Hey everyone,

Am writing in today because I’ve been blogging since the past two months and am now looking at spreading the wings of the blog and trying to slowly monetise it and evolve the blog into a business. For this I had a few questions which I was hoping my fellow Rodinhooders could help me with.

What’s the blog about?: I discovered that there are few resources online for parsis and others interested in Parsi cooking. Most recipes within the community continue to passed down through grandmother’s and through families and there are only a handful of recipe books as well where most dishes are things that can only be cooked on special occasions rather than on a daily basis. I therefore started the blog documenting my journey into learning Parsi food. 

Ideas for Monetisation:

1. AdSense – I hear that this is the way that most blogs start making money. However, my readership is probably not that high yet – averaging 50 views/day and 200 views on days that posts are published. So, would ads even help me with revenue or would having them on the blog take away from the overall reading experience? Most of the recipes there are quite basic so I am not sure if this is a good option or not.

2. Selling adspace to other Parsi homecooks & restaurants – there are lots of old grannies and other aunties making Parsi food such as chutneys, cutlets, Dar ni Pori’s etc from their home. Most of their business is generally through word of mouth so would they be open to placing ads? It could also be a promoted post

3. Selling my classic dishes – I am quite good at making dips such as hummus, curry masalas, choc brownies and other chocolate treats. I was thinking then of expanding the brand via a Facebook page and selling my the ‘Bawi Bride’ brand of food.

Some other questions:

1. Can a blog have its own Facebook page?

2. Could you help identify new ways to spread the word about the blog – is PR the right time for this?

3. Looking also to connect with someone to help me optimise the blog for SEO as i am very new to WordPress. 

I’ve seen some great response to the blog so far and want to strike while the readership around it is building.

  2. These look delicious! Yum!  I am not an experienced blogger but I’ll try answering some of your questions.

    A blog can definitely have its own Facebook page. In fact, I would recommend that you have one.

    About advertising, I would recommend you to to have much bigger subscriber base before starting advertising.

    Install the plugin to start optimizing your website for SEO (https://wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/).

    SEO is a big topic and it even changes frequently. A strategy working today may not qork later. But for a long term strategy, producing great content regularly is key.

    One of the fastest ways to increase your readership is to do guest blogs on other popular blogs.

    Always collect your reader’s email ID and email them about new content often.

    Thanks so much for the tips and also for the SEO plugin. I have been trying to find something like this but due to my inexperience with wordpress I get scared to pick one as you never know what you get – thanks for this recommendation though I will try it out.

    The guest blog idea is a good one and something we personally follow for the org I work in. However, I am unclear on why another food blogger would accept my recipe as a guest post – perhaps I need to do some more research into this.

  6. Hey, the SEO plugin is one of the most popular and feature ricj. I use it on my website’s blog wwww.dressmyphone.in/blog.

    The idea of a guest blog is simple. If you have a great recipe, then you approach a few food blogs and tell them that you can give their readers some awesome content (recipes in your case). Now no blogger can refuse to make his readers happier. In return you are allowed to link back to your own blog (this may wary from blog to blog). So its a win-win for both you, the blog which you posted on and the readers which read your blog post. 

    You may find food blogs that accept guest posts by searching the following in google

    “Guest Blog” + “<Your keywords>”

    “Write for us” + “<Your keywords>”

    Just replace <Your keywords> with something like “Parsi food blog” etc and note down the URL’s of the top results.

    Just a Note, you can have the Page Title as “Welcome to the BawiBride” or anything similar or as per your liking instead of the default domain name listing.

    I Think even Hitesh Bhatia had a Similar Post recently to which I had answered on similar lines, however in your case you can definitely make a Facebook page with the Selection as a BLOG from the various made available and share the posts on your blog on the page, for Automation if your Blog is WordPress related you can integrate many Social Media Widgets integrating Twitter, facebook as well as other useful Blog addins and Plugins to make it more interactive.

