Need to know about Android Apps

Hello Rodinhooders,

I am thinking of developing a simple Android app. I am extremely new in this field and I would like to know about a few things.

1. Which programming/coding language is used to develop and Android app?

2. Once the code has been developed, where is it to be saved? I mean do I have to buy a server for the code? What will be the approx. server charges?

3. What are the security features which need to be added to the app?

4. The app I want to develop is a very simple price comparison app. No login/registration is required from the user. What would be the approx total cost of developing a basic price comparison app?

4. Is hiring a freelancer a good idea to get the app developed?

The questions might be very basic but I am extremely new to this field.

I would be very glad if any Android expert or even a person having knowledge of Android can help me out.

  1. Hi Shravan…

Please find answer to your questions

    1. Which programming/coding language is used to develop and Android app?

To develop any Android apps we use Java Language

    2. Once the code has been developed, where is it to be saved? I mean do I have to buy a server for the code? What will be the approx. server charges?

If you developing your self it will be in your projects folder or you outsourced to any one, you can asking them to zip the code and send it back to you.. you no need to buy any server.. you keep it in your hard drive , pen drive.. or store in dropbox..etc..

    3. What are the security features which need to be added to the app?

    NA..

    4. The app I want to develop is a very simple price comparison app. No login/registration is required from the user. What would be the approx total cost of developing a basic price comparison app?

Freelancer can do for very low cost.. but don’t know you get quality as you expecting.. if you go mobile developer companies.. might be cost.. always remember never freelance the project someone who working in job .. bcz they more concerned about their job rather than your project.. I’ve good experience..

    4. Is hiring a freelancer a good idea to get the app developed?

40-50% okay.. since you can get it in low cost.. but no guarantee…

  3. Hi Shravan,

    1. Which programming/coding language is used to develop and Android app?

Core android programming is done through Android APIs based on Java programming language. One good developer reference is @ https://developer.android.com/develop/index.html

    2. Once the code has been developed, where is it to be saved? I mean do I have to buy a server for the code? What will be the approx. server charges?

This question has been worded vaguely. I’m assuming you want to know where to host your application.

Let me give you a brief of the app development workflow:

    • Use a popular IDE like Eclipse to code the classes and integrate all your resources. You can also test your apps using an Android virtual device (emulator). There are 3rd party emulators like Genymotion which are a very effective way of quickly and efficiently testing your apps. You may also directly test them on your Android Device.
    • Once you have tested your app, you need to export it as a signed apt file for distribution to the end user.
    • If you wish to Distribute your apps via Google Play App store, you will have to create an account there and upload to Google Play app store using their developer console.
    • You can also distribute your apps directly to known users by sending them the apk file or hosting a download link on some server and asking them install it directly on their device by having them enable the ‘install from non Google play market sources’ setting on their Android devices.

    3. What are the security features which need to be added to the app?

Security features will depend on the utility and purpose of the actual app itself. A price comparison info app with no user data authentication might not require any security features.

    4. You could hire a freelancer to have your app developed as per your budget, but it would help if you understand the technical aspects of the app and the underlying technologies to manage the task effectively.

  4. Thanks a lot Ian for answering all my queries. Any idea about how much would a freelancer charge for starting a price comparison app for books?

  5. Thanks Soumen. Will definitely learn Android app development from Udacity. Thanks for sharing the link.

  6. Thanks Suresh for answering all my queries. Will definitely get in touch with you if I have any queries. Thanks for the wishes.

  7. Shravan, glad to know I could address your queries.

Freelancers usually have an hourly rate of $10+ and may bill you on how many hours they will have to spend on the project and the complexity of the tasks and other overheads involved. To get a good time estimate for your project the specific requirements will have to be known. You will have to provide more detailed list of requirements, features of the app to get a fair ball park estimation.
