I posted here few months ago and we have been looking for an SEO expert ever since. Alas, I’ve decided to take care of our SEO efforts myself. I’ve been reading blogs like quicksprout & MOZ. These blogs have helped, however, I am stuck at one particular point and I need a small help.
To kickstart our SEO efforts, I decided first to research keyword search volume using Google Keyword Planner.
I typed in ‘Company Registration’ and the result was ‘4400’. The number seemed quite low for total searches across India in a month!
I tried other keywords like ‘Trademark Application’, ‘Non Disclosure Agreement’, ‘Rent Agreement’ and for each of them, Google gave numbers in few thousands.
So, what this number actually is? Does it mean only 4400 people searched for ‘Company Registration’ across India in one month? :O
Thank you in advance.. 🙂
Aneja Raj
It dos not mean 4400 people searched it means there were a total of 4400 searches. One person could have searched three times. Also understand the differences between searches and results in the context of SEO. There could be searches, but not necessary that every time you search, your ad will be displayed as a result. But to answer your question specifically, the number you see is the search volume. Details below. Always better to access google’s own tutorial for help. Its most accurate.

Hi Niraj,
As unbelievable as it may seem it is true, only that many people are searching for that keyword but you might want to consider a few points :
1. Google keyword planner only gives you estimates or rather average number of searches so it might be higher than what is states there and can be lower from what it states there.
2. .The numbers you are seeing are for that particular keyword alone. When you doing keyword research the most important thing to do is put yourself into the searchers shoes, what else would he type into Google and how else will he look for information? Lets take an example for company registration, there maybe different ways in which the person might be looking for that particular information it can
– How to register a company in India
– Company registration in India
– Company formation in India
– Steps to register a company in India.
– Documents required to register a company in India.
And it can be localized also like
– Company registration in Bangalore
– How to register a company in Hyderabad.
So now when you look at the cumulative number for searches that is happening for these keywords it will be much more than 4400 , it might be around 10,000 . For SEOers 10k searches is huge.
3. Having said that, Google never gives you data as to what percentage of these searches were unique. For example I might have searched for company registration in India and would have been unsatisfied with the results so might have gone ahead to search for how to register a company in India. So if you take the number of unique searches the number will be quite less than what you think it is. If you already disappointed by the low search volume sorry to disspoint you even more.
If you can give me your email address I can help you out with your SEO even more.
I hope that helped 🙂

Hi Aneja.
Thank you so much for the reply.
I went through the tutorial. But I am still baffled!
To think that there were only approximately 4400 searches on Google for Company Registration is something I cannot digest.
To put this in perspective, I searched for ‘Priyanka Chopra Images’ on the keyword planner tool. And if Google is to be believed, there were only 2900 searches for that particular keyword (I expected that to be in millions!!). So Google is saying me that less than 100 searches a day are made for ‘Priyanka Chopra Images’ across India!!!!!!
Its hard to dispute Google.. But I don’t believe Google Keyword Planner is accurate (or even a close estimate).

Hey Neeraj! VakilSearch was mentioned during Lucknow’s First Rodinhood’s Coffeemeet.. https://www.therodinhoods.com/forum/topics/lucknow-s-first-rodinhood-cof… (its a long post, you can CTRL-F Vakil Search!).. This may ease your headache little bit!
SEO based on targeting strong keywords like “Company Registration” is now almost over. The new trend is long tail of keyword search. Do read blogs on CopyBlogger.com; HubSpot.com and ContentMarketingInstitute.com to get an idea. &TLDR: Create awesome content where terms like Company, Registration, Trademark, Copyright, Business, Entrepreneurship etc naturally comes inbetween. Google will take care after that.. All the best!

Niraj, my advice:
1. Screw the SEO focus. Tag your pages properly, and make sure the entire site is properly crawable by googlebot.
2. Focus on your conversion funnel. You’re doing your gig to make money right?
3. Ignore the keyword tool. The keyword volume is what it is. And there is no need to worry about one synonym having more searches than other. The algo compensates for that.
4. To gain traction in organic rankings (what we used to call SEO) you need to demonstrate authenticity and subject matter expertise. Focus on your practice areas and build content and social media buzz around each practice. Google will reward you once it believes you are a subject matter expert. Make sure you are set up for Google Authorship.
5. You can skip #4 and go directly to paid advertising. Will cost you about the same maybe even a little less.
6. Do #4 & #5 and the combined lift from both will be greater than each on its own. i.e. the sum is greater than the parts.

I hope I am not late on this. There are 3 stages to grow your business:
Now depending on your product, all stages plays different roles, for some they can enjoy life with Pay X get Y Sales (ads), as they have good margins and good conversion ratios (+ volume). Some can’t survive without organic growth and some can’t without branding …. say electricity company gets close to 50% search engine traffic (as branding means less here) compare to a telecom company which gets over 80% brand traffic (both search and direct) … so you need to balance it well.
Also from SEO, you need to be thoughtful, think ROI, think progressive, like we are focusing on kolkata related keywords first and we rank for most of it, then we are focusing on digital marketing keywords than seo or ppc as thats what future is.
Again from SEO, there are few things: Direction (keywords), content (info), links (popularity) … you can read this https://www.techshu.com/services/seo/seo-audit/how-google-ranks-websites
Also think about right digital mix selection https://www.techshu.com/services/process
You can use some of the tools for your help https://www.techshu.com/tools
Hope it helps. Thanks!

Let me stick with the question,
Google recently changed its keyword tool to keyword planner this shift has some changes from the traditional tool.
No match type data for search volume
No device targeting
Earlier by default setting was “broad” so you would have got more number of search count with this but right now by default setting is “Exact” so Google will give only search count for “Company Registration”. So it makes sense to have 4400 number for this exact phrase because people will always use some specifiers after this root keyword.
Below is what Google says about this ,
Also current tool gives only Google data not for its search partners. You need to specify it if you are looking for Google+Search Partners data if you do then count will 5400 for exact.
How to get an accurate data?
To do this you need to mention all the possible combinations of these keywords keeping the user in mind like how they will search? To check most frequent searches with your rot keyword use Ubersuggest Keyword Tool. This tool will give you all Google auto suggested keywords for your root keyword.
Include maximum broad modifications possible and add some long tail keywords you will get the accurate number.
If you are looking for some strategies for your new site, then you can get here
I hope this answers your question. Still need more information? Connect me to skype @amolpomane will be happy to solve any query.
Thanks

Asha,
I believe I should post more often.. 😀

Hi Amol,
Thank you so much for helping out.
I’ll reach out to you soon on Skype maybe.
Sadly, ubersuggest keyword tool does not have an option to search for ‘India’. Also the tool seems to be down.. It’ll be really helpful if you can share some more tool I can use for SEO efforts.
Thank you once again. 🙂
