Digital Marketing Handbook for Everyone!

Being from a design background, SEO, PPC, Social Media were like rocket science to me. I would always try to speak to my friends or colleague (experts in this field) to gain some knowledge about current trend, tricks to improve traffic etc, but they would not share much needed details. Hence I felt this handy note picked-up from my personal experience would help others too.

Everyone speaks about digital marketing and what are the activities required to be carried out to improve traffic. People new to this field or not aware about it might be confused on how and what need to be done. Hence in order to help them, I am sharing some tips that should help to improve search engine presence and drive more traffic to website/blog etc.

I would cover topics like :

  • Basic of Social Media
  • Basic of Google Adwords

Basic of SEO:

Few basic steps:

  1. Setup Google Analytic Account – www.google.com/analytics and update the analytic code across the website.
  2. Setup Google Webmaster Account – https://www.google.com/webmasters/
  3. Upload your sitemap on Google Webmaster Account – You can generate XML sitemap from either of these website – https://www.xml-sitemaps.com/ or https://www.web-site-map.com/
  4. Update your Meta Data.
  5. Fix Conical – See attach .htaccess (for linux hosting) and web.config (for windows hosting) files. Replace domain.com with your own domain name.

Meta Data Updating Guideline :

  1. Update all your pages with unique meta data.
  2. Ensure you meet seo guideline for title (approx 60 character), description (approx 180 character) and keywords. (approx 220 character)
  3. The page title / description and keyword should be relevant to page content.
  4. Use your Google Webmaster Account to verify and fix title, description and keyword duplication issues or any other errors identified by Googlebot.

Tips for writing correct title:

  1. Page title plays a very critical role, hence they should be written very carefully.
  2. Use text phrase like “Leading eCommerce Development Company in India”. 
  3. If you wish to use keyword phrase use ” | ” instead of ‘ , ‘ something like eCommerce Company | Website Design India
  4. It is advisable that you don’t repeat the same word while writing the keywords, since Google is smart enough to create multiple phrases using your set of keywords.

Use WooRank (FREE for 14 days) https://www.woorank.com/ to check the quality of your website and SEO Score.

Block Spam Referral URL:

Block following urls by going to Google Analytic > Admin > Properties > Tracking info > Referral Exclusion List

Important Guideline for SEO:

  1. Introduce approx 10 to 20 pages of new content (this can increase no standard guideline) every month – targeting new keywords.
  2. Ensure keywords are spread across the website.

If you have an eCommerce store and would like to improve your SEO, take some advantage of technology to optimize your website 99%. 

  • Set standard rules using technology to set automatic keyword / description / keyword for each product either based on category or individually.
  • You can take help of your development partner to help you optimize the product – e.g. if you have 4000+ products, optimizing them manually is difficult and optimizing them on single rule might not work since they would fall under different categories.

Social Media Basics

  1. People would suggest that you should use tools like Hootsuite etc, they are extremely good, but the major problem that I feel is url shortener.
  2. I don’t suggest using URL Shorting, since you don’t get link benefit through Facebook / Twitter etc if you use any URL url shortener like https://goo.glhttps://bitly.com/ etc
  3. Use HootSuite etc for general update etc if you are updating product or category page, post some of these manually or use software that don’t use url shortener.
  4. Update post on daily bases or every alternative day. You should post Quiz, Knowledge Sharing Articles, Customer Education Articles, Products Updates etc to improve engagement. 
  5. Set a basic budget to promote your post – an avg 10 to 15k budget to start with.
  6. Update your activities on Facebook / Twitter and Google Plus.

Google Adwords Basic

To get instant traffic on your website Google Adword is the best tool.

  1. Setup your Google Adword Account – https://www.google.co.in/adwords/
  2. Setup your Adword – Billing Details
  3. Now Setup you Campaign – set your daily budget / keyword / ads and start / end date of Campaign
  4. Setup your negative keyword list – Negative keyword list will help your optimize your campaign, like keyword help show your ads, negative help you hide the ads for irrelevant keywords.
  5. Implement Adword Conversion script.
  6. Monitor your adword performance in google analytic to optimize bounce rate and optimize your negative keyword list etc – for further details read through – https://support.google.com/adwords/
