A Break from Backlight | Introducing Paper Planes

We are passionate about print and mad about mags.

We believe in the power and reach of intelligent and soulful journalism, which inspires and ignites curiosity. Our faith rests in the independent print magazine community, which has come to carve a niche for itself in the world of print publications.  And above all, we believe that the Indian audience is more than ready to appreciate these eclectic indie titles, which are creating waves around the world. Paper Planes proposes to bring these titles to them.

Paper Planes (www.joinpaperplanes.com) is conceived as an online independent print magazine subscription service. The idea is to offer a monthly/periodic subscription package to readers in India – where they get to indicate the genres of their interest (from amongst our Stacks) and we bring them different indie magazine titles (a curated surprise for them!) from around the world, every month based on their selection.

Paper Planes website went live mid November and we shipped out our first set of surprise titles to our subscribers at the end of November; and now we are getting ready to dispatch our December surprise(s) very soon.

OUR NOVEMBER MAGS:

What’s the plan, you ask. And we say –

a) share the excitement of the world of indie magazines (from New York to Kosovo, Berlin to Beirut & the RoW) with readers in India,

b) introduce the audience to the makers and vice-versa.

c)  its not a plan that will save the world – but we hear reading is therapeutic; so we may, in a very small, tiny, nano kind of way actually contribute to the wellness of the world!

Why limit your choice to reading on screen, when we are giving you a perfectly good excuse to curl up in a corner with cup of joe or mulled wine (given the season) and TAKE A BREAK FROM BACKLIGHT?

We are new and excited to be part of the Rodinhood community – we hope to actively contribute as well as benefit from the platform. With this, we welcome ourselves to The Rodinhoods. Cheers!

Additional info added by asha from the comments section:

There are no titles on display that can be bought off the shelf. What you purchase is our service and we curate these indie titles based on subjects of your interest. To break it down:

(a) at the time of filling the subscription form – you indicate your subjects of interest to us by picking any 3 of the 4 stacks (stacks of genres) or a surprise option;

(b) you can subscribe for a fixed period i.e. 9/18 months (pay upfront) or a rolling monthly option (pay as you go)

(c) Its one magazine a month – so based on your stack selection, we bring you one new title a month. The idea is to allow you to discover new titles. So we aim to not repeat a title for at least 12 months.

(d) Our titles are a surprise ! so no way of knowing which titles are coming your way. However, you can see the previous titles dispatched by us on our website (Magazine profile page) – so you get an idea of the kind of titles we send out. Our titles are selected after thorough research – we are readers just like you and we make sure we do not send something that we ourselves find lacklustre.

(e) Our online store is also going live very soon – here you will find collectible books published by indie publishers, other interesting reads and may also find back issues of some of the titles we previously dispatched to our subscribers.

  1. hey nupur,

I LOVE THIS IDEA. my husband and i are mag freaks.

so how does this work? do you have a set list of mags? or do we simply state our interest and you curate the magzines accordingly?

do we get to read the same set of mags every month – or do they keep changing??!

eg. we love travel & living kinda mags. so what would the offerings to us include?

  2. Hi Asha – stoked to hear that you like the idea.

  3. Best of luck! Btw, I’m very keen to know why did you choose this name ‘Paper Planes’, attracted my attention immediately 🙂

  4. Thanks Atamjeet. Alert – long read ahead!

‘paper planes’ is oft used to denote joints/blunts (actually we didn’t know that..looked up urban dictionary and found out) – however – the idea is the same.. i.e.High on Paper…inspirational/curiosity driven high. How your spirit just soars when you see or read about something creative and you just want to carry that energy and do something of your own.  This is the energy and kick the indie magazines have, they are experimental, inspirational, edgy, super creative with how they print on paper and above all super passionate about their subjects.

Planes also suggest travel around the world, which in some way is what these magazines tend to offer – bring you stories from around the world …all in the comfort of the place where you are reading the magazines.

And lastly – on a slightly emotional note – Jet Wings (Jet Airways’s inflight magazine) was the first magazine title I got hooked on and after that I would read almost all inflight magazines while travelling ..this was way, way before I had caught the magazine fever. So in a way magazines have always been a really important part of my flights and the two are strangely related to one another – as in if we were to play a word game and you say plane, the first word that will spring to my mind is inflight magazine!!!

