Hi all,
While this post may not be completely in line with things that we generally discuss here, thought should still put this up. This post is about the finding of an online survey done recently. All the respondents were urban, educated and contributing members of the society, just like you and myself.
The results are interesting and can be seen in the context of the recent developments in news. Please excuse me in case you find the examples insensitive, the intention here is only to understand the general public behavior and find answers.
The situation:
Imagine you are the part of a community of very well organised and evolved dogs. In your community, eating Butterflies (which are sacred to your community) is prohibited and those found guilty are shunned. You on the other hand, really like eating the Butterflies. A mere sight of a Butterfly makes you lose control.
One day, while strolling in the community park, you saw it (the Butterfly, yes). What would you do in the following situations?
- Situation 1: There are elders there, taking a walk with you.
Would you pounce on the Butterfly and eat it? Yes/No?
- Situation 2: There are small puppies playing around.
Would you pounce on the Butterfly and eat it? Yes/No?
- Situation 3: It is dark at night; you’re with friends who like Butterflies too.
Would you pounce on the Butterfly and eat it? Yes/No?
- Situation 4: It is dark at night. You are alone.
Would you pounce on the Butterfly and eat it? Yes/No?
- Situation 5: It is dark at night. You are alone. The night guards might do a round anytime.
Would you pounce on the Butterfly and eat it? Yes/No?
=====================================================
Here are a few statistics for you to munch on:
- 5% of the respondents said yes to situation 5
- 45% of the respondents said yes to situation 4
- 90% of the respondents said yes to situation 3.
- 95% of the respondents who said yes to situation 3 did not change their answer when told that the laws are changed and the punishment now is even more severe.
- 100% of the respondents who said yes to situation 3 changed their answer when told that the conviction rate for this crime was 100% in the community.
If you are the PM of India who is presented with these findings…what are the steps you would take to ensure that the ‘Butterflies’ in your country stay protected?
