First of all kudos to all of you and my special thanks to Mr.Alok for this initiative, although this is my first post I keep a follow up on all the activities and discussions happening on Rodinhood.
After listening and getting shared by so many innumerable journeys of members over here..
I am taking a plunge to start a E-Store of mine.
Let me introduce myself..I am Ashish Baharani an alumnus of 2010 batch of MBA…From the first day itself enrolling into MBA I made up my mind of starting something of my own..So as the blessings of friends and family..I started my own retail store in 2010 of Tees in the most reputed mall..Initially I was retailing only Tantra tees (A bombay brand) as an EBO and lately added more brands of tees in store which got a tremendous response..Right now most of our customers are either NRI’s or People based in other cities but belonging to hometown..
Now I am looking forward to start my E store as I am already having the stocks and all the other requirements (VAT,Tin No.etc) which are needed ready..I really want to build a website of repute to cater the younger audience as our major clientele is of that age group..
How can I go about it ?? I have seen many E stores starting and closing up soon as sales dint pick up much…??Where should be my main focus??Initially I want a trial run before spending much on the webstore as to test run the response..??
Thank you..
You guys are really doing a good job….”RESPECT” is the right word..

Dear Ashish
Good to know about you, and well let me Help you
1) for trial run, you can have seller account with ebay, jabong, myntra, yebhi and other popular indian e commerce sites, so once you get agreement copy, check few things 1) make sure that you are not paying for listing your product ( ebay costs less than 10/- for listing product ) so check in agreement copy that for FREE in listing the products 2) Commission Structure, E Commerce companies add commission structure for each and every successful product sale, and each e commerce company will have its own commission structure. so before listing the product work on commission structure and put the best costs so that people can start buying. 3) logistics part, make sure that you get good costs from DTDC, Bluedart to deliver to any place with in INDIA. and also you have to check if e commerce company wants to arrange pickup how much they are charging or if you want to deliver the product to end customer how much it costs for you. so work on the logistics charges and select the best option.
2) as you always knows images are the only option to attract the customers, post good images with good resolution and also necessary product description along with your email ID, where people can have email conversation with you regarding your products
3) its regular exercise to check each and every website to make sure that what ever the products you sell today only those products need to be displayed, remember customer can buy your product at any time, and once you know that specific product is not available it really gives bad impression on your store. so its regular exercise task
Thats it simple, so once people start buying your products, you will be getting your final amount ( MRP – e commerce commission ) to your bank account, make sure that you provide exact details like, order handling time, order dispatch time, provide the tracking numbers etc etc
Hope this helps you, let me know your feedback
Thanks

Hey Ashish,
To setup the store, you need 3 things – domain & hosting (http://www.something.com), the ecommerce website software ( u can take Zepo, Smartstore, buildabazaar, magento, etc), a payment gateway (ccavenue, payU, ebs, zaakpay, etc)
You also need a courier company to do your shipments and a packaging provider to buy boxes / envelopes / packets from to make sure your goods dont get spoilt on their way. REMEMBER to add these costs while planning a store, these can get pretty high.
For my e store http://www.travellerkids.com (which sells innovative educational games for kids), we use Zepo with PayU. The whole setup cost us Rs. 20,000 to setup and it requires no technical knowhow or maintenance.
The bigger thing to worry about selling online is – How to get people to your store? Just like going to a big mall made sure you had existing mall walk-in customers, on the internet you have to attract them to your store. You can do this by facebook, google ads, through friends and family, coupons, etc. Think about this aspect as you have to first attract people onto your website and then only some of them will end up buying a product.
Hope this helps you and others who are planning of doing this.
Cheers

The ecom market has already passed the peak point. From my talks with investors, getting funding could be a problem. It is extremely difficult to survive unless you’re selling something niche, eg. – Cutom message printed tees or something. Make sure you will be able to compete with Cash-On-delivery, 30-day-returns, etc. and all the other goodies offered by the big players. In my opinion, starting with serving a single local area/city-wide is a better idea. That way, you develop a small but good loyalty base, don’t have to compete with everyone and don’t have to spend on pan-India marketing effort. In fact I believe that is the only way anyone can enter ecom rit now.

