Carrier billing system in india

I am thinking of an idea in which I will sell e-contents(magazines/books) from apps.

However, I am facing problem in payment gateway. I researched a lot and these are the things I want to discuss

1. iOS Apps

Apple guidelines say that you don’t require to integrate our own payment gateway in case you are selling non-physical goods. That said, my goods comes into digital goods. So, If I integrate Gateway then would apple reject the app?

– Is selling ebooks not allowed in iOS app?

– What if I want to sell something for rs 20 or rs 90.In in-app purchase I am  tied to apple price band  like .99$(approx 60Rs) and in multiple for that ?

2. Gateway

I was in favour of carrier billing but they have hell lot of charges. 30%+15% DOT charges+ 5%service provider. How can I support 70%(50%+20% my margin) margin in e-content ???

Please share in your experience.

Thanking you in advance

  1. We faced issues like this.

Apple will 1000% reject the app if you integrate any payment gateway other than In-App purchases. They are pretty serious about this and will go to all extent possible to protect their own revenue source. Also, In app is not cheap – 30% charge + 60 day settlement period. But on the flip side – this will provide an awesome customer experience and paying customers will love your app. And yes, you have to follow Apple price bands. Look at it this way – if you paying 30% margin, you’d better sell high ticket items rather than 20 rs items.

Don’t have much experience in carrier billing – but personally think it’s not very evolved in India.

  2. Carrier billing is going back to the dark ages. Don’t even think about it.

Payments take months to come and they are always lesser than the records

  3. Though Instamojo and Easemysell and many more are on the same Domain.

    Hope this Helps! Cheers!!

  4. We dont have any other options left. What should we do when we want to reach to lot of people ? still lot of people dont have cards with them

  5. Hi Alekh,

Truth be told, Apple won’t allow any other payment for digital content other than through IAP. Honestly, tying up with IAP will give you a lot more power than doing it yourself. Here’s why:

    1. One click payments. Users know how this works, and trust Apple, more than they will trust your app. Failed payments are like unknown.
    2. Works seamlessly.
    3. Available on all devices. You don’t have to worry about who bought what. Apple’s APIs will do that for you!
  6. Hi Alekh,

Do check out http://www.kyash.com if you have cash paying customers. We currently have ~20K payment centers across India and will be aggressively expanding our network in the coming months. Charges are much lower and settlement is faster. 🙂 Happy to provide more information if interested.

[YS Meetup] App monetization through carrier billing, how Newshunt and PK Online are making it possible

The unprecedented growth of smartphone and tablet adoption and consistent decline in desktop/pc sales shows that the way forward to engage with the end consumers will be with the APP approach.

In the PC era, we began with simple individual applications for word processing, image editing and system monitoring, etc and then came the era of software suites which were a bunch of applications bundled together. Enter the smartphone and tablet era, and we are back to individual applications more commonly known as ‘apps’ which have a very focused objective. It has to be light, robust, super fast, and efficient and has to provide very good user experience – the scope of error and time to adapt to user requirements has drastically reduced for developers in the mobile and tablet era.

To add to this challenge, app monetization has become a big concern for most developers. Barring a few top developers there are hardly any who are generating good revenues from theirs app. Apart from paid apps, the top app monetization strategies have been — Freemium model, In-App Purchase, In-App Advertising and off late Incentivized advertising.

Given that less than two percent of Indians have access to credit cards, it makes it even more difficult for Indian app developers to monetize using one of the above models. With Apple and Google taking the lion’s share of the revenues emerging from app monetization many telcos around the world have been eyeing to get a share in the pie given that they already are the last mile connect with app users unless they are on wi-fi. In India, Airtel, Vodafone and Idea are already looking at building technology platforms in conjunction with their existing carrier systems to enable more app distribution, usage and monetization.

In this context we are happy to share success stories on how some emerging Indian businesses like Newshunt and PK Online have been able to leverage these APIs exposed by telcos in empowering their users to transact online (through mobile) without having the need to own a credit card through carrier billing.

This Saturday come listen to the Newshunt and PK Online story on how they successfully implement their billing solution in their app through Vodafone’s carrier billing API.
