Indian Arts & Crafts – Startup

Hi Everyone,
I am an Information Technology professional with 20+ years of work experience in different industries i.e. Hospitality, Manufacturing and Information Technology. I want to pursue my passion and start e-commerce in the field of India handicrafts.

Currently I am planning to start an ecommerce business in Handicrafts where I plan to sell crafts items in Stone, Glass, Metal, Leather, Wood, Paper Craft and other crafts of India.

Plan :-
1. I will be selling these products on the portal to end customers (B2C).
2. End customers will visit our website and buy our products.
3. All the selling will be done online and across India.
4. Portal will be promoted by various marketing and advertisement planning.
5. Since I am not a Business Development professional I am looking for Business Development professional who has experience of B2C market and can help/guide me with Business Development.

I am based out of Delhi/NCR. I am looking forward for a person who can help/guide me with the Sales & Marketing planning and strategies.

I am also open to idea of anyone becoming a co-founder and help/guide me with Business Development.
Looking forward to your help and support.

Regards

Ravinder

  1. Guess this should be in the Jobs category You are looking for BDM someone already doing this is looking for TECH co founder maybe check with them or associate (if not done yet) ?

    Looking for Technology Co-Founder

Nevertheless since you are from the IT industry and hold good number of years as experience getting the online part would not be a thing to be struggled with, though If I may ask is the site as listed above by you your own ? Or that is yet to be Finalized and this is only for the Basic information regarding what you intend doing ? The site looks to be from a Mumbai based company and you stated you are Delhi based.

There needs to be a Model and some source of Investments for the purchase and disposal (sales) to start with too.

Two ways of Doing this Either Become a Vendor / Supplier for existing portals selling such produce as a super stockist resourcing from the various mediums likewise OR setup your Own.

The Art AffairCustomised Artefacts, Home Accessories, Rajkot Art, Art Gallery Rajkot, Wallpapers, Wall Graphics, Corporate Gifts Rajkot, Paintings, Gift Articles, Home Decoration, Decor, Designer Products, Designer wallpapers, customised wallpapers, home furnishings, furniture, handicrafts, wall stickers, wall clocks

MemoriesA Shop for Gifts, Toys, Accessories, Greeting Cards, Handicraft, Happily Unmarried Products, Silver Jewellery, Silver Articles. Situated in the heart of Mangalore.

Check out a whole list here!!!

    1. I will be selling these products on the portal to end customers (B2C).

Which Portal do you intend to sell them from ? There are already a few Marketplaces /  portals where you can do this or make your own website with a payment gateway added, need to take care of the Packaging, logistics, Delivery and shipping etc as well too.

Why Online Marketplaces may fail in India

    2. End customers will visit our website and buy our products.

End customers are Individuals or CORPORATES and Tourists, Groups ? How would they come to know about it ? Need to associate with Gift Shops, Souvenir shops, Trade fairs, Tours and Travel agents, Guides and Greeters (You And India

You and India- Introducing greeters in Indian Travel Industry

, Padhaaro, Ish Jindal) from various cities etc to get the reach and it could be seasonal too.

    3. All the selling will be done online and across India.

When the products are out of reach and Decisions are to be made instinctively via pictures alone, tough call on upselling lost there need to have  a call center number provided for details of any product if required like size, weight, material, numbers colors, patterns etc than what would be an Instant buy off the shelf in a brick and mortar shop to associate and maybe that ways buy more number of products too, a chain of stores could  be organized, either by participation or by franchise route or on sharing basis for better look and touch and feel.

    4. Portal will be promoted by various marketing and advertisement planning.

Looks Good, needs to be well timed as well for many of the Gifting and Festivals which happen. You have the ITES background from iYogi which could be helpful for the calling and call center setup if required which would work in your favor to boost sales too and promote the site and goods as well B2B cannot be ignored for VOLUME sales (Just Saying)

    5. Since I am not a Business Development professional I am looking for Business Development professional who has experience of B2C market and can help/guide me with Business Development.

Only in B2C market would not be helpful domain specialization of the handicrafts and the related would be required with it too. This also becomes a personal Synergy thing when deciding as well (When Found) If paid then you can compromise on performance based remuneration with basic to start with and incentivize as required too. Should  be a TEAM ideally though.

You can check if you are able to connect with Gaurav Borana who also has some similar experience, With this reference and get him to work with you in this regards, a few more with me too as well can be found on trhs as well listing a few below for you to check out and connect / associate. 2. Dear Ravinder,

I was one of the Yatri in the Jagriti Yatra 2014 as discussed by Darshan in the previous comment. With other co-yatris, we have decided to start a handicrafts livelihood organisation for providing better opportunities to handicrafts artists living in villages. We have in fact started a training program of 5 artists and they would come up with first batch of handicrafts by 10th Feb. We would use them as testing products in our market.

We would love to hear from you and see the possibility of collaboration as we too are finding our way to sell.

    Our options:

    1. Retail chains

    2. Online store

    3. online retail stores

    4. Hotels

    5. Export

Hence, it would be nice to discuss it. As we may have something to collaborate.

    Cheers

  3. Hello Ravinder,

This is in reference to your above post, I would like to connect with you as we both share the same passion I.e. handicrafts. I have done a lot of R&D on this and know from where what type of handicraft can be procured. During the process I came across several vendors and still have catalogues and details of many of them. As part of trial marketing I combined all those details and published them in a blog and I actually started receiving enquiries. But due to some issues I was not able to take it further.

It will be very exciting to work with someone likeminded and who shares the same passion and goal. If you see something feasible then plz get back to me @08126045425. Although, I have moved to Moradabad now, but I visit delhi quite often. We can meet sometime.

    Regards,

    Kunal Kalra

  4. Hi Ravinder,

As Darshan mentioned, distribution is certainly going to be a challenge here and I think you just need to figure out what’s going to work for you. A friend of mine runs this, https://chanderisarees.in and facebook is something that has really worked for him.

To speak about the tourists, we have never tried to cross-sell any souvenirs or handicrafts to our customers at Padhaaro ever since they wanted to get a feel of it before they actually purchase them and shipping is not an issue since these offline guys also do it now. Moreover, cracking the offline travel agent route is a different game in itself.

    Hope that helps a bit.

    Best,
    Ish