  8. Hey Perzen, this is looking good and since you seem to have a passion for it go for it!

    Few thoughts want to share – 

    1. I was seeing this movie(again!) – The Social Network, when Mark is against commercializing his social network whereas his friend CFO Eduardo wanted to monetize it asap to make it in a business. Then enter Sean Parker and an interesting analogy was shared, why advertise the party and say it will last only till 11 PM. So how does it relate to your query…well I would see if I can try to have more page-views on the site before I look at putting ads. Ads do distract and there is a possibility that some of your viewers may feel its cluttering. Once you have a good steady number of visitors you can slowly look at commercializing it. 

    2. Yes a blog or rather a brand can have its own FB page. So BawiBride can become a brand which is also the name of your blog and fire up the FB page! 

    3. You can have a twitter handle for BawiBride if you don’t have it already. Further down, ideally you should link your blog, twitters and FB. In WordPress its just a click to share your blog post to Twitter/FB/LinkedIn while you are posting it up.

    4. Your second idea is interesting though tricky, if you are advertising other people, they can take away from your business if you do want to end up selling your dishes. But this can also be a source of revenue where people would want to promote thru you seeing the steady number of visitors. This can be worked out, just that I don’t see this should be the immediate focus/priority. You have already mentioned Bawi Bride brand of food which is a natural progression. Either this can be exclusively available online, or you can also start selling in stores/hypermarkets/niche stores like Nature’s Basket etc if you can show a good demand for the same.

Will get cracking on the SM pages this weekend too. However, just a question – given I probably don’t have the bandwidth to effectively manage both Twitter and FB – would you suggest doing just one properly? If so, Facebook or Twitter?

    The Bawi Bride brand of food is something am considering seriously but am having a tough time trying to find bottle suppliers. If you know anyone or have any suggestions on that too it would be great!

  14. Perzen, I will keep it short and sweet.. A Food Blog should be able to make my mouth watery instantly.. And that can be best achieved with a good theme.. Don’t even consider yourself to be a Blog.. In fact think of it like a Portfolio.. 🙂

    Head straight to ThemeForest and search for themes with keywords like Food and Recipe to get some relevant ones.. Almost 90% of the themes cost less than $50.. And do make sure you go for a Responsive theme, as that way it will display beautifully across mobile phones and tablets..

    Also if you need help installing the theme, I would be more than happy to set aside an hour and set it up for you.. 🙂

  17. You can also monetize it by creating an YouTube Channel.

    Once you get sucess you can scale it up as a Mobile App too and monetize it further with Mobile Adnetworks ( Komli, Inmobi, Google etc)

  19. Perzen – I do read your blog regularly. What drew me towards it was the curiosity factor with respect to Parsi food. It is unique and there is definitely a niche there. 

    Building any kind of content takes time. Here are some other opportunities for you to explore

    1. You cover getting listed in Indieblogger. Why not some international food blogs?

    2. You could review Parsi restaurants alongside Parsi dishes positioning yourself as THE expert on Parsi food. Post a short teaser review on Zomato with a link back to your blog (for an extended review) so anybody coming there will come down to your blog.

    3. You can make youtube videos of cooking parsi food. Then tie up with Food Food and other food channels. Given your niche expertise, there will be a good synergy there.

    4. Finally, to reiterate Vijay’s point, your blog should looks less like a blog and more like a visual treat. Food Photography will help immensely. It is surprisingly easy to do if you have the right light and a half decent camera.

  20. My 2 cents

    1. Your readership is far too low to make any money from adsense, or selling adspace. You will need at least 20 – 30 times the traffic to make INR 30k or something.

    #3 is really really the way to go. Hands down. Selling stuff will get you a higher margin than ads, and a significantly higher conversion rate. Also, the quality of your content will have a direct impact on the sales.

    PS: You need a different theme. Using the default WP theme isn’t really a good strategy. I can’t say about others, but when I see people using the default WP theme, I feel that they do not take their blog seriously. You can get good themes from the WordPress themes repository, or you can buy an excellent theme from themeforest.net

    SEO is a big word. The best way to get traffic is to go the hard way – look for the best foodie blogs in the world, and ask them to write guest posts, participate actively in foodie communities online, use social media, etc …

    Try not to get too deep into ‘linking’. It can give good returns, but it’s shortsighted.

