Startup

Any Twitter users? Need feedback on a beta version of our product.

Hi Guys,

I am Gaurav based out of Delhi. Jumped the job cubicle in end 2010, & Co-founded with friends a startup in renewable energy, & another in UAVs in 2011. The UAVs one got acquired (luckily, but for peanuts though), & renewables one was mostly linked with govt. so we decided to avoid all the red-tape & govt BS, & switched to e-commerce early 2013, specific to renewable. But so much interaction with govt. & marketing end, I decided to rethink & realised I am better fitted at a technical end. Decided to take a break & did a few courses related to programming (I had worked in a robotics company in ggn for 3 years 2007-2010, converting DRDO tanks into unmanned vehicles),  & switched back to tech, with a US based startup as an early employee earlier this year. They were in very early stage & building something really cool so I jumped in. Sumit ( sumit_taank ) & Vishal  ( vmishRRa ) are voracious readers & started building this to solve their own problem of discovering quality blogs/opinions/articles on deep topical interests. The 1st blog explains the motivation behind starting this.

The team has now grown to 9 FTE, 4 engineers via vendors, 3 interns & after 10 months of endless hours, we launched a beta version last week. we humbly request you all to login at www.rightrelevance.com & try searching for relevant content & influencers. I will give a quick overview of the product below:

We are using data mining over the 600M twitter handles to extract 2M top influencers (nothing fancy, just a term we coined :-p ), & clustering the 2M experts aka influencers into 35000 Topical categories (basically 35000 highly probable topics. We are still improving this as we are getting more & more data). The content by the experts is extracted as soon as its tweeted & classified in related topic, made available at a single place at www.rightrelevance.com for discovering, sharing & engagement.

We feel its going to be an amazing way for the user to discover pertinent and new articles/blogs/opinions/videos etc on deep topics you like to read about! Some of my personal favourites are Mindfulness, adventure travel, Indian music, Apache storm, apache hadoop, behavioral economics, robotics, documentary films, IPL, BJP.

You can search for top experts, articles & conversations in those topics. screenshots attached below.

Both rodinhoods & alok are experts in our index.

We would love to hear from you guys any feedback to social@rightrelevance.com or here which we can incorporate before moving out of beta version.

Thanks,

gaurav & the entire @rightrelevance team.

  1. hey gaurav,

your fb page says you’re based in california? is the rest of the team there?

  2. Hi Gaurav,

    Nice and clean website…!!

    Just one suggestion:

It would be good if you can add some kind of filters while scraping articles and influencers. If we can filter by country or event industry that will be great.

  3. Hey Asha,

Yes, the company is registered in Silicon valley, Calif, & 4 full time guys are there. 5 full time guys in India (everyone is working from home in Jaipur/Delhi/Ghaziabad/Chandigarh). We decided to avoid all the paper work for indian subsidiary company registration for a while, so no office in India.

  4. Hi Gaurav,

This is an interesting product. Just signed up for it and it does look useful.

However, the data at the current moment is global.

E.g. I run a financial advisory firm and the topics of interest to me at the moment include Personal Finance, Investing etc.

When I added these as a topic, I get results and influencers from across the globe. However, data at a local level would be of more interest to me at the moment.

Are you guys planning to add local / region level filtering to the results. If that is on the cards, I think it might help a lot of folks curating stuff better on twitter.

But yes, this does reduce a lot of noise on twitter 🙂

    All the best.

    cheers

  5. Nice – tried few searches and the results were excellent. More specifically – since my interest too is in stream processing – searched for Apache Storm and got to read few articles which I would have otherwise missed!

  6. Hey Gaurav, I am unable to use your product. I just sign up with twitter account @chetanhere and unable to select anything, as everything is coming in inactive mode on home screen of application. There might be some problem with my approach also but I am unable to use.

I am using it on Safari on Mac.

  7. Thanks Vivek. Our entire pipelines for getting continuous feed is build on apache storm. Glad to hear you liked it! You should also check apache hadoop & apache solr.

    gaurav

  8. Storm is a perfect choice of technology for the use-case you have – Good luck with the product!

  9. Hey chetan,

I use it on mac + safari all the time, but apologies for some intermittent glitches. can you try http://www.rightrelevance.com & login in via the twitter login icon on right? Kindly confirm when you are able to login!

  10. Is there an API ?

You could monetize via the API route.