There are websites which provide ecommerce platforms so you just focus on selling and marketing portion of it. There is Shopify and also an Indian player in this market, 39shops. Both are pretty awesome and lets you do a month’s free trial. You just have to focus on getting products delivered and marketing your site. For any more details, contact me on my twitter. All the best!

Hi everyone,Thanks for the replies…The problem which lies with me is I am going to sell products which provide me a rough margin of 30-40%..Now coming to the Gateway charges 3%,Shipping charges 10%,Hosting and other charges-5%,Adwords without which I dont think we’ll be able to attract customers to the site will be 10&…That lands me with 5% of profit from the total sales..Can you advice me how to become successful by reducing the cost…???
Thanks
Sai Rodinhood Pothuri
Dear Ashish
Ok let me clarify you step by step
1) Go ahead and get account with professional couriers – these people charge less than DTDC and got national coverage . or if you want to have complete track details get price quote from your area DTDC person .
2) If you start selling your products through myntra, yebhi, ebay all these portals charge standard commission rate which includes the payment gateway charges, hosting etc etc
3) So suppose if you are selling 100/- product and you might get 40/- as margin. so simple put 150 as the product cost where for e commerce they might take 30/- as commission that comes at 120/- 20/- for logistics and you will be getting your 100/- diverted to bank account
It might take some time for you to understand but for learning sake start selling your products through ebay and other online platforms , it really works, even it helps you to work on costing structure and other details relating to
Thanks

Hey Ashish, Congrats and best of luck with your venture!
Have you purchased a domain name relevant to your business yet OR are you planning to use the name of your business as your domain name? If you have a name in mind, and it is registered – care to share ?
Like some of the other comments here, definitely wanna hit that niche. Sure you want to sell on ebay, amazon and other sites as they work efficiently, but what you REALLY want to do is build ‘brand equity’ and so before you start your ventures creating accounts and selling online, you need to come up with a name for your business, something that you want to keep consistent across all these alternate platforms ie: twitter, path, fb pinterest, ebay, jabong, whatever… keeping a consistent username pertinent to your business builds authority and helps with the trust factor. I use https://namechk.com/ for checking if the username is available across all social networks.
In a separate post, you mention your problems:
The problem which lies with me is I am going to sell products which provide me a rough margin of 30-40%..Now coming to the Gateway charges 3%,Shipping charges 10%,Hosting and other charges-5%,Adwords without which I dont think we’ll be able to attract customers to the site will be 10&…That lands me with 5% of profit from the total sales..Can you advice me how to become successful by reducing the cost…???
Not making money or breaking even is DEFINITELY A PROBLEM ! So lets help solve what we can, after all that’s what we’re here for!
Gateway charges 3% <– can’t get around the cc companies that you have to pay but now that we know that, adjust it in the cost of your product.
Shipping charges 10% <– i know companies in the US that made a living just off shipping charges – giving their product away for free! Sure alot of them offer ‘free shipping’ and you can too – just include it in the price of your product.
Hosting and other charges-5% <– i will be willing to host the site for you to help you get off the ground. Servers are in US, if that works for you.
Adwords 10% <– instead of spending on adwords, spend on seo – optimize your own site so that when users are searching for certain keywords, your site shows up in the natural listings. Not sure how techie you are, but maybe invest in an SEO guy instead of adwords. I don’t even see ads when searching… its like the right side of the page is invisible to me! Also instead of spending money, spend time to engage with other users in forums and other circles pertinent to your business.
An idea…How about just offering one tshirt a week on your website at an amazing price – kind of like a groupon for tshirts.
On a similar note, not sure where you are based, but I recently came across https://www.chandnichowknowonline.in which launched last week.
A directory of all major stores in CHANDNI CHOWK along with contact information and websites! Its a Google initiative that provides over 2500 SMB’S domain names with the .in extension, along with a basic informational website. Here is there apparel and clothing category:

Hi Shitij,Thanks for the info..I am in talks with Zepo as how can I start with..Just a small question for you…Can you tell me how many hits do you get ?? How much spending on adwords etc ??
Ashish Baharani
U r very much right swapnil..Just like some grocery selling sites in bangalore are targeting only a small area where they can cater with their own delivery boys…Good point..