    * Can a blog be a business? Yes, techcrunch is a tech blog, Mashable is a social blog, yours is a food blog. All are businesses. 

    1. Can a blog have its own Facebook page?

    Yes, it must have a facebook page. It may also have ancilliary pages as a marketing initiative for its main page. Like for our blog BMS.co.in , we have BMS Tips as an ancilliary page where we post fun stuff that goes viral.

    2. Could you help identify new ways to spread the word about the blog – is PR the right time for this?

    As mentioned above, leverage facebook and other social channels to spread the word. PR will fall in place in its own. You should get guest bloggers on your blog. Seek parsi communities on social media and ask for their feedback, conduct research stories and publish them, feature parsi’s and their signature dishes etc.

    You have really asked an important question, and to fact I have seen many blogs becoming a business, and in later stage the so called BLOG will have a small section (menu) at the corner, and rest all business. Many Bloggers and their Blogs have transformed to Consultants & PR sites respectively, and some into profit making businesses.

    It’s like turning your Passion to Profession, Let me be subjective rather then to be descriptive at the comment section, to your questions,

    1. Yes a Blog can have a FB Page, check mine at  Getsparkz and you can also create LinkedIn Company Page, and subsequently post your company updates, in later stages.

    2. This may not be the right time to go for PR (Paid), but if you write well, and publish great recipes, you will get PR from your subscribers and visitors, it will the best PR what I believe and by PUBLISHING your GREAT Query at RODINHOOD  is half the job done for PR, thanks to the team.

    3. SEO, is a good idea, but if not done by experts and reviewed constantly, it will not give you the feasible ROI. (Moreover Google being a Major Search Engine, you can prefer to optimize their way) check this you will get some idea, so you won’t spend blindly in the name of SEO Google SEO Guide for Starters

    I am just a fellow blogger who started blogging lately; in fact, I became active internet user in 2012 🙂

  25. Perzen, as someone rightly mentioned a good food blog is all about a visual feast…photos have to come alive, it must make one hungry so as to want to eat whatever you are showing! Recipe comes next, people want to see how the dish looks and only then people would see the recipe. 

    So Facebook is a better alternative as it offers more ways to make your Brand come alive! You can share photos, videos, may be have events of your cooking class or an sampling/exhibition(for lack of a better word!) of your packaged food brand! 

    I don’t have a clue on bottle suppliers, but why don’t you check out the type of bottles available and if that’s something or similar you want to have, many do have packing information mentioned on the label. So you can reach through that. Also a call to Just Dial will definitely get you few vendors calling you right away.

    Though my knowledge of Parsi food is just Dhansak and being a pure vegetarian its quite limiting. Still I am excited to see how this goes for you from here on! 

    And say in next 12 months you can also think of having a mobile app to offer everything(videos, recipes, etc) on a palm!

  29. I think the “food” category is extremely crowded and it will thus take some time and plenty of effort to build an active community around the site. 

    AdSense may not be the best monetization option in your case (you have to have a flood of visitors to make anything substantial from AdSense) but what you should explore is video.

    There are quite a few food bloggers in the country who have grown their brand through YouTube channels. You should Google for “Gayatri Vantillu”, “Archana’s Kitchen”, “Manjula’s Kitchen” for ideas.

    With YouTube, you don’t have to worry about SEO factors, the videos are prominently displayed in search results and the other advantage is that you can also monetize the videos by becoming a YouTube partner.

    One thing that I was trying to figure out is, which is your main business, and what’s the supporting activity?

    Are you writing to sell dishes? OR Are you selling dishes to get viewers on your blog?

    My wife left her corporate job a couple of years back, and since then has started a small successful baking business (Memories…with you always!!). While we’ve created her online presence (website, FB, Twitter, Just Dial, Zomato, burrp etc), we’ve consciously stayed away from the blogging piece (writing recipes, asking for user generated recipes etc.). We think it takes too much time to keep it fresh and updated (how many new recipes can you think of every week, and for how long will it sustain?) In her case, her main business is selling baking products, and a very small % of her clientele care about the recipe or blog or contributing to it…so for her a different marketing strategy is needed.

