Advise on Tribal Handicraft Ecommerce

Dear Rodinhooders,

I have booked a domain this month (www.grameenkart.com) to sell tribal handicraft items online. Products will be sourced predominantly from tribal area.

Idea is to facilitate the tribal for better marketing and price for their product. Also to develop their skill and livelihood.

Need advise from the members on

1. E commerce platform (Currently I am in discussion with 72 Interactive and Martjack), Pls suggest any other name you know.

2. Logistic arrangement is crucial for this business. Considering the sourcing of the products from the remote place, any advise on the logistics.

3. Issues/Challenges faced by the existing players in similar segment.

Thank You and looking forward for you suggestions and advise.

With warm regards,

Eswar

Since you mentioned you are a start-up, I have following suggestions for your:

    • Shipping & Logistics : Keep it yourself so that can carefully pack the products and ensure the product will be protected when it reaches the customer.
    • Check on Inventory : Will you be maintaining a inventory or will it be make to order, if yes what will be your return policy.

Additional Cost that you should consider:

    1. Product Photography : A good product photography is must to sell the product online, ensure you have multiple angle.
    2. Product Write-up & Description : Each product should have complete product description including handling care, material etc
    3. Marketing Cost : Plan your marketing strategy and cost. Building an eCommerce is easier then marketing it. If you don;t market it will the website will die in next 6 months.

  2. One more option is zepo, shopify etc and many more.

    Not much idea on logisitics.

I would appreciate if you can talk about your motivation behind going for a niche website rather than acting as seller on one of the ecommerce websites like FlipKart and Snapdeal. Clearly your strength is not in technology or product which is why you are looking for ecommerce solution. By that I am assuming you will need lot of help for SEO and all other functions like marketing etc.

It is also clear that you think your strength is in sourcing. So why not focus on sourcing only and innovate on that for eg. may be procure for tribal area and repackage as gifting item. Just my thoughts.

  3. Connecting you to Rahul Jain who is doing very well in his venture. Seek his advice.

  4. Hi Eswar,

We r dealing with some handicraft items made by Adivasis in tribal region of Maharashtra.

Most of the items are wooden and we faced no issues in logistic.

I cant comment on ecommerce route but should you need to enlarge ur product folio please let me know.

  5. Hi Eswar,

My personal suggestion would be to go ahead with Zepo. Many Rodinhooders have their stores hosted on Zepo.  Their pricing plans are extremely low starting from just Rs.949/month. They provide complete solutions including payment gateway support and may also help you with tie-ups with logistic operators. They offer a free 14 days trial. You can try them out, check their services and then think of going for a paid subscription if you like them.

If you would like to take a free trial or check out more about them, use this link: Zepo.in

I can help you in connecting with Zepo sales team who would be in a better position to solve your queries and help you out. If interested, send your contact details to my mail address ventures529@gmail.com

All the best for your venture !
