How can I sell a mobile, location-based, digital OOH Advertising Channel?

Fellow Rodinhoods,

We have been working on building a mobile, location-based, digital OOH Advertising platform. We are planning to launch our operations post Diwali, 2014. We are currently in talks with carriers (radio taxis). There are a plethora of applications of this platform and that could be another topic discussion.

So without wasting much time, I would like to post some questions to my fellow Rodinhoods:

  1. How does a brand/company select media for its advertisement promotions?
  2. What is the decision making process for media selection decisions?
  3. What would brands/companies look for in an offering like this (if you were to be the brand)?
  4. Whom should I target for my sales pitch – the brand/company or the Advertising Agency?
  5. How can I approach the brand/company or the Advertising Agency with my offering?
  6. As a startup, should I target volumes (through Advertising Agencies) or margins (directly through the brand/company) to get off to a positive start?

As I understand, a lot of decision making in this regard rests with the Advertising Agencies of these brands/companies. But again, I can’t be sure and therefore, I need insights from you all, especially the folks in the marketing and advertising domain.

Any help/leads/pointers will be appreciated! Looking forward to a healthy discussion!

Regards,

Amit

  1. Bump!

  2. amit – since you are based in delhi – pls try to meet abhik – he runs a digital agency in gurgaon. he will be able to give you better insights. am sharing your link with him now.

there are so many variables here. smaller companies might not have one dedicated agency.

also, if you can get an appointment with kapil ohri (ogilvy one) he might be able to throw some light on the process.

go through our digital section and ping pawan deokule, deep malhotra and others – they all run digital agencies.

perhaps you should start by reaching out to startup agencies?

  3. Hey, Thanks Asha 🙂

For selling media space, first approach the media planning / buying agencies (and not the creative agency)…coz they are the ones who recommend platforms to their big clients.

It will be hard but if you crack one, it will be much easier after that.

Going after individual clients is difficult as they first have to buy into the concept, then you as a company. Then they will ask their agency if it’s a good idea and if the agency shuts you down, then it’s an uphill task.

Do you have a website where you explain your concept in more detail ?

  4. Thank you Asha Ma’am for pushing this!

Thank you Abhik for your inputs! I agree with what you say!

The website (and a lot of other formalities like company registration, etc.) is currently a WIP. I can send you a concept note explaining what exactly we are trying to do. If you are in Gurgaon/Delhi, we can catch up for a coffee, on Sunday perhaps?