I am looking for travel related info, so people planning trips, flights, rides? anything on this subject ?

  11. Hi Gaurav,

I used it first hand and I was quite happy with the features you have in it. Stuff like – saving the article helps me a lot since I’m on the lookout for good articles which I can read later. I had a small issue when I tried to share an article on linkedin. When I selected the linkedin checkbox – it rightly opened the authentication box. But then I closed the box (since I decided that I don’t want to share on linkedin anymore) the checkbox was still active. Not a big issue – more on the user experience side.

You are clearly assigning your own scores or using some score (like a klout score). I find this to be untapped potential. Can you work more on this line. For eg:I follow some articles and blogs religiously. Can I know the influencer score for that particular handle. (Even if its not an influencer, I would like to know how it compares to the other influencer scores)

You might have it in your product pipeline – but what you can definitely do is: Allow users to club different posts or topics together and build up a newsletter – online. This entire customized newsletter can then be shareable entirely. This can then be used as a personlized template and the fields can be populated everyday with new content, keeping the template constant. All I then need to do is – login here, check my customized template, select more stuff or delete stuff that I dont want and then share the entire newsletter. I think this would really build value as well.

One more thing is – when sharing, can I include the article image in the tweet / post? I shared on twitter, but there was no option to include the image. I think you should try that. Images in the posts  / tweets add value.

Overall its a really good tool. I’v bookmarked this and I find use for it personally. Do reach out to me in case you would like to discuss more stuff (@shwaytaj) – I like working on such products.

  12. Really nice+clean design. and interesting product too. Did a quick search and found great stuff…will get back after few days after downloading/playing with the app. best wishes!

    How does the scoring work?

  13. Hey Mansoor,

There is location filer on home page on the right side, but that’s only available when searching for influencers. Will take advice & add that for location based articles as well!.

Topical segregation is there & constantly being improved

    gaurav

  14. I don’t know where I am wrong but it is something I am getting this after signing up through twitter link but unable to click anywhere on it. I also processed two steps of authenticating app in between.

  15. Hey Chetan,

Sincere apologies for the delay. We are looking into the problem. & will get back to you very soon!

I tested with a new account on my safari & it asked for the email address & tour & then it was through. Could you share what is your Mac & safari version? May be its version specific issue which we haven’t tested on.

    gaurav

  16. Yes, all functionality is made available via REST APIs and the portal and iPhone app are built on top of those. Please contact vishal@rightrelevance.com for more details.

  17. Hi Cheten, we’re debugging and think we understand the problem. Would you be open to us sending an email to inform you of the fix? Sorry about the trouble and thanks a lot for reporting this!

  18. Thanks Vivek. Please feel free to send feedback either here or via the in-app feedback form. Would appreciate your input.

  19. I also love to use Android app of yours, if you have some. I will share surely update you about issue as I seriously want to get hands on it. Please share your email id to report issue. My email id is chetan.vashistth@live.com

  20. Hi Abhik, that’s a very interesting use (financial advisory) case and we’ve looked at it from the US perspective. How about sending me an email at vishal@rightrelevance.com and we can discuss details? I *think* we can enable the India specific stream but would need some domain expertise data from you.

  21. Shwaytaj, thanks a lot for the detailed and insightful feedback! Hope you don’t mind, we’re planning to take you up on the offer of reaching out to you.. 🙂

  22. Hi Rishi, thanks for the feedback. Please feel free to send detailed feedback either via the in-app feedback form or email directly to social@rightrelevance.com.

The scoring is based on 2 levels of graph processing. One is global, pagerank-like, whereby we identify influencers. The second step is after topical graph partitioning (identifying influencer communities for each topic), where we leverage the interlinks between influencers belonging to a topical community (subgraph) to obtain the topical score for an influencer.

  23. Hi Asha, the company is Silicon Valley and Delhi based (both co-founders and other 2 founding engineers in SV are from Delhi). As Gaurav pointed out, our recent hirings have made the Delhi team bigger in size than SV and we hope to continue that.. 🙂

  24. Sure.

  25. I know another product that does something similar – wizikey. Do check it out.

  26. Hi Amit, looked at it and not sure it has the depth of topics, influencers views, near real-time nature, relevance and quality of content that we’re striving for. Would love for you to try some topics and provide feedback and suggest improvements. Thanx!

  27. hi gaurav,

long time no word! any updates on right relevance? i’m sure rodinhooders would love to know!