    If you’re primarily looking at blogging as a business, then all the comments are spot on and helpful.  However, if you’re thinking of cooking as a business, then you might want to look at a different strategy.

    Thanks you bring up an interesting point. I guess the correct answer to that right now is that I am still trying to figure it out. I started the blog as Parsi food and everything related to Bawa is a big passion for me. I have in fact found a tome of ancient 200+ recipes so I plan on trying them out one by one and putting them up – hence lack of content is not really an issue. 

    I do try to blog about 2 – 3 times a week. The cooking at this point would be more to support the blogging. However, I am not sure if that is sustainable in the long-term like you point out.  Am interested to hear your strategies on if cooking was the core business. Would it be possible for us to connect offline so that I can pick your brain over a quick call?

  32. While you are Still thinking of Cooking those recipes, Just Keep a Handy CAM handy and record to make some Nice Youtube Videos and Link them too, these can be Ho To or DIY categorized as well, Youtube also pays for Uploaded videos with BIG Hits 🙂 So another medium to start a side earning.

    You can check with our in house Celebrity Chef – RH Saransh Goila for some Tips when required 🙂

    I am Sure he would not mind sharing TV (Media) space in front of the Camera 😉

    you can try “seo all in one” wordpress plugin, one of the best SEO plugin I have used in one of my site.

  34. Do check out MadCurry on Facebook, run by friends of mine.

    1) Having their page on Facebook means they can grow their community easily – friends like new recipes, those get viralled on the platform, and there’s no need to drive consumers from another blog to Facebook.

    2) They have gone the route of selling their food – there’s nothing to make you money more happily than having filled people’s stomachs and the appreciation they give – rather than serving ads for e-commerce sites !

    I am a huge foodie and big time fan of WordPress and also happen to be a digital marketing consultant. I have used WordPress on a lot of websites including my own. Here are my recommendations. ( I have not restricted the suggestions to only SEO but over all performance )

    First of all let me tell you that yes you definitely can make your blog into a business and I personally know a lot of them who still make a good money from their blogs. I myself have learnt a lot from these guys and other places and here are my suggestions. 

    1. Monetization : I strongly urge you to forget about this part now. A lot of people do this mistake and end up losing their readers . Why ? They will feel that you have the website only to make money of it. Although that might be your long term plan your short term plan to get as many readers as possible. And you can get lots and lot of visitors when you add value to them. Whenever people read your blog they should feel that it was worth their time. Your main focus now should be to get them readers. More the merrier. Produce engaging content so that they keep returning back to you. Your aim should be for you to be the authority in your niche ( in your case Parsi food ) 

    2. Content : A lot of people equate content to text and worse they completely forget the fact that they can make reuse the same content on other channels to drive traffic to their blog. One of the simplest way you can re use content is convert your blog post into a video. Make a slide show and record it along with voice and upload it on youtube. Youtube is the second biggest search engine in the world, do not under estimate its power to drive traffic to your website. Now since you have a slide show put it on slideshare. This is yet another traffic source that a lot of people ignore about. These two things can bring you a good healthy amount of traffic to your blog and also very crucial, it will diversify your traffic sources. More on that later. 

    You can also use the photos on flickr, pinterest and drive traffic back to your blog also. Try to reuse content in different forms as much as possible.Don’t give up easily, content marketing can take as much as 1 year to show it’s really effectiveness.

    3. Appearance : I suggest you use a better theme. Use a professional one because when you have a professional not only will it be visually appealing both to yourself and the readers and more importantly it gives the impression that you are indeed serious about what you are writing and doing. If you don’t want to send hit me up ill give you some themes, I have memberships a few sites.

