‘Do your bit’ campaign
‘Smriti’ is a non-profit consortium of philanthropists, environmentalists and social activists who are exploring innovative approaches to tackle complex social and environmental problems. We believe that ‘saving the world’ is not as simple as clicking on the ‘donate’ button on a website.
Money alone cannot prevent the suicide of a farmer, the abuse of an elephant, or rape of a child. Instead it requires a change in value systems, attitudes and lifestyles – the willingness to sacrifice luxury for principle – to share one’s time, energy, intellect, skills and resources for the larger good.
We are currently exploring the possibilities of travel/holiday/entertainment industry in finding sustainable solutions to regional environmental and socio/cultural problems.
We believe that a holiday need not be a selfish act of appeasing your senses. Instead it could be a wonderful opportunity ‘to share’ and ‘give back’ something to the world. It could be the begining of a tremendous healing process.
‘Do your bit’ is a campaign conceived to promote philanthropic and eco-friendly ‘holiday’ /travel experiences. (https://www.traveltocare.in)
Instead of receiving donations, our beneficiaries ( the elephant, the artist, the farmer, potter, child, women, and several others ) would directly be paid by the visitor for their services. This would also bring about positive interactions, attitudinal changes and set ethical trends within the community, especially among children and youth.
Such a system instills the right attitudes within the local community and the traveller/guest.
After all when we “give a man a fish, we feed him for a day; teach a man to fish, we feed him for a lifetime”.
I am curious about your reactions to such a venture and hope that at least some of you would hope to visit and spend time with us this summer. Looking forward to your comments/criticisms/advise.
