Talk on Puberty and Child Sexual Abuse can be easy

How To Tell Your Child: The story unfolds

This is a story of a working mom of 2 little girls. Like all moms, she loved her angels to the moon and back. As they became older and independent, having their own little social circles, she found the need to teach them about growing up. She had to teach them to stay safe without scaring them.

She reached out to her girlfriends. All agreed that growing up had not been easy. Though they shared a lot of awkward and fun stories, they still had no clue how to talk to their own children. Wanting lessons that were fun yet honest, she set out to create it.

She met with her colleagues and friends to think over it .It was a pyjama meeting over BEER and WINE. 4 hours into the much hyped meeting, there was NOTHING. Another hour later, one among the group had an eureka moment. She said “dragon” and passed out.

Now her story had to have a Dragon. It was perfect. He represented all the growing up fears that she had. And same fear that her girls and their friends will have now. He was the harbinger of all bad things to come. They decided to call him Mr.Puberty a.k.a Mr.P.

Mr.Puberty came with myths and shame. Growing up also meant being exposed to the world away from loving caregivers. When the word SEX is a taboo, how could she explain child sexual abuse to her girls? All this was serious stuff and she had to prepare her girls for it.

Watch our fiesty mom in action below:

Sure, growing up meant unusual changes, but a change in attitude and perception could make her a winner. Couldn’t she deal with it having fun? She soon came to realize that she had misunderstood Mr. Puberty. He was tamable and in fact outright silly. He was Mr. P, the misunderstood dragon.

And the fun lessons began. In the lesson on puberty in boys, Mr.P tries hard, very hard to teach Ryan. But know-it-all Ryan takes Mr. P by surprise and takes him on a ride…quite literally.

And then came Ms.P, the zany dragon. Her lesson on puberty in girls did not start with the ram head uterus that most of us have and will never see in our lifetimes. It was easy and relevant. She sings and dances with Susie while teaching her. And boy-oh-boy when she sings, she sounds like a million bucks.

Ms.P had another important lesson to teach, the one on much feared sexual abuse. She stepped away from the traditional “Good Touch, Bad Touch” approach and invented a brand new visual vocabulary. It was brilliant. So brilliant that a child psychologist in USA who saw it said
“I did look at the video and what a wonderful way of explaining a tough topic. The subject has been handled very carefully and I especially liked the alerts that you have introduced. I look forward to seeing more from you and using the videos and accompanying workbooks with my clients as well as for our child safety seminars. Bravo.”

  3. yep! am watching it as we speak. i’ve told her a rodinhooder has made some awesome videos that we need to watch together today!

deepa – i read somewhere that a very good thing to do is give your child a password so if an acquaintance/neighbour ever comes up and tells your child that your mom/dad sent me to pick you up or your parents had an accident or any such thing – the child needs to ask that person THE PASSWORD.

  4. Very very interesting idea indeed! Will find way to put that in..Thanks
