During college:
“I just got placed in Accenture.”
“Woohoo..My career starts in Infosys!”
“It took some time, but I will be working for L&T”
After work starts:
“Formals suck”
“I hate traveling so far”
“This is so not what I wanted to do”
Getting a job is one proud moment of your life. The first job acquired in college placements after the entire tiring process can be rewarding. Highly rewarding. You’ll get congrats from smiling and unsmiling faces, pats on your back, maybe even a couple of beers from a good friend. Why, that day could be happiest day of your current life!
And then the first day of your office starts, you go all excited, sign all the papers, feel all professional and feel its time you go make it to the top by kicking some ass. Soon after a few weeks you begin to realise, its not so much ass kicking, but licking that you have to do. You have to keep yourself prim and proper everyday and somehow show up all fresh and wide eyed. And listen (read obey) to people, who you will soon learn to hate from that black pit of darkness in your heart.
So why go around trying to climb an unscalable mountain when you can have a mountain erupt where you stand itself?
You may be a high Grade Point Average student, but that will only get you a job. To go further, what you need is balls. Metaphorically speaking, of course.Take Gaurav Munjal (CEO and Co-founder of Flat.to) for example. A 2.81 CGPA student, with a job at Directi, and he left it all to start his own business. With what? A simple idea of getting flats for students. Having undergone all the rigours of obtaining a flat in his own college days, this young marvel decided to make money by helping his fellow students. And he did just that. And he failed. But that didn’t stop him, he just kept on going. Equipped with a few friends, a laptop with internet connection, and social websites, he created a Flat.to from ground up and is now running an office with a big like minded team of individuals.
Giving a lecture in his alma matter recently, he made a slide show that was featured on SlideShare, and got a few gears in the young minds turning. Not getting a job after your college days is not the end of the world. Instead, it can be the start of a new one, a more exciting and challenging one. It all depends on YOU!
