Gyan Manch – Entrepreneurship for Underprivileged

Hello All,

I am working on an idea to instil entrepreneurial foundations in underprivileged children. I am a Teach for India fellow and I, with two other fellows, am opening a Learning Lab in the Jhilmil Colony Community of East Delhi.

The idea is to bring the students from low-fees and government schools at par with their peers from middle and high income communities in extra-curricular activities. Our prime focus is on technology education and entrepreneurship.  By the end of the year, we want to see kids publishing and selling their own newsletters, writing codes and making working models of science based topics.

The lab would be quite resource intensive as we need basic furniture, computers and some scientific equipments, et al. We have taken a room in the neighbourhood and are paying INR 4,500. We plan to charge a token money of INR 50- 100 per month from the students to keep the place running. However, this is not a selection criteria for students as some of them might find it difficult to pay this as well. It will cost us INR 300 per month per child to keep the centre running.

If you wish to help in building the foundations of this lab, you can help out by –

 1) Donating In-Kind: This is an exhaustive list of items that are needed to start the lab with a finance tracker to keep accountability of the donations.

 2) Volunteer/ Intern: You can directly get involved in the learning of the students by sharing your skills. You can do weekend workshops with the kids or spend time with them in the evening.

 3) Cash Donation: Visit the Give India portal and at least try to sponsor a child.
