It was great opportunity to be a part of such big forum which is helping aspiring entrepreneurs.

Currently I am working one an idea, in which I am trying to create a platform which will help people(patients, doctors) in managing their medical prescriptions, records, reports and seamless access to this data anywhere.

I am the first generation from my family who is trying his hand in entrepreneurship. I don’t know how and where to start. I would like if you provide your help and inputs on below points-

    • Inputs regarding the idea

    • How to start

    • Currently I am the only person in my family who is earning, can I start full time/part time?

    • As I am the only person in my family who is earning, I want funding to be raised, what will be better can I start working on my idea, create some base and then go for fund raising or I can first start looking for funding and then start working on idea

  1. Dear All,

I am open to discuss my idea in detail, please feel free to contact me.

    Thanks,
    Pankaj B

  2. Hi Pankaj,

The idea is great, but a few points which you will have to work on :

    1. creating a database of each and every doctor, pathologist, pharmacist and other specialty doctors.

    2. you will have to connect everyone and will have to make them move to this software or technology.

    3. You need to get approvals from the authority.

Just a few pointers to be checked. Also think about starting up in a small locality run a prototype post which if it works then go on to scale it.

  3. Hi Karna,

Thanks for your inputs. I am planning to target it for patients first…if response is good then it’ll be easy to approach doctors, pharmacist, hospitals.

Regard approvals, yes we have to follow the standards provided by respective authorities and it is the big challenge.

    Thanks,
    Pankaj

  4. Search for OpenERP Medical

Its all there with lots more (OpenERP Module name : GNU Health by Thymbra)

  5. i didn’t catch your 8th point .. over social network ? and i think there will be few products which must be providing similar facility

  6. Hi Govind,

The links are really helpful. Actually I am not trying to build hospital management or healthcare application.

What I am trying to build is an application which will help patients to manage their medical records paperless.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Pankaj Bakal

  7. Hi Nitish,

With social network user can share medical records with their near and dear ones securely.

    Thanks and Regards,

    Pankaj Bakal

  8. Dear All,

I am really looking forward to your inputs on this.

    Thanks & Regards,
    Pankaj B.

  9. But I mean what is use of it ?

  10. See last year my dad had a heart attack, he was there in my native and I was in Mumbai…so we were running from hospital to hospital to get different tests done before he went through his bypass surgery…so I need to travel to my native every 2-3 days to get the reports and take second opinion in Mumbai…if the system was present at that time it had been very easy for me to get the things done faster….also as I was staying just one night journey away from my native, it was still easy thing…think if I was away in some other country…I think this will answer your question

  11. See i Got your point of putting this in cloud and all but Y to make a social network ..?? THe USP is to manage medical records at one place , y to make it social network out of it ??

  12. It is just a value added feature to get updates about health of your close one live on your wall

  13. My pointers Pankaj , answer the following questions to self.

    1. What region are you targeting ? Indians are not so savvy to share medical records (esp . where they have to do data entry , even pull soft copy from other sources) . Developed countries seems to have cultivated hygiene to keep data online.

    2. You have to provide tangible returns to the customers , to build your data chain . How will a patient/pathologist/practitioners be benefited?  . your points 5/4/6/7 and 8 dint convince me.

    3. It would be a zillion$ idea if you have all the entities on board , feeding data to your cloud. Build if my nukada wala practitioner and the medic are not online I dont feel the wow factor.

Lastly, remember if your convinced and passionate , no matter what people (with angel halo) say , JDI (just do it)

    -Raj

  14. Develop a prototype by working after your office hours (some friends can chip in with coding & design too). Make at least 50 of your friends & family to use the prototype at one or two hospitals  you know (and convince).

    Funding will come after that.

  15. How you are going to make PROFIT out of it? It’s a business and you must have revenue and profit. (Even if it is charity business)

There are atleast more than 100 similar patients health records with more value added services in the world and almost all are FREE and almost all are in loss and more than 95% are closed. Check on net.

Even google closed its free PHR. Micosoft still running free. Even it is free, people do not use it. why?

In abroad, similar facilities are provided by govt. These are heavily funded by Govt. Can you compete with it. All Hospital Information Software companies provide this (what you proposed) as inbuilt.

To develope HIS requires lacks of dollers and the market is already saturated. Moment you introduce a new thing it is going to be provided immedietly by established players.

What you propose is already in market. See Practise fusion, OpenEMR, Patients OS etc. So, only with above proposal, in my opinion it is not advisable. Any other valua added services which none of these providers  offer shall be looked into.

Do you have any self convincing idea where you will also become a member to such facitity at a price. Either that is not provided or you shall provide the existing facility at more competitive rate / exellance. I see that many similar projects are made by hobbiest, enthusiestic groups. None of them proceeds to seed or angel funding.

Find out atleast 2 profit making companies in same or similar type of business. Find out 2 persons who have opened and closed / or still running the show. Then proceed.

