Ask For Help

The Web Development side of an ecommerce startup.

Hi Guys ,

I’ve been a lurker on the site for quite a while. Am coming out of the shadows when my own need arose. Please help me out !!

So I am thinking about starting an ecommerce business in the construction area. I am in the business already so I know how it works and how to make it work online. However I have no idea whatsoever about the web end of the business.

How much time will it take. What is a basic frame of reference for costs ? What questions should I ask ? What should I plan for the future in terms of scaling up ?

Basically Id like ask all the people here how do I go about planning the Web design and development of a website including the backends ? Also what mistakes have you made that I can learn from and avoid ???

Thank you all so much in advance 🙂

  1. Hi there,

You have advantage that you are already into business. Now, if you want to get yourself digitalized, the money involved wouldn’t be much but if it is ecommerce website, yes, it will cost you time and money. Ask those web developers to do SEO as well after website creation. The total charge can depend on several factors and packages a company has but it should be between 1-3 lakhs I believe.

You need to check at least 10-20 various ecommerce website selling their own products. You can visit brands like Apple, Samsung, Google if you must to see how they are selling physical products/online service, create the requirement list for your own website and ask the quotation from various web development companies.

All those who will ask for less time to do SEO or promise to get your website on top of Google, skip them immediately 🙂 There is never such gaurantee (unless that company secretly owns Google…lol)

This shouldn’t be much difficult task actually.

  2. Hi Vinay,

I own a digital marketing agency called 72interactive in Delhi, we are specialist in custom ecommerce solution, right from a basic vanilla store to a complex ecommerce solution.

As per my 14yrs of experience in Industry and diversified experience in retail, travel, media, automobile, export & import (i.e. working with all sorts of customers), you should ask yourself following questions.

    1. B2C or B2B store.
    2. No of SKU & Min Order Qty
    3. Ease of transporting these SKU & Transpiration Cost.
    4. Payment Mode
    5. Your USP over retailers (Ease of shopping, cost factor, quality, etc)
    6. In some products you need to have a dealership, so do you have them. Since many companies had been objecting it. Take a look at this aritcle in ET published sometime back. Here is the link to article – https://articles.economictimes.indiatimes.com/2015-01-23/news/583825…

You can look at some of these online stores:

I hope this helped. You can call me at 09811122212 to take this discuss further to understand cost involved etc or visit my website https://www.72interactive.in

  3. Hi Vinay,

Check this https://www.shopify.in/ which can help you create your ecommerce website .So MVP will be up and running at minimalistic cost. Once you see that you are getting more business/demand and Shopify is not able to meet your needs to scale, build a custom solution by taking help of digital agency.

And if you are looking to build it from scratch then start with writing what all features do you need in your website. Target only those which are must for first launch. DO NOT try to create entire flipkart like website with all features upfront. Technology (I mean backend and front end) does matter, but as you don’t know what is Cleint Side/Server side stuff, take help of your technical cousin when you are taking to digital agencies. And if you don’t have  any techi cousin in your family, drop me a message and I can help you out.

    Cheers,

    Vikram

  5. First of all, you have to decide what all you want in your website i.e. just information purpose i.e. listing of products and receiving payment via COD or a website where user can buy your products/service by paying online using payment gateway.

It also depends on how much is your budget? If you don’t have budget issue, you can go with those online website builders where they charge monthly/yearly fees. Initially it may look affordable but once your business grows overall it will become costly.

So, I will recommend building a custom ecommorce website based on your current need with your current budget and then once your business or revenue grows, you can invest that part in making it better.

Note: We can build your ecommerce website (asp.net c#) based on budget and requirement. If you want to discuss, please email at contact@wedost.com and Yes, we do provide 99% after sale satisfaction guarantee.

  6. Please do check this website as well:

    https://www.buildemart.com/

    https://www.materialtree.com/building-materials

    https://www.100bricks.com/

    https://www.econstructionmart.com/

You can check features they offer and think about USP, you will find many online platform, which will host your website at very nominal rates
