http://www.indiastudycenter.com/univ/list.htm As per this study there are 45000+ colleges. Let me put an averagage of 500 kids per institution its 2,25,00,000.From what i am aware of /experiences, the only service that an institution seems to care about vis a vis student is placements. Each college has a placement cell and on an average it has 2 employees to serve the students. So a rough guestimate would be 90000 placement officers across India.

Apart from placement services, some colleges used to have a presence in training. However, this is not a focus area of colleges as students themselves choose where they want to undergo extra trainings if any because of several environmental factors

Let's move back to the placement thing, As per a 4 year old Nascomm study, they said 25% of the students are only employable. It might be a little better now. I am not sure about other industries though. So we will take it as 25% ie 5625000 students out of 22500000 have the necessary skills to be employed. The real figures may be much lower or higher. ie a staffing efficiency of 63 per placement officer @ a rate of 5 -6 placements per month

Placement officer does a lot more than just placement but his need is most essential during the peak placement season.Look at the other problem 45000 placement officers are trying to reach out to let's say 2000 companies ask them to visit their premises for placements/seminars/blah blah. That's a lot of work for the companies to handle. usually there is a fresher recruitment team/development team to handle that. Companies believe such teams are strategic and invest a lot of resources. I have worked in one of thoses teams. From my experience i can tell that it's the creame institutes that benefit while the remaining institutions left high and dry.

So, my view is that these Placement Cells are inefficient, redundant and there is space for a company to perform a Placement Cell operations for Educational institutions.I am just wondering if there is a consolidation opportunity in this area. Is it worth exploring ?

I know there are are a lots of constraints. I want to understand them from your perspective. Setting up a Professional Placement Cell is a pathway to improving the Quality of Education in India.

I am in the process of bootstrapping my company. I am in the business for last 6 months. you can learn a bit more http://edufinity.net  http://edufinity.ning.com

Looking forward to your inputs. If you know of someone doing this, kindly let me know.
