Ask For Help

Need Suggestions and Feedback

I have been hanging around at the Rodinhood forum for quite some time now but never made an effort to sit down and write something.

To cut a long story short, some time back i faced a problem and got an idea for a startup. After spending a couple of weeks thinking if the idea would work or not i finally dedcided that there was no better way than starting up and finding out if the ideas was worth it. Though still uncertain about my idea, i have decided to start up.

I am looking to collect some feedback from fellow Rodinhoders so that i can refine my idea and perhaps get more clarity of thought.

The Idea

I will be building an Event Discovery Platform or in simpler words a website that helps people find about events that are happening in their cities, filtered according to their interests.

After toiling on the idea for about a week, i thought of modifying the idea and building a platform that lets people know what all activities they can do in their city. Almost all of you would have faced a situation when you or some of your friend would have asked someone “Kya kare yar?” “Kahan jayein yar”(“What should we do?, “Where should we go). I think this a very old problem and somebody needs to build something to answer that question. And when i talk of activities i am not talking about the Normal Activities like eating out, visiting malls and stuff. By activities i mean a little unusual activities lie Laser Tag, Paragliding and stuff.

Now, I am in a state of confusion if i should implement the first idea or the second or make something that solves both the problems as it is possible to implement both of them on a single platform but i fear that it would confuse the user..

I see a lot of scope in the first idea as there are very few competitors in the market and most of them are more focused on solving the problems of a couple of thousand event organizers rather than solving the problem of a million users. They focus on selling tickets. Though selling tickets would be a part of my business model but it would be for the convenience of the people. Our primary target will be to make event discovery easier for the end user. Also, none of the current players have a product that i would like to use.

Regarding the second idea, i think i can target a larger market but there are a few startups that have recently started and are trying to something similar(To name a few – https://www.iexperience.in/, https://www.tushky.com/) and they have a satisfactory product which i would use, but they are not exactly what i would like it to be. I do not want to end up creating a me too product.

I would like to have your suggestions and feedback about the idea,

PS: A little bit about me: I am a 19 year old student living in Delhi, enthusiastic about start ups. i have been a quintessential mediocre for the last 19 years and have decided not be a mediocre for the rest of my life.

  1. hi ankit,

    welcome to trhs!

for a 19 year old you seem to have a great amount of maturity to talk about being the quintessential mediocre! and from your post, you don’t sound mediocre at all 🙂

since you are delhi-based, i suggest you meet up with ashwani gaur – the founder of Playcez (an event discovery platform as well)

    https://www.therodinhoods.com/profile/AshwaniGaur

you can read about his presentation about Playcez at one of the monthly meetups of rodinhooders of delhi. https://www.therodinhoods.com/forum/topics/you-should-be-there-to-experience-it-all-delhi-meet-up-1

feel free to write to me at asha@rodinhood.com if you’d like me to connect you with some active rodinhooders based in delhi.

    all the best!

    I hope this helps you.

    🙂

    Cheers,
    Tejas

  3. I will send him a message right away. Thanks :).

  4. It was really helpful, sort of inspirational i must say. The fact that he waited for 3 years to get noticed is commendable. Thanks 🙂

  5. Check allevents.in – startup in this space. All the best !

  6. thanks for this manish.

ankit – the easiest way to reach out to amit would be to comment on his post – https://www.therodinhoods.com/forum/topics/two-years-journey-of-all-events-in-city-allevents-in

  7. I might sound naive but what am i supposed to do with this. Would these guys help in giving rise to a competitor?

  8. Hi Ankit,

The first Idea you talked about, there are existing players and each one of them is expanding exponentially, you must be keeping track of Explara and Meraevents. Now, entrepreneurs are venuring into specific domains, like for example oyeparty.com lets you find the party place/event in your city. Along the same line, may be you can segment and target a whole new market of adventurous people, or as you say the existing players are not working for millions and you can bring in a better platform from a customers perspective. But, if I had been you I would be targeting a specific segment of events!.:)

    Hope this helps.

  9. ankit,

it will give you a better understanding about your idea. if you didn’t know about these startups or the fact that they are founded by rodinhooders, means perhaps you need to do more market research! and perhaps you’re not solving a gap to begin with!

newsflash… rodinhooders always help rodinhooders!!! so if there are synergies, you never know what could come out of a discussion with any of them! have an open mind. you are the younger and inexperienced one here. this is an opportunity to learn from others 🙂

    all the best!

  10. Thanks 🙂

I did know about these startups but i did not know that they were founded by Rodinhooders.

I agree with your point and i will surely get in touch with them. Thanks again for your patience.

  11. Explara and Meraevents are surely market leaders in this segment. However they are more inclined towards helping event managers. I was a bit confused about the segments that i should target, earlier i was looking at 3 to 4 segments but overtime i have a feeling that it would be better to start of with a single segment and see how things turn out.

    Thanks for your suggestions 🙂
