Cashing-in on the doomsday – Please read before you die !!

I just published this on my Finance Blog and thought this post will go waste if it doesn’t come into notice of the Rodinhooders. So I thought it’s worthwhile to share this here.

Have a look around you, the landscape, the creatures around you, all the things whether moving or not, look at them very closely…because this may very well be the last time that you had a look at them. The Mayans thought that our earth has been manufactured with an expiry date and if they are to be believed, it expires this Friday!

Well that’s enough treat for a pessimist. I would like to quote Albus Dumbledore– “Dark times lie ahead of us and we must choose between what is easy and what is right.” Of course it is easy to go with the herd in believing that the world is indeed breathing its last breath, but finance is always about forward looking approach. How would you price a security which has no future cash flows? The world is indeed not ending this Friday. The only thing special about this day is the Solstice.

Finance teaches us, not only to be optimistic, but also to be opportunistic. I have always believed that smartness lies not in thinking ahead, but in acting forward. And there are lots of smart people out there among the 6 billion heads in the world, who have spot a healthy market in these hostile times. In my opinion the whole scenario can make it to the case studies of the finest management institutions around the world.

Party organizers are obviously making big bucks propagating the idea of ‘possibly the last party of our life time’. Nobody actually questioned them regarding their ‘possibly the last chance to make money!’ But as I said, it’s not the last chance. It’s what marketers call a ‘Niche Market’. And guess what, it’s not just these party makers who are milking the judgement day cow, they’ve got company from various field, unthought-of, even in our wildest imaginations.

Few years ago I heard of a storage facility, which preserves grains, fruits, plants, etc for future consumption. But if you think that is normal, there is even more, it also stores genes, organs, and who knows, they might even provide service to store living beings. If you are planning to go on a tour, you surely must be thinking of a luxurious accommodation. Well, if not luxurious, safe would surely do the deal. There are also safety bunkers available to house you and your family safe from tremors, if any. These safety deposits have enough supplies to keep you alive for next one year at least.

The list of businesses related to the end of the world goes on, but have you wondered the state of the economy post the raptures. Though, I completely discard the possibility of the end, the law of probability says that in spite of such a massive destruction, there are surely gonna be some lucky winners of survival, who will again put the system in place. Just try and give it a thought. What about the currency rate, the economic growth, the economic cycles? What will be the status of macro-economic factors like the unemployment and inflation? In fact, there is an even bigger question; will we follow the current system?

The idea of this article is not to stir a sense of fear, but to stir your thinking buds. Money or say wealth is eternal and so is our world. When these things don’t stop, why should our thinking stop? Finance is pure common sense, and the same common sense tells us that it is futile to be thinking about future disasters; in fact we must spend only a fraction of that time and energy in planning about our future finances.
