About me – Nikhilesh Tayal

Founded stagephod to pursue my love for theater and filmmaking. I started making short films and experienced the problems faced by independent video creators. When I spent time with other filmmakers, I realized that there are many filmmakers taking up video related assignments from organizations to earn some money, and on the other hand couple of my entrepreneur friends were looking for filmmakers.

The initial idea was to create a platform where filmmakers and other artists can showcase their work and find people to collaborate with. I then decided that this could be converted into a marketplace as there are many people on both sides.

This is my second startup, first was CVBhejo, which was a recruitment platform for Tier 2 and Tier 3 Indian cities so have a fair experience with startups from founding to funding to shut down. My startup was accelerated by The Morpheus in 2012. During that period, I was also selected by Bloomberg TV in Top 10 emerging entrepreneurs for its TV series, ‘The Pitch’. After closing down CVBhejo, I worked as recruitment advisor for The Morpheus gang portfolio companies.

Pivot to marketplace for video makers

After interacting with filmmakers, I realized that having a marketplace will add more value to a filmmaker’s life by providing them work opportunities and also will make life easy for startups/ brands/ NGOs by giving them a platform to find video makers.”

Currently 85 startups including SnapDeal, CashKaro and Commonfloor are using the platform. 200+ filmmakers are associated with us.

Some of the Viral Videos made through Stagephod

Stagephod’s power resides in lively and constantly growing a community of filmmakers across India. In coming months, we will be working more for this growing community. Customer can choose from a corporate video, promo video, product video, explanatory video, music video, web series, wedding films, social video, short film or wedding films.

I am confident that we can find a video maker of any kind, any budget, and anywhere in India. We got one requirement from Dantewada district, Chattisgarh, and they wanted a video maker from Chattisgarh itself. I was very skeptical about this requirement but to my surprise, we found three people who were from Chattisgarh.

I always wanted to combine theater/films, technology, and entrepreneurship. I think some dots got connected now and some will connect in future.”

  1. interesting name nikhilesh!

i like the idea that you’ve solved a real pain for video makers who don’t like to go out and look for biz.

so do you at stagephod also contribute to the creative process or you are strictly the marketplace only?

  2. Thanks Asha!

No we are not just a market place. We also help clients in the creative process ie script writing and help them in managing the entire project.

You can can check out more about our process here – http://stagephod.com/video-making-process-with-stagephods-production-houses-vis-a-vis-other-production-houses/

  3. Its a great idea and being a part of startup, I can already feel how helpful it can be for us but one quick question, do you think a startup can afford prices like – Min. price for basic quality – Rs. 20,000, Decent quality – Rs. 50000, High quality – 1lac

as mentioned on your website. If a startup has to shell out that much amount of money than there are already other sources which are doing equivalent jobs and maybe in the range of 15k-25k and I am not going to Fiverr.com where explainer video causes much less.

  4. valid point Jitesh.

Video making be it animation or live shoot is an expensive affair. Technology and rise in no. of service providers has actually reduced the cost. But it is not just about the cost. You have to look at the value which video brings – explaining your product precisely/ clearly, helping you in SEO, giving a clear call to action to your users to name a few and is video worth that money or not. 85 startups in 3 months for us actually validated this.

Regarding other options, yes cheaper alternatives are available and they are infact for every service/ product. Being a self funded and bootstrapped startup myself, I recommend you to explore those but expert and professional help from a video maker will obviously cost more.

  5. Great work. Wish you best, Nikhilesh.

  6. Thanks Pardeep 🙂

  7. This is actually quite a useful service. I’m a fan of StagePhod, having used the website on 2 occasions already. One doesn’t always have quick access to good film makers.

    Good work Nikhilesh!

  8. Thanks a lot Kartic!

  9. Great idea! For firms like mine, which make only short animated videos, it is a good place to get recommended. I wish you guys all the success! Do let me know how our teams can connect. My company is Barefoot Consultancy. And here are some of the videos we have done:

Please create your profile here – http://stagephod.com/filmmakers-production-houses-create-a-profile/ and we will take it from there.

  11. Nice.. I can see a use for this for many startups. 🙂

Currently, for a new user, the only place to search for a video maker is Google.

I have a doubt, how do you make repeat customers come back to the site? I mean if someone has used a particular video maker from Stagephod, won’t they contact the video maker directly next time?

  12. Mubaid,

Currently we are doing this by helping clients

     – in saving money (if possible) through jugaads

    – by refining the script

    – in managing their projects professionally

I am open for other possibilities also – how can we add more value to the client. Please let me know if you have any suggestions

  13. That’s exactly what I was thinking Nikhilesh. The concept it great. You see, for past 2 days, I have been searching for a video maker for making a book trailer for my upcoming book. In such cases, Stagephod can become one stop shop for finding a vendor.

But we need to add some value-add so that people keep coming to site for each and every requirement instead of directly going to the vendor. That value-add is the key to take Stagephod to the next level.

I will try to think some ideas from my past experiences and will surely post it here.. 🙂

  14. waiting… 🙂

  15. Hey Nikhilesh, good to see you here.

Got Stagephod’s reference through Yourstory and got a video done from them. I liked the way they helped me in entire process. Only thing I suggest is that you automate some of your processes. All the best!

    Cheers,
  16. Thanks Akhil

  20. Guys,

    Hope you like it 🙂

  21. Mubaid,

So we realised that concept is king in this industry and so started giving concepts ourselves to all the clients and it started working for us. We the built an inhouse team of script writers and so far its working for us.
