Do You Have a Marketing Department?

“What kind of question is this?” you may ask.

Okay, let me ask it this way – “Is your marketing department doing all the marketing?”

“What?”

Okay, forget it, just answer these simple questions:

Every time someone uses your product, isn’t it marketing?

Every time you answer a customer’s or a prospect’s phone, isn’t it marketing?

Every time you send an email, isn’t it marketing?

Every time you write on your website, isn’t it marketing?

If you are in the banking business, isn’t keeping the depositors’ deposit safe marketing?

If you are in the restaurant business, isn’t the after-dinner mint marketing?

If you are in the retail business, isn’t your checkout counter marketing?

If you are in the newsletter business, isn’t your newsletter marketing?

If you are in the stock broking business, isn’t your trading platform marketing?

If you are in the real estate business, isn’t your construction marketing?

If you are in the technology business, isn’t your coding marketing?

See, marketing isn’t just a few individual events restricted to a department like structure.

It’s the sum total of everything you do every day.

So, do you have a marketing department?

  1. This is out of Rework – Change the way you work forever by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson. And the About Us thing Never Happened!

  2. Yes, the idea is out of Rework.

Have been fighting some battles on the personal front, so 3-4 ‘About Us’ are still work in progress. But will send them for sure. Thanks!

  3. By the way, I just remembered and re-checked my email. I’d sent you an email on 16th June regarding your ‘About Us’ page. Have resent that email.

But yeah, 3-4 pages are still pending on my front.

  4. Got the resent email. Not the earlier one. The last email we had received from you was on June 9. Thanks for your help. Please take care!
