We are having a major issue with our VolksWagen Vento Automatic car. Would any of you Rodinhooders be able to help us connect with someone who could solve our problem?
Purchased: April 2013
Delivered: May 2013
Gear Box Failure: 12th July 2013 (2 Months from Delivery of Car)
Delivery Location: Mumbai, India
Current Status: Car is still in VW Workshop (Shaman Cars, Lalbaug, Mumbai) (Been exactly two weeks now)
On June 12th at 11:10 am while I was driving at worli the car suddenly lost power and stalled in the middle of the road. I tried to put it in D and R both but it refused to move. We tried to put off the engine and restart but the car would not move.
We called VW helpline and spoke to Ms Sonam at around 11:15 and she took down our exact location and said help will come in about half an hour. We kept calling her every half hour and she gave us the contact of the towing person who also kept telling us that the towing van would reach us in half an hour. This went on until 6:20 pm and finally the car was taken to the work shop of Shaman Cars. We have a record of all the calls made during the entire day and can give it to you for your reference.
We called Shaman Cars on 12th July and they said they will inspect the car and let us know what the problem is and how long it will take to rectify.
On 15th July Mr. Manoj from Shaman Cars said they were still trying to figure out the problem. We then personally visited Shaman cars and found our car parked with the front fender hitting a pillar at their work shop. We took a picture:
When we asked Mr. Manoj why my car was parked like this he said the bumper has a cushioning effect and no harm would come to my car. I did not like my car being treated like this but kept quiet. Mr. Manoj then asked us to wait in the waiting room for some time while he put our car on a lift. He then asked us to come to our car and showed us a small scratch under the car and said this is the gear box and it has taken a hit and therefore the gear box seems to have packed up. He said he will still check and let us know. I told him this was not possible and the scratch which he was showing us looked dubious. The car was travelling on a good road at worli and nothing had hit the car from under.
After waiting for two more days we again called Mr. Manoj and he said they were not able to find the fault. We have been calling every day and are not able to believe that VW is not able to find a fault with the car for more than 10 days. During these days when ever I spoke to Mr. Manoj told me that he has changed the cover of the gear box and is still able to understand the problem. He agreed that the hit has nothing with the problem in the gear box.
On 23rd July Mr. Manoj called and said we need to put a new gear box which is not under Guarantee and we shall have to take a claim from the insurance company. I dont understand Why would the insurance company pass a claim for a problem that has nothing to do with the scratch that Shaman cars is talking about. I will also loose my No Claim Bonus on my policy.
On 23 July Mr. Manoj and Mr Ameet both spoke to me and said that I should visit them on 24th to resolve this problem. On 24th morning Mr. Manoj sent me an sms saying that there was flooding around the garage and we should meet on the 25th. Yesterday when I again called Mr. Manoj he said he will call and let me know when I should go to them. I am not sure what is it that they want to discuss with me. I leave it to your judgment what they want to discuss with me. I am still waiting for their call.
I have a printing press and we have German machines which are built like tanks and made to last for decades. I cant believe VW makes such delicate cars that a small scratch can pack up the gear box.
We would ideally prefer a total refund / New car (replacement with new car) as we have lost total confidennce in this car … who knows what problem will we face even if this issue does get resolved after so many failed conversations with WorkShop and attempts to get in touch with VW Company
Does anyone know anyone who can help us with the above matter? Would greatly appreciate the same.

UPDATE JULY 31, 2013 10.30AM
We have received a final reply from the VW team (Shaman Cars, Lalbaug) where they have clearly stated that now they will not do anything and we have to speak to the insurance company.
They have clearly washed their hands off this situation and we have to do something about this as this is cheating. Scratch cannot be “external impact/damage”.

Puneet – send this to VW Germany and tell them that they should sell these Bumpers in India with the slogan “Bang As you please… Aage waali ki Gaddi ka tel niklega” (bang the car – the other guys oil will come out)
VW will do more business selling these MAGIC bumpers than selling cars!!

Clearly they have dug their own grave… They agree that the gearbox is damaged due to impact and you have a photograph of the impact within their own facility… I feel you should just go legal on this one….

Thank you for the contacts. I shall get in touch.

