Ask For Help

Sanitary Napkin making machine

One of my friend is looking to set up small scale manufacturing facility for maternity and period sanitary napkins. He is targeting the whole sale, hospital and  dispensary market.

We searched for manufacturing machines in the market, we found the machines available are too costly which are not feasible for small scale industry and  some low end machines involves too much of manual intervention in each process.

We are looking for ideal machines for manufacturing sanitary napkin which will help us to run small scale industry, if any of rodinhooders have any idea on this industry and any lead of manufacturing machine, please help us with the information.

Thanks

John Peter

  1. quick q – has your friend tried connecting with Arunachalam Muruganantham…?

  2. Hi,

You must check this inspiration TED talk by Arunachalam Muruganantham who created a system of simple machines to make modern sanitary napkins — giving millions of women in his home country and around the world access to hygiene.

He faced similar issues of heavy capital investment in machinery. Even after much struggle when he didn’t found one he made one on his own.

Sincerely hope this helps you in particular and inspire many to overcome day to day issues simply by learning the subject in depth & innovating things around us to overcome the same.

    A MUST WATCH ……

  3. Hey,

    Check this link – https://www.indiamedexpo.in/Schedule.aspx

The India Med Expo in association with (Centre of Excellence for Medical Textiles )The South India Textile Research Association (SITRA)  is organizing seminar in  Business Opportunities in Medical Textiles at HITEX Exhibition Centre, Hyderabad from December 6-8 2013.

    Hope it helps

  4. To my understanding this is a part of technical textiles.

As the woven material needs free of any contamination you will be required to make it in a clean environment using extrusion process. This is a heavy CAPEX oriented business and also requires good Raw Material management skills as the inwards major material is a plastic derivative from which you would extrude woven material to making the pads which are finally stitched & packed  & supplied.

  5. Asha, We looked at Muruganatham machine details, his machine is ideal for community and self help groups, not for small scale industries. His machine involve manual intervention for every process of making the napkin. For small scale industry human resource cost is high if Muruganatham machine is used.

  6. Rajeev, Thanks for your reply. His machine is ideal for small self help group, we cannot build a profitable business using his machine.

  7. Hi Sanket, Thanks for the information.

  8. Peter, I understand what you mean. This machine might not be of much help to you but what is important here is that this gentleman didn’t stop and made a machine which suits his requirements of capital & supply. I am assuming that you must have done a lots of research  by now and if for sure their is not machine like this and you feel the demand for the same may be you go out and make one that suits you.

Also, have you heard of ROTIMATIC by any chance ? There was none like this in the past but now we have one. You know your business & thus you are the best judge. All we can say is ALL THE BEST.

  9. Rajeev, thanks for wishes….His contribution is boon for self help groups and for an entrepreneur from rural area

  10. Hi John,

As far as I know there is no machine available in India between a small scale (self help group level) and large scale level.

How many Sanitary Napkin you are looking forward to produce per day? It is very important to know this answer because type of machine depends upon that.

Which market you like to target for selling these sanitary napkin? Have you been able to calculated the profit margin on this business because it’s a fmcg business where volume is very important?

I would also like to know what has triggered your friend to get into this business.

Probably I can help you to get answers to lot of your queries.

About Me: I have done extensive research on this business. As an entrepreneur I was fortunate to get an opportunity to setup small production units in the rural area of Uttar Pradesh in collaboration with a Dutch company, Ikea foundation, Unicef and UNDP.

I have met with many sanitary napkin small machine vendors in India.

  11. Hi Rudra, Thanks for your reply. I was exactly looking for someone of your kind with the knowledge.  My email id is johnpeterm@gmail.com, please share us your contact details where I can have detailed discussion on the business idea.

  12. Hi Rajeev & Asha,

Surely the talk of Mr. Arunachalam Muruganantham is very inspirational, however I am daring to say that the reality is quite different.

Whenever you search for any thing around Sanitary Napkin business you will find every thing revolves around Arunachalam Muruganantham. He has done a great work by inventing that small machine but the commercial viability of business model around that machine is almost impractical.

I have met with many entrepreneurs and NGOs in Chennai, Madurai and Maharastra and found that people are struggling with his machine and have developed a very bad impression of him. What I got to know from these people that he used to sell his machines to SHG (self help groups) and to rural entrepreneurs with the help of funding from government. He gets his money but the entrepreneur who has been injected with the dream of flourishing sanitary napkin business gets stuck with the inefficient machine.

Unfortunately I also have one machine from him which is lying in my garage at my village.

My intention to write about this is just to make aware all the rodinhooders that how different a secondary research could be from a highly acclaimed primary research.

I was surprised to read about him few months back in an “Entrepreneur” magazine that claimed him as great social entrepreneur, that made me to rethink about the credibility of all other entrepreneurial stories which I have been reading to get inspired myself as an entrepreneur.

Our media publishes many stories of success without even knowing the true reality.

I am not against Mr. Arunachalam Muruganantham, he is definitely a great inventor.

  13. I have just dropped you an email. My emailed is rudra.e@gmail.com

  17. Hi Rudra, Thank you very much for sharing your knowledge, it was helpful.

  18. Asha, rodinhoods rocks and rodinhooder supper rock, ask for anything in rodinhood forum and you will never be disappointed…

  19. hey john!

    any updates on this project???!!!

    would love to know!

  20. Hi Asha,

The machinery available  for small scale industry is semi automated, it involves 80% of manual interaction on every stage of manufacturing. It is not scalable to the level of running small scale industry. The cost involved for human resource is high while the production is low.

The other machine available is too large scale, which cost more Rs.1+ crore and it manufactures almost 400 pieces per  minute. This scale is too huge and this could be done only by large industry.

I am still in the look out of ideal machine which will  be suitable for running small scale industry.

  22. Hi John,

Try http://www.satyamnonwovens.com and talk to Mr Rajiv Solanki, who is a director in M/s Satyam Non-wovens Pvt Ltd. Rajiv is a very good friend. He is an established entrepreneur and has manufactured his own non-woven fabric manufacturing machines and moved on to importing assembly lines from China. He is a very respected figure in the industry and I am sure any discussion with him would be enlightening for you.

From our early discussions I remember him mentioning that he has done a lot of research on sanitary napkins. Rajiv is based out of Jaipur and his units are also there.

If you face any difficulty in getting in touch with Rajiv do mail me, manishsisodia@yahoo.com or call +919820020948.
