Cook food for strangers-An Airbnb for food lovers ?

Hi Friends,

I like to validate one idea and need your opinions about it.

Invite a stranger for a special Babette’s Feast @ your home/office, make people happy with great food and experience with your personal touch.

Scenario :-

(Ms. Chooseurself just returned from NYC and she is always complaining about boring, monotonous food culture of capital )

Ms.Chooseurself : Let us go out and eat Sushi tonight ?

Mr.Mangoman : (Ahh…I have to take a personal loan to full fill your exotic food dreams) …Sushi is boring babe, let us go to Dominos and than I will play Tampopo .

But one can’t satisfy a foodie mind with movies or master-chefs, so Ms. B decided to start a home-restro by herself as she is a very good host and cook.

After hosting a lot of people she decided to go out and create a community.

That’s how Ms.Chooseurself created “osome.in” (awesome feast).

This will be my start-up story if this idea gathers its validation, I am Anuj from Noida (not a big foodie or cook but have seen people struggling to get good food). Your suggestions, opinions are most welcome.

Thanks,

Anuj

  1. hey anuj,

    i love your idea.

    some quick suggestions –

    – find a co-founder who is essentially a FOODIE! to me it’s incongruous to be in the food biz if you aren’t a foodie yourself!!! (not being able to cook is pardonable) but ideally find someone who knows her/his food to partner with you.

    – initially start with one type of cuisine. if you’re gonna do great italian food – do awesome italian food and no manchurian.

i suggest you connect with perzen (bawi bride) who specialises in parsi food. she is a case study on trhs as to how she started up from a blog to become a foodpreneur!

    – we have quite a few foodpreneurs and lots of rodinhooders from the travel space. you must connect with the travel gang to help you get clientele after starting up!!

    all the best.

  2. This is definitely a unique idea and has received positive responses so far.

https://plateculture.com/ and https://mealtango.com are 2 of the platforms that have had some success in India.

The biggest challenge that remains is ofcourse ,establishing a diverse network and  addressing people’s skepticism regarding the background of the people who would be coming to their houses.

  3. Thanks Smit for your suggestions.

  4. Asha,

    Thanks for awesome suggestions.

I will try to connect with all foodpreneurs in here.

  5.  A very good Model and some people are doing it already… But more due to the expertise they have a chef.

One gets to have the best of Food, Pay Normal Charges(Say compared to a 5 Star/Restaurant where you have similar meal), sit in the comfort of a Cosy place… And if the event is open for all… then probably make some good friends too.

  6. Things that one needs to take care is…..
Fixed menu…. In order to avoid wastage and control Costs.
Menu/Cuisines should not be repeated… so people can keep coming often.
Small Amount/Advance to be taken online… so no one ditches at the last time and it effects profits

One can have Bring your Own bottle (BYOB) on select nights…. (Have to be very selective in allowing it)
    Fixed Times.

And at the End tasty Food and Word of Mouth is all that matters.
And if you can give us that… Then I may not think twice to drive from West Delhi to NOIDA to be there at your place.

    Best Wishes!!

  7. Anuj,

Here is an example of an actual home restaurant. https://www.facebook.com/SamsPersianKitchen

Not sure if this is what you had in mind.

Btw, why would you want to go into the food industry if you aren’t a foodie yourself ?

  8. Thanks Gurpreet bhai awesome suggestions and great insight.

I will invite you on dinner soon 🙂

  9. @ Abhik Thanks for sharing the link.

Everybody loves a good meal and I also like to taste different cuisines that’s the reason of this idea.

  10. Shall Wait 🙂

  11. Hi Anuj !!

this might give u some perspective…

https://imly.in/… cheers and good luck !!

  12. Hey Anuj,

Am a bit unclear on what your idea is as it seems to be two different things. The first could be about you creating a platform where hosts can connect with guests and have people over to their house for a home cooked meal – similar to mealtango or even onceuponmykitchen.com

The second idea here is that a person comes to your kitchen and cooks for you – this is similar to what many home chefs offer as a service where they go to people’s homes and either teach them cooking or cook for them. However, I have not heard of a formal platform to connect the two as yet so this second option may be interesting for you to explore. You could even approach restaurants to see if they would like to do a catered table at a guests’ home…

However, I agree with Asha – being a big time foodie or having someone on your founding team who is one is key

  13. gunjan/anuj,

abhishek of imly is a rodinhooder – check interviews – perzen interviewed him!

  14. Neeta Valecha of Mealtango.com from Pune with Hubby and Co founder Saket Khanna is also a RH 🙂

From the Social and Spiritual Nithya Shanti Family. Both with Technology as a background now in the Food Industry.

MealTango is a web based product of Albatross Innovations Pvt. Ltd. We help travelers and food aficionados experience culture through food, in ways that was not possible before. Our team consists of entrepreneurs and industry veterans that are looking to revolutionize the way you can meet people and enjoy food.

You can also check Rajeev Roy’s Idea he is from Delhi too, if you can catch up with him

100 Covers Restaurant without a Single Table & Chair ! POSSIBLE?

You should also look into the TECHnological options now available with Food 3D Printers available as well.

PS: Ms.Chooseurself created osome.in” but does not seem to be Live yet 🙂

  15. Thanks Perzen for your suggestions.

Second idea is what I initially planned so will do more research on that model.

  16. @Darshan thanks for introducing Mr. Rajeev, he executed Kopcha so well :-). I am going to dine-in there.

As Ms. Chooseurself is still in idea validation stage that’s why osome.in is sleeping.

  17. Hey Anuj!

You should check this startup https://mealtango.com/

Its on the similar lines to your idea

  18. Safety, hygiene, ambiance, monetisation of service are the key issues in this.

  19. Hey Anuj!! Connect with me : kr.innovate@gmail.com ASAP!! Have an interesting survey to share.

  20. Have you heard of Rachel Khoo, who does the show, “My Little Paris Kitchen” on TLC? She started off with something like this- she cooked French food (with her own twist) for Parisians in her tiny flat, posted about the upcoming dates online and asked for a small charge. Soon reservations at her restaurant were more difficult to get than at the most sought after restaurants in Paris. She ended up writing a cookbook and got a tv show deal with BBC.

  21. I think your idea is already validated

    https://www.eatfeastly.com

I am not sure how well Feastly is doing, but I love the concept. I haven’t tried it yet. Will post here if I ever do give Feastly a try

  22. hey anuj,

what’s happening on this? have you moved ahead yet??