Hi Puneet,
I got a problem with my 3 months old VW Jetta and the clutch got burnt and flywheel damaged. VW service centre said it is driver fault due to holding the clutch often. But I persisted and got professional opinion from another VW service center in my city to see if there is any such possibility because the vehicle is a new one. I saw a similar case reported at team-bhp.com and referred to it. I also met with their senior manager and discussed the case with them. They took it up with VW and finally, replaced flywheel under warranty and I replaced clutch by cash.
So, it is better to get professional opinion from someone and then present the case to the senior manager in your city.

We seem to be facing a similar issue for our VW Passat which is serviced by Shaman Cars, Lalbaug.
Our Passat is old but everytime we service it, it fails and needs to be serviced again, in like 2 months.
Sometimes I feel, we are paying more for servicing our car rather than buying a new one!!
Puneet Rawat
Got the details. Again, without a strong reference to these contacts, I am just another customer complaining. Regardless, I shall contact them and make all efforts to get my message through.
Thank you very much for your help
Puneet Rawat
It would be great to know how many others are facing similar issues with Shaman Cars.

Try going on to https://www.team-bhp.com/ – thats the largest forum for Car buyers/users/enthusiasts
Also, talking to marketing guys will not help as it does not fall in their ambit. Try reaching their India CEO and the Global Services Head. They will be the ones who will help you. I have seen with other organizations that those guys care more about the brand then the Indian guys do.
Also, try connecting with them on Social Media and create this issue there too. I recently had success when I had a problem with Tata Teleservices and friends weighed in with suggestions and I could find a resolution to the problem.

No Puneet – we complained about some service issues on our Passat and it got sorted out. Also unlike the dealers these guys are really concerned about the branding and reputation of their cars. I suggest do try please at least the customer care person.

Thank you for your revert. I shall definitely get in touch with the information shared. Appreciate it

The Volkswagen guys have been calling me every week to buy a car. I told them I love the car but heard their after sales is terrible. Your story strengthens the problem.
However, the folks in Thane insist they are different – because they do Supply Chain management (of spares) better and invest in after-sales better than Mumbai.
Please call them. I will mail you his number, and let me know what happens.

Anyone has friends in VolksWagen BKC Mumbai office?
Would like to speak with someone on Phone and understand the different hierarchies in this company

Puneet, contact directly VW international senior management. Remind them of the brand getting diluted due to this kind of behaviour from the Indian counterpart. If they do not reply in a week’s time, send an email with a threat to file a case in Indian consumer court etc.

Sudden & unexplained loss of thrust/power/speed has been a problem in Australia. Apparently, some such cases have also happened worldwide on different VW car models worldwide. In the case of the fatal accident case in Australia, VW agreed finally to recall cars – after an initial silence from them and after a big hue & outcry in the media (see just some of the news articles linked below in chronological order). The first link below mentions that VW Japan has already recalled 91000 cars due to this ‘sudden loss of power’ issue.

