What are the challenges in setting up a food based startup online

Hey trdhs,

I`m hoping to launch an online food (south Indian cuisine) delivery start-up in Hyderabad, Can anyone suggest who are the major players and things to consider before starting a food delivery start up, Is it a good idea to mostly concentrate on creating online sales rather than a physical setup or a QSR ? We decided that we will create our own food instead of tying up with restaurants. Need your valuable opinion on things to consider.

Cheers.

  1. Hi Saif,

Congratulations on taking the next step required for your venture. Most of the ventures die in the idea stage only. Anyway, coming back to the points to remember while setting up an online food based startup.

    1. First and foremost thing is that people don’t trust ordering food online. Since it has to do with an immediate requirement, they believe in ordering it physically or on phone. So, you can although take it online but make sure you setup a phone no. for taking orders as well. Make it visible prominently online so that people can call you if required.

    2. Now, Second important step is the combination of Quality and Price – Now, imagine, when you can order South Indian from a good restaurant or a QSR which are available in every locality. They are tried and tested, why would you order it online from a new portal ? And even if I want to go online, there are many options like Zomato , tastykhana, foodpanad , justeat who generally have tie ups with best and rest of the industry in the area and give free home delivery as well.

    3. I am not trying to say NO to your venture, but believe me, most of the ventures die because of lack of planning and vision. Have a look around you and ask yourself why would you like to order South Indian from your own site ( as a consumer ) instead of the options mentioned above. Unless you have a very strong reason, don’t go ahead.

    4. Now if you’ve found a strong USP and you certainly believe that people will have a reason to come to your portal and order, then make a great prototype and test it nearby your area. Start with small and see how people are responding. Make sure you have a clear goal defined on the portal, understand the behaviour of the people coming to your portal, look at the analytics and figure out what’s right and what needs to be changed. Optimize your portal with the minimum spends and then scale.

I hope you’ll find these points helpful.

  2. Still a little confused, are you planning to deliver dishes that you prepare through online mediums only?

Or are you looking to build up just an online ordering portal?

  3. Food never goes out of fashion and garnish it with a medium that always stays fashionable, you’ve struck it right.

The biggest challenge is food should stay as fresh and palatable as the conveniences of technology.

Seamless delivery logistics is something no food venture can afford to compromise on.

From what I understand, your idea works on food e-commerce as a business model. Hence its important that your menu line is specifically designed with online order sales as its yardstick.

Can the food can be delivered semi-cooked and ready to eat with cooking post delivering with little effort. Of course the shelf life of perishable items will play an imperative role.
