How long can internet feed your stomach ?

I believe all digital entrepreneurs grow within a span of 0-5 years. They have an idea, find a person to implement it or do it themseleves, with a motto to give internet user coming in their website a better experience and pocket in some money.

But how long can internet be your mode of income 15-20yrs ? What next ?
Many of them turn out to be investors or make another similar firm.

Way back I used to use yahoo messengers then I got introduced to orkut then facebook, twitter and now instagram… Infact I hardly use facebook, may be just to update status or if I get any notifications. Similar is with my friends we hardly chat using facebook. May be after 5 years I wont be using facebook just like what I am doing with yahoo messenger. These are big players, but what about the small ones ?

So my basic question is how long can a website remain active ? How long it can remain to be big ? With website making such a ease these days & upcoming entrepreneurs… Where is the future ?

Also in digital world the game is won by one who first gets the idea first and execute it first !
I feel after 20 years maximum the website will start dying (decrease in usage by users). Thats my take, what say ?

Pl contradict and would love if you prove me wrong !

  1. good question!

  2. Harshit – Good Question  as far as from my experience, few things will remain standard

    1) Email – in future might get integrated with mobile, where you can send sms too through email in a better way

    2) Youtube – Store – Edit – View Videos, and latest you can even view live cricket, so in future where you can live cast a marriage or any other event

    3) Google –  Cool Stuff for each and every Task be it social media, calender, tasks, wallet or what ever

Basically i see in future, people use those which are important, and others will remain calm or die . Right now we are seeing few e commerce companies shutting down, so in future only those with content and better service to customer will live and others die..  It takes time but its the truth..

  3. Thank you sir ! 😀

  4. Dear Harshit

While, I feel that the lifespan of an Internet company has decreased in last 3-5 years, I also feel we should place companies into separate categories like

    • Utility – email, e-comm etc
    • Fun – social apps, games, lifestyle etc

If we look closely, the lifespan of different categories differ – most of us would have same email-ID we’ve created 8-10 years back. However, during this time we’ve switched to multiple social networking sites.

Innovation, purpose are obvious driving factors that help companies grow and survive longer.

  5. I think a website can remain active as long as it keeps innovating. The company needs to keep up with changing technology and user habits. For example, we do not use yahoo messenger but we still use a lot of other yahoo products. The company is still very much active it is just the product that died, perhaps because they failed to switch to mobile at the right time.

  6. IMHO, it is quite a growing field, especially for someone who can introduce an offline company into the online world. There are still many businesses who dont even have an email ID, or even if they have, there is no monitoring. For the new generation, it is all about ‘impersonal communication’ like email, chat or social media. We dont prefer to call or visit a company for getting any work done. We send an email and wait for a reply 🙂 This, IMHO again, is a changing behavior of the youth and nearly every firm will have to adapt to this. They will find it more efficient to serve a customer via email, chat or social media as compared to on phone or in person.

Thus, Digital has a great future for those who are doing something meaningful & adapting to it as it changes.

  7. I dont think there can be an answer to this question. Internet was established for military purposes and nobody for sure knew that there would come a time when people would start living off it. When computers came to India, companies like Infosys etc. mushroomed. Dont think even they knew that the Internet would create humongous companies much greater than them in a matter of 5-7 years.

So i guess, we just wait and watch what happens. And keep evolving. Technology is going to bring us new things and people are going to adopt it. Internet or more specifically Telecom will remain an integral part because it connects two entities. Companies like Facebook might die, but Google? Nope, because they always think a step ahead into new technology. So, i think internet’s impact will not cease in the next 100 years. only the players will change.

  8. Dear Harshit,

I am not sure if the question is “How long will internet feed your stomach?” Or “How long will these individual products – FB, Twitter, Snapchat, Etc will feed your stomach?”

    1. We are in the phase where we have started getting “Connected”. – People, Commerce, Things, Everything.. So, Internet as a Medium will be there till we have a better medium to “Connect”

    2. Individual products – Be it Myspace, Orkut, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter – Any one of them have a simple product cycle. Its like if you have to stay alive – INNOVATE.  (I know my comment is becoming little longer.. but .. Guess its okay.)

Internet Product Adoption: So, suppose you launch a kool app, website, anything which “connects” people in a new and innovative manner – solving communication need, building a new social digital identity of the user – It will be kool for Early Adopters.. and they will join in.. Spreading the Word of Mouth that something kool is launched..(they spread because that makes them kool in their social circle). With more and more joining in it will soon become stale..boring.. and might die – if they don’t innovate.

(Okay, I will know its getting long .. )

To add my viewpoint on your other questions –

“With website making such a ease these days & upcoming entrepreneurs… Where is the future ?”  – The point is not website, the point is what communication platform is built and on what medium

Also, I do not agree with this opinion of yours – “Also in digital world the game is won by one who first gets the idea first and execute it first !”   – Just to add an example – There were many Video sharing/uploading platforms before Youtube – Do you know who were they ? May be no. Again its not just about product. Its about “What is built”, “How is it marketed/projected“, “How it evolves“, and “How it sustains“.

I might/might not be fully detailed in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.
