An Open Source approach to One Time Passwords ( OTP )

Hi,

https://motp.in/images/motp.png

We thought of bringing a cost eliminating solution to One Time Passwords, and hence have started working on an Open Source project, codenamed mOTP. ( Collaborating with some of the successful entrepreneurs from Telco Industry )

Essentially an idea still remains the same, to validate user’s identity by pushing a one time password to his phone device, but we have adapted bit different approach to achieve it.

Its a simple API implementation, Which pushes OTP to your user’s device ( Landline / Mobile etc ) with absolutely no costs. Moreover, the one single API can be used for phone verifications across the globe. So you need not write any special program for geography specific customers, you need not worry about the varying cost per sms…Its an Open Source project, we only expect your contribution towards making it better and more useful.

Thanks,
Do share your opinion, feedback, suggestions, points to take care etc etc.
Your time and feedback is truly appreciated.

  1. A much needed solution! Thanks so much! 🙂

  2. I am happy that you found it so useful.

    Do evaluate / Implement it and let us know your feedback to make it further useful;

  3. Have you thought of any Possible use cases in Business Process IT?

How about using it to generate waiting tickets in banks or access control for visitors in secure offices/buildings etc?

If you have the ideas we have the Capital

    Best regards

  4. Hi Arun,

Thank you for showing interest in our Idea 😉

Yes, It has a lot of use cases.
But while developing mOTP ( https://mOTP.in ) platform, I mainly focused around Security Implementations ( Two Factor Authentication ).

Viz. It can be a very very cheaper and effective alternative to OTP ( which works across the Globe and not specific region, as limited by sms reach ) ( One time passwords, which wont need sms )

More over one of the start-up is evaluating it to replace RSA tokens and the cost associated with mOTp based authentication. ( Here is the similar project launched by Symantec, but is backed by SMS OTP  https://www.symantec.com/cmp/resp/?cid=vip_authentication )

    Edit:
many Fortune 500 MNCs have already started scrapping down the RSA token implementation as it incurs Device Cost + Service Cost

  5. Hi Rahul,
I am having issues with the reliability of the mOTP service. How can I resolve this? Do you provide support?

  6. Hi,

Yes, Please drop the issue description ( along with the device / phone model information ) to Team.motp@dial2verify.in and we would look into it.

Some commonly reported bugs / issues were, related to smartphones*** not able to consistently detect / receive mOTP.

Please send me your issue details and we would definitely find a quick work around for it 🙂

    Edit:
Common reasons for motp not being received were as follows,

As a general rule, mOTP server establishes connection with your phone device for merely 3-4 seconds. Most smartphones / phones with keypad lock (security code) are not capable of detecting / rendering an event with duration less than 3-4 seconds. Hence some phones drop the mOTP received and do not render on the screen.

    To confirm this,
    We performed few experiments,
    1. by increasing the device contact duration to 5-6 seconds, and all the mOTPs sent were received correctly.
    2. By unlocking the phone while performing experiment, and mOTPs were received correctly.

Based on these results and data collected, we would enhance the API in future releases.

So I would encourage you to please report any issues you encounter while performing tests 🙂