To All Rodinhooders,
We appreciate all your time and efforts that you have put in our case. We thank you for this. It has been good to know people like you who care
We are still in conversation with Shaman cars and are trying to work our a positive outcome. We wrote to VW Germany, Delhi, Mumbai and a few social media forums. We were directed by VW Germany to VW Delhi and then to Shaman cars Mumbai. Obviously Shaman cars are not going to agree that there is a flaw in the vehicle and antagonise VW. And VW gets good business from Shaman cars so they will not spoil business opportunity for Shaman. We spoke to the print media and they understand our point but are afraid of loosing revenue from advertisements from VW.
So now we have reluctantly agreed to go for an insurance claim.
Today Shaman cars have told us that they have changed some parts in the gear box but there is a humming sound and therefore have asked VW engineer to come and advise further action. TODAY, it is one month since my car went to Shaman cars.
My view is that with condition of the roads here in Mumbai every car will have many such scratches. So this scratch that they show cannot be the reason for the gear box to pack up.
Unfortunately the law is not taken seriously in this country and I guess if I were to take them to court it will only add to my agony.
Anirudh B Balotiaa
I am surprised with the apparent nexus between Shaman and VW and then the print media not willing to take on this to fear loss of VW advertisements…seriously is this even true??
Whats there to fear about, there is a genuine issue by a VW customer and the blame is on the Dealer and not necessarily on the VW brand.
Don’t know, but these doesn’t bode well, Shaman will continue to operate in this fashion and customers will continue to suffer.
Jenifer
Hi Puneet
I had given you the contacts for VW top-brass in India. However you were reluctant to follow up with them.
I write to you to let you know that the issue with our car is now sorted out. The reason I am writing this is so that you know that you need to take the initiative. If you create enough noise, you will get someone’s attention. We had given our Passat for servicing to Tornado Motors (under extended warranty scheme on completion of 1 year). When we received it back the hub caps were missing and there were (plenty of) cement stains on the whole car. We took this up with Tornado who refused to entertain us. Then after connecting with assorted VW & TM guys we connected directly with the MD – passenger cars. He guided us to Head Customer Service. Ofcourse we insisted that he refer us to the latter rather than us calling directly. We received a call back from head – CS but then things went in a limbo as TM refused to do the job. We followed continuously with the MD & CS person. After several threats to go to the media and create a chaos at each of their outlets ..VW made TM do the job.
Finally our car was received last week with an intact paint job and hub caps restored. Its a minor victory but just wanted to share so that you do not give up the fight .
Alok Rodinhood Kejriwal
what happened to this finally?
Prashant Chanchal
Been following the post for past one month – it’s terrible to know it’s still stalling!
Jenifer posted an inspiration (couple of posts above mine), looks like Puneet will have to play a role here, maybe we’re looking for a messiah 😀 Apparently in India, we need to make our own noises and shouts to get heard. How depressing a case of this lack of spirit is shown by VW and not a word is heard anywhere.
Just on a different note – I had once worked out (only ideation) a web-portal solution long back in Jan this year to enable crowd-sourced crime reporting where the platform would bring on table top brasses, decision-makers and top-cops in the system. So the system would work something like this: the portal ropes in all such top influencers and decision-makers officially on-board, when a crime event happens, its covered by general public (clicked, shot, whatever) and quickly shared with the portal community – the admins get involved and alert relevant officials almost immediately who then take actions ordering their juniors. But of course this is easy said than done.
The day I read this post first, I got enthusiastic, recollected everything about the portal stuff, spent 2 hours writing a long post in hope of generating some word of awareness about the above-mentioned proposal that all us rodinhooders could co-create. But unfortunately I got involved in some hectic schedules and forgot about all this. Don’t know if we can ever build such a system.
I’ve always wondered what will happen if all 5800 odd rodinhooders (doers) get involved in some project together, the outcome is bound to be a beauty – if not a commercial solution, maybe it can well be a socially relevant one for sure – and I feel one such effort is due!
Really wish some magic happens for Puneet here. ATB mate!
Prashant
Kaizad Patel
Hi Puneet,
My brother has a similar situation as yours with the same VW dealership. In the end what was it that made them sort out your situation?
please advise if you can on what approach to take to get things sorted with this dealership!
Regards,
Kaiz
Puneet Rawat
Dear Kaizad,
We tried and tried and tried but in vain.
The Volkswagen company asked us to claim insurance for accidental Damage and the insurance company (Volkswagen Inhouse) asked us to claim damages from Volkswagen company (Mechanical Failure). We were sandwiched.
The newspapers including Times of India, Hindustan Times did not give any importance to our case as They were getting Huge Ad Revenue from them at the time.
Our car was in their Garage for a month and ultimately we had to pay the full price to get our car fixed. Reason being, the more we delayed the case, the longer our car would have been sitting in their garage. Who knows which part would have got spoilt in this process and which other repair damages we would have had to incur
I would suggest, only pursue this matter with the Volkswagen company Either you have very influential contacts OR you have the spare time on your hands to wait and chance winning the case in your favor.
We had a bad experience but that doesn’t mean everyone will share the same.
Hopefully, things work out for you.
Wish you all the best.
Amit Shroff
Hi Puneet,
I always prefer to buy products of a brands which have excellent service and customer comes first. It is disappointing to see brands like VW treat their customers like this. They should learn some lesson from companies like Maruti Suzuki, where each customer is treated like King.
In order to get your issue resolved, i suggest you approach higher authority. I have following suggestions to help you with this problem:
Connect with these people on Linkedin and try asking him to connect you with concern person. While sending them a contact request, briefly tell them your problem.
