Starting a price comparison site for books

I am planning to start a online price comparison site which will allow users to search for books of their choice and display the price of that book apart from other details like delivery details, COD option available or not etc at various online bookstores.

Apart from that, It will also have a blog where we will review latest books and always conduct contests and giveaways on a regular basis.

I have a few queries. It would be extremely helpful if you can help me to sort them out.

1. There are a couple of other large players in this space. Is there any scope for a newcomer in this niche?

2. Since I am not much into coding/designing I will have to outsource site designing/development. What will be the approximate charge of creating such a site?

3. What are the revenues I can expect from such a site if I have a modest traffic and monetize the site with affiliate links to product pages at online stores? I am thinking of taking up this work as a side project which will enable me to make some modest amount every month.(Even 3-5k every month to start with will be good enough)

It would be extremely great to hear from you guys.  Please do share your opinion and feedback.

  1. Hi Shravan, I think you would have done adequate market research around this, there are already many price comparison search engines, eg:Junglee, and are quite popular in the market, what would be your USP? You should find sites  like this, find something that you can workupon, i m sure you will find some opportunity.

Developing a price comparison engine involves many modules, you would to work through API [which i don’t think many  sites would have], or can set CRON jobs to crawl the data at regular periods, since lot of technology is involved i would suggest you to find technical cofounder if possible. A decent firm will take anything between 50k to 250k to design the first version of the service [this will include a lot a things].

I don’t think you can get the money so early, coz you have to spend on adwords, social media etc. too, thn only the site would be popular enough to earn you any money.

    Thanks 🙂

  6. Doesnt makes sense.

Books are commodity. Hardly any price fluctuations if you look for Autobiography of a Yogi on Junglee.com

I am sure these solutions exist, but take “PRICE COMPARISON” to a new field, since that really is your USP?

  7. Yes sir. Will definitely keep your suggestion in mind and explore those possibilities too.

  9. Hey Shravan, I personally use thisyathat.com for price comparison of books. Also reviews in the ecommerce websites and goodreads.com are enough to judge the book. So I agree with Alok regarding price comparison for other ideas.

    Happy to help always 🙂