In my opinion when more than 100 shops are already opening and closing the same business every year  and all are in loss despite of providing it free, then WHY shall I open onother shop ?

  16. You should not put medical records or updates on a public forum such as a social network. There are privacy issues with doing that.

  17. Nilesh…Yes you are right we should not put medical records or updates  on any public forum…but I am planning to provide it as a add on service and user will be able to customize what data he wants to show and what to hide

  18. Raj Thanks for the pointers….to answer to your questions…

    1. Currently I am planning for India only yes the people are not that savvy to share medical records but yes initially they bothered about using banking and eCommerce  websites too….I am planning to role it in phase wise manner starting from Tier 1 cities and going below

    2. Believe me when my father had an heart attack I was carrying around 3-4 kgs of Medical records of around 200 pages and managing that one was not a easy job….so if I will be able to provide an easy option to the patients who will be my primary targets they will start to use my application and when root users (patients) will come others (pathologists and practioners will also start using application)….points 4/5/6/7 and 8 are the benefits that user is going to get after using this application

    3. Yes that is very true…but still user can manage his own medical records for his reference only and also in future I am planning to put features such as creating some dashboards on all the medical records provided by user so that he will be able to monitor his own progress

    Thanks and Regards,

    Pankaj Bakal

  19. Yes that’s what I am planning to do but as a IT professional it is very difficult to devote much needed time to your idea.

  20. Thanks Raju for your inputs…I am planning to keep a business model for giving the service free for some time period or a particular data limit which user can sync after that he had to pay

Yes there are more than 100 patient records management system and they are failed…but they are failed because their main target audience is always Prationers and Hospitals and not the end users (patients) who need simple way to manage their data without technical vocabulary and glitches

Why the other companies had failed because they have build systems so complex that it was very difficult for a common person to use them and also all these systems are currently build around desktop only I am planning to role out for Mobile and Tablets too

    Thanks and Regards,

    Pankaj Bakal

  21. Hi…mailed you the details…please check…Thanks

  22. Hi, here are a few points that I feel you’ll need to take care off before you start –

    1. ePresc.  – How do we authenticate that the doctor has written the prescription?  Prescription remains the essential part of care provision; if the prescription cannot be authenticated or fudged then it will have its own legal as well as moral implications.
    2. Syncing e-bills alltogether is a good thing – this way at the end of the year, everyone can claim their medical allowances and save some tax.
    3. What about reports of MRI/CTs/Sonographies, where the films are large enough to sync with cloud, plus a special Dicom viewer is required to view the images, and a PACS of course to ensure the quality of the scans.
    4. Social Network? – With privacy issues always floating around social networks, sharing medical reports socially is not a great idea as per me. If one wants to share it with anyone, a mail always caters the purpose.

My suggestion: One can individually create a medical cloud of themselves and store all medical information of themselves there, and share that with their family if reqd, the medical fraternities. Healthcare providers are working hard on providing soft copies of medical reports.  I recently made a comprehensive excel sheet to store all the information of my reports, as every time flipping back or finding the medical test record was difficult and I am on continuous diagnosis. A simple excel with date of investigation, investigation name, my results, standard results, diagnostic service, etc. caters to the needs.

For instance, NM Medical Mumbai is one such diagnostic center which gives you your diagnostic reports online. However the MR/CT scans you need to collect personally. In case you want to send the images abroad, the CD of scans is sent along with Dicom viewer and where tele-radiology is concerned, the images are transferred via PACS and reported accordingly.

Most of the diagnostic centres are providing this facility, however the hospitals are still working very hard to make available online, the huge amounts of patient’s medical record data. As per healthcare rules & regulations, for one patient, a hospital has to keep the med. Records for 3 years and for medico-legal cases for 10 years or more.

Also, the hospitals have a HIS (Hospital Information System) wherein they have the data of medical history, diagnosis, reports, medications, etc available online. This is accessed by using a unique Hospital ID. However the patient can’t access it personally, the data remains with hospital. If you can create integration of HIS with Individual’s cloud or any other thing, where patient can access the hospital records personally without altering it, anywhere in the world, then I guess the real problem gets a solution.

Something about me – I have personally worked on NM Medical’s online reporting system and have gone through the pros & cons of it, from the user as well as the provider perspective for more than a year. Let me know if you have any queries for me. Happy to Help.

  23. Hi!

Someone got in  touch with me about this, and coz I was not here for past 10 days. It just went out of my mind who the person was.

Apologies, but can you please identify yourself or mail me at bhawanasahu@outlook.com

  24. Hi Pankaj,

I have been toying with this idea for over a year, but never got started. I know of a hospital chain who will be willing to experiment and provide the right platform to get something like this going. They already use something similar for their In-patient records, however, the OPD is still open. If you are developing the platform, then we should connect.
