+1 or -1 ? My experience with the Google “social” buttons on the Rodinhoods

In general, I don’t participate in forums. And I hardly ever post comments on blogs. Like 99% of the population, I tend to consume far more content than I produce.

Yet I am an active participant on the Rodinhoods, because I find it a worthwhile way to spend my time.

Getting on to the point – I noticed very recently that the Google +1 button (which is their equivalent of a Facebook ‘like’) had been integrated into the forum :

I was very happy when I saw this, as it would help me promote the forum further. Unfortunately, doing so resulted in the following :

Gah ! What gives, Google ?! Why can’t we use the +1 button when logged into a Google Apps account ?!

Any ideas on workarounds for this ? It honestly is a pain to login to my @gmail account just for this. I suspect that many other people must be facing the same problem.

  1. Yes, this is a problem. A workaround is that you turn on the ‘multiple sign-in’ feature in your both Gmail and Google Apps account. Then, you can sign in to both your Gmail and Google Apps account at a time, in one single browser, in two different tabs or even in the same window. Now, when you +1, it will take your Gmail id! So if you are using your personal comp, you can leave the Gmail account signed in, which will take care of your +1 needs, while you work in your Google Apps account.

  2. @Devgad – I did try that before, but it still seems to use my Google apps account preferentially. Perhaps it is the order you sign in ? I’ll try logging in to Gmail first and then Google apps and see what happens.

  3. Good point. I think the logic is to prevent Corporates to push their links and restrict it to consumers
