Language, how much does it actually matter?

I am not the kind of guy who’s abusive in his posts on any social media forum and generally steer clear of any type of such talks. Recently, I had posted a status update that had the word “Fuck” in it referring to the extreme hot climate in Mumbai currently.

Now, for us normal beings it’s just a way of expressing the insanity of the weather and in no ways would mean as a disgraceful use of language. However, an elderly person after reading the post came up to me and said, “Don’t use such words on your posts, especially on FB and other social media channels where the whole world can see”. This intrigued me, do we still live in a world where a general usage of the so called abusive word is still damned? I mean we pretty much use abusive language in our everyday lives so much that it has become a way of living for a lot of people to express their displeasure on different levels.

I tend to agree that the usage of the word and the context in which it has been used is also extremely important. But at the same time, if one uses it on a level which is expressing displeasure towards non-animate things does still bother people?

For the time being, I don’t have an answer for that but maybe later I will.

But the question still hangs in mind, how much does the use of language actually matter? Does one look bad even while referring to inanimate objects and situations which are generic to all with such words?
