My grandfather could neither read nor write and he set us a business empire one can only imagine in today’s world.

  1. do we agree that education is not mandatory ,yet do not wish to put this in writing ???

  2. Things were different then. Things are different now.

Getting degrees are not for setting up business. Its for building the roots of knowledge that will eventually help you build one.

  3. I feel that education is important..Natural talent can take you to a point( You are a raw product) but formal education would give you lot of insights.

I see few posts about entrepreneurs not needing MBA, but i feel that having additional knowledge won’t hurt .There is this “opportunity cost” which we don’t realise what we are missing.

There are a lot of examples of people making it BIG without education/MBA , but I will beg to differ.

I am a BE and very technical and struggle to get the marketing/sales/accounts/balance sheet concepts.I try to read up (including this forum) ,but find it difficult to put pieces together. So may be just 1 year/6 months of basic introduction to world of finance/management would have helped. You can then build on those fundamentals in your life as you go along.

Finally, life is about 3 colours:

1)White:Things you know , you know -This is fine

2)Black:Things you know , you don’t know. This is fine as you can over come this

3)Grey-:Things you don’t know even exist(you dont even know – what you don’t know). This is a killer and its important to convert this grey area into black area.

Formal education transfers “grey”  to “black” area. You can then convert it into “white” at your pace

    My 2 cents

  4. would you say that those with degrees have a better hold on business ?

  5. i most certainly agree with you ,I being a Surgeon would have been incapable of anything had I not been educated in my field of study and profession .However ,when I see   young men  studying  to make .as you say ”grey to black” ,whilst their father learning the same through years of practical training …akin to hands on experience rather than book knowledge …i find that the fathers did well too…i do not deny that education will help ,but i tend to peruse whether the same couldve been  better achieved by practical market training ,rather than theoretical knowledge …