  5. Welcome to The Rodinhoods 🙂 Nupur

Though liked the Idea of Subscribing once with the option to receive a mix of various TITLES from those that you have your associations assigned with and otherwise getting stuck to just the same Title for the Subscribed Magazines for the time period of the subscription and then again subscribe for another one.  this actually has a Freshness to it!

As I understand this is a Marketplace for Magazines, and not so by Selection of the Subscribers but curation and availability of the Magazine Suppliers or Publishers, more of like a Junglee for MAGS than maybe a Flipkart, Snapdeal for the same, and a bit far off from AirBnB for mags again. Works with keywords (being Interests) and the selection o f the final Mags landing to the subscribers is solely done by your team, correct ?

So this is more of a Push Technology in play where you get PREFERENCES AND Push the relevant content to the subscribers, hence the other mags that you have associated with play a part, have you connected with ALL the magazines so as to support the  wide and varied Audience who are ultimately your TG ?

Also since the Subscription would be the only way that would be your Model of earning out of this too, you become like an Affiliate for those Publishers of the respective magazines likewise, do you have a list of curated Publishers in association ? or the Element of the surprise Paper Plane flying into the subscribers Home is the USP here ?

You can also see this as a Coupon distribution system since you would have the database already from your subscribers and their relevant personal interests too, you can maybe also take it to the next step from here and provide the coupons or mechanism for other marketing and promotion avenues that way too, by which you can also support maybe some Food Festivals, BOOK launches, Products, Events etc, etc too within your audience likewise, there are a lot of startups (even here on TRHS) who would be glad to associate and you can also get them the required EARLY Adopters or add to their TG too.

Then again you can go with any of the ways that you and your Subscribers can benefit for a VAS in place where they get SURprised even more with you curating and adding more Value to it not only in terms of their Favourite Magazine but also maybe a Wine tasting, Cup of Joe, a Pizza, an Ice cream, Chocolate, a New Movie Premier, an Invite for a Play, entry to the Entertainment park, Toys for Kids, an Outdoor Activity, Travel, Stay, a  New activity Learning or Hobby Course, a Gym Offer for a month, SAMPLES of new to be launched Products, or a Sneak peek opportunity for some others as well. Many Possibilities yet as you said High on Creativity, Let the Plane take off!!

Good Luck, Keep Flying 🙂  Cheers!!!

  6. Hey Darshan, thanks for the message and for sharing such super ideas.

Re. our selection process – we are totally independent in this respect i.e. there are no arrangements/prior agreements with any publisher at all. We have a fixed schedule of the genres we distribute every month and we decide which title to send under the genre by independent review and its totally our discretion which is guided solely by quality of content. We decide on the go, so that we are able to accommodate new titles in the market as well – so we do not pre-order any titles. We have a large database of magazines which is regularly updated and we hope to bring the best to our subscribers. We are not committed to any single title so it is possible that you may not see a title repeated at all if we can find newer titles under a genre, which we think is worth sharing with our subscribers.

Yes, we would love to support independent and creative ideas through our service and we our currently looking at ways to collaborate. I am going to try and see how I can reach out to fellow Rodinhoods who may be interested in collaborating.

As you correctly pointed out – possibilities are limitless and we are very excited with the prospects. We love what we do and hope to reach out to like-minded people and bring them the best from the world of indie publications.

  7. errr… I’m really confused

this is a print magazine? or a digital one?

Do you have the IP rights for all the content you curate?

How can you commercially manage to print / curate a few magazines?

If this is digital, then what’s wrong with Flipboard?

Ps – Can you set your website to work?

  8. hmmmn ok lets see if this helps:

    1. Paper Planes is not a magazine. It is a service. And one can sign up to our service online.

    2. Service – we curate indie PRINT magazines only i.e we bring indie print magazines from around the world (one new title a month) to our subscribers, based broadly on their interests.

    3. Since we do not reprint any magazine or contents from any magazines – IP rights are not something to worry about.

    4. Our list of titles is not limited and we have no tie ups. Imagine traditional stockists who buy magazines from distributors/publishers and stock in their shops to sell – we have the same model but we are not committed to buying the title again. We reach out to the publishers whose work we wish to introduce to our subscribers and place orders based on the number of subscribers we have.

    5. There is nothing wrong with digital magazines and there is absolutely nothing wrong with Flipboard. Print magazines are an alternative for readers looking for something more tactile to enjoy and treasure. Besides, indies as opposed to their mainstream counterparts boast of original and unbiased content which we believe will appeal to many readers in India.

Ps – Can you set your website to work? – ok now I am confused. Not sure I understand the question.
