Registration of users is not primarily to acquire customers but more so to interact and engage existing customers.The idea is to get the details of the existing customer though registration and inform them about new products which they can buy from you. New discounts which are available,informing about the products they can buy based on their previous buying data through news letters and also to make he checkout process faster.
So yes registration is very important as returning customers are very important and much easy to acquire than a new customer.
