used to have “Lathi” as a weapon and “Ron-Pa” two long bamboo stick to walk faster.   In 18th century, there flourished a notorious dacoit, Raghu, for whose capture Government had offered a handsome reward. But like Robin Hood of old, Raghu Dacoit had caught popular fancy by his generosity to the poor. Though he looted the rich, to the needy, the famine-stricken and widows he was always kind. No one would inform against him. The person actually became so popular that with his name we do have a place called Raghunathpur.

Raghu dacoit Kalibari is located in Kanchrapara, a place near north section of 24 Parganas in West Bengal.

We have used real actors and actress to make this game so that the characters look real as Bengali and the actors become an avatar within the game. We are trying to make the game realistic hence went to some of the nearby village to have an idea about old Bengal environment and  Staff fighting. Initially we thought to make the game as RPG, but then we thought to give the Android users a small size game with a basic understanding of stuff fighting and old villages of Bengal

Some of the popular characters from the game are :

1. Raghu Dakat 2. Rana Dakat 3. Bishe Dakat 4. Devi Chaudhurani etc.

  1. Good one, Arijit! Good to see your post about Robin Hoods on The Rodinhoods 🙂

There are interesting stories around these characters as well. Devi Chaudhurani is a popular character of a novel by Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay which has been filmed as well. Good that you are bringing them up.