    4. SEO : Ah SEO! The secret to SEO is that you shouldn’t do SEO. You should produce such great content that people will do the SEO for you. There are basically two parts in SEO 

    On site and Off site. On site SEO involves how your website is structured and what needs to be done to your website so that the search engines find it easier to understand your website. Off site SEO is basically building links. Now when you have amazing content people WILL link back to you. This is basically the framework of a viral campaign. Produce amazing content which people will love to read and most importantly share. Let’s see what we can do about your website in terms of SEO shall we. 

    Yoast SEO : This is the best SEO available today for WordPress, hands down. Its so rich with features that you are bound to get overwhelmed but it works like a charm. You can check it out here : https://yoast.com/wordpress/seo/ . This plugin should help you sort with your on site SEO.

    If you find it very difficult to understand you can always hit me up ill help you out. 

    Rich snippets : In terms of SEO this is called standing out of the crowd or maybe being noticed in all the noise. What this does is basically shows rich snippets of your recipe ( for example the photo and how much rating the recipe has got. It will look something like this :

    When people are looking for recipes it will stand out from all the other listings and your click through rate ( number of people who will click on your website in the search results ) thus giving you an advantage over other websites in the results.Pretty neat right?

    Google Authorship : Move this to the HAVE TO DO list . Like somebody has mentioned Google continuously changes its algorithms and the SEO game keep changing and this is one of the change. Google is struggling hard to bring in the social element in their entire user experience which is why they have rolled out Author rank. Basically the more awesome you are as a writer and more often you publish the more Google will love you and they have developed an algorithm to determine your rank. In order to get in this, you need to claim authorship of your blog. Also, when you do this, your Google plus profile will be connected and your picture will be shown in the search results. Something like this :

    5. Go Social : Social has become very important these days. The more social you are the more favorable the search engines are to you because that is a signal that people actually are consuming and sharing your content because it is good.Glad to see that you have opened a Facebook page that’s a good start but you need to encourage people to share your content while they are on your website. I personally love and use this plugin called Digg Digg. This plug in provides a floating bar next to your content with all the icons. This was made famous by mashable and now you can have it too.     P.S : Get on Twitter ASAP.

    6. Email marketing. You need to get people to sign up to your newsletter. Why? ‘Cause search engines are mental that’s why . They change when they want how they want so you can’t really depend on them for traffic can you? Your ideal traffic distribution should be 40% direct 40 % search traffic and 20% referral traffic. Direct traffic is people who already know about your website and type it in the browser to land on your website and this includes people who click your website from within an email also. 

    So whenever you post a new recipe you can send an email blast tell your subscribers about it. If you don’t want to invest in anything try mail chimp. They let you have 2000 subscribers for free if I am not wrong. Now you need some referral traffic let’s talk about it.

    7. Zemanta : If you need to survive as a blogger for a long term start building relationships with other bloggers. This has become a mandate in some sorts because this helps you build authority to a large extent. Check out this plug in called Editorial Assistant by Zemanta ( You can search for it within WordPress ) 

    What this does is whenever you are writing a blog post/recipe it will suggest you posts from other similar bloggers so that you can link out to them. Wait link out to THEM? Yes, when this happens and you send them an email that you have linked to their post and they will be happy to give you a link back too. So you would have achieved three things with this :

    1. Got yourself a backlink from an authority site. ( For SEO remember ? ) 

    2. Referral traffic for the rest of the other blog’s ( and yours ) lifetime.

    3. More recipes for your readers so that your readers will come back to you again and again and agian.

    Its a win-win-win situation. 🙂 

    8. Analytics : You have all the traffic you want now, what do you do with them? Understand them. they are your readers remember. Google Analytics will help you understand a lot of things about your blog. Where your referral traffic is coming from.     Thanks for your reply and your insights. I have already listed the blog on Indieblogger and the reviewing food i shall look into for sure. The You Tube videos are a great idea too (though my mom-in-law is going to think I have lost it as she already looks at me strangely while I take 10 – 12 photos of everything I cook hahah)

    Yes that’s very true. When you produce great content your efforts on SEO can drastically be reduced. I have seen a lot of instances where people link to great content because it adds so much value to them. 

    You need to produce content that people won’t hesitate to share on social media 🙂