Hi Indy..thanks for the amazing reply…
I’m on the verge of finalising a name to go through …for the website as well as for fb,twitter handle etc..
Can you help me on how to go through getting a website done and other hosting procedures (I think u r d ri8 guy to ask )Like the steps..Buying the domain name from bigdaddy and hosting on a server and affiliating with CCAvenue…
Thanks for your precious time in replying..
Ashish Baharani
Thank you so much sir will be in touch with you for any sort of help required…
Indy Singh
Hey Ashish,
Once you have the name finalized, would recommend going with godaddy if it is a .com (make sure to search for coupon codes prior to registering – some will bring your domain cost for the first year down to 2-3 bucks). If you are planning to go with the .in extension, there are other registrars that offer better pricing for that ccTLD.
After you have purchased your domain name, get in touch and will setup the hosting account for you.
You will need to spend some money on a web designer to design your website – do you have someone in mind?
The payment gateway will be incorporated into the design of the website itself. I know with Paypal there are no fees associated with setting up this payment gateway – not sure if ccavenue or other Indian payment gateways charge for that.
Best of Luck and look forward to hearing from you soon!
Sachin Vashishtha
Dear Ashish, I believe that your initial question about getting a estore developed is already addressed by many fellow members. You can either go the shared platform way (zeppo, eshopbox, martjack and likes) or you can hire an agency and get it developed. Developing an E-store is not an issue at all. Your second concern is about the traffic/hits. Again it is not a big concern, if you have good designs and are indulged in small marketing activities (SEO/SMM etc.), eventually you will get good traffic. There is a much bigger issue here which needs to be addressed before you start your operations. In one of the comments you mentioned that you only have 30-40% margins. Is it the gross margin you were talking about? If yes, dont start your online operations until you find a solution for the cost cutting. Otherwise you will bleed, and would bleed badly. There are a few things which you can do to keep the cost minimum. If you are selling to a niche, do not offer COD. Start within your city only to get an idea on the demand. Once you have the demand estimates and if the numbers look promising, get out from the city trader mode and head to Tirupur to get good prices. Forget about ecom development or getting the traffic, first get your operations in place, that’s the key brother.
Cheers & all the best!
Hope I helped a bit.. 🙂
Akash Sachdev
Hi Ashish ,
Welcome aboard, As a person who never sold a thing before starting to sell online and doing it since past 18 months ( www,theskinmantra.com ) , I feel an obligation to tell you what lies ahead . In the points mentioned you will probably find some answers. Be prepared for a rough ride.
In your case , Tshirts being your main product , its going to be really difficult to get visibility from get go . You must have already done your home work , but just doing basic search with 5 keywords will tell you, how clogged the online space is
I am all for your own site and brand etc, but ebay is a great way to test waters without getting your fingers burnt.
I suggest you start with Ebay as they have a very professional and standard model . The great thing with ebay is that you can start it today without having to worry about Adwords , Marketing , Domain , Payment Setup . 2 things decide if you sell well on ebay 1) Price 2) Authentic Feedback by the customers. In an ideal world , these are the only things should matter anyway. So you are at least working on things that are somehow in your control. I have no experience with other aggregation sites such as shopclues , tradus. etc. We have been approached many times but their setup did not convince us of seamless transactions. May be Im wrong or short of experience or both.
we have a maim site which is where most of the business is done , but we continue to sell on ebay till date ,as it gives us flexibility
once you are able to automate order fulfillment , logistics, you can then spread your wingspan to have a online store,
An online store is simply much more than getting started and its becoming difficult with big guns including all possible verticals in their inventory. On my finger tips these are the companies that sell Tshirts Yebhi, Inkfruit, Flipkart, Zovi,Tantra, tshirts.in, tradus, pepperfry , jabong . So you have to find the answer to ” , Where am I positioned in terms of customer preference?”
Even If you have unbeatable product range, getting noticed and landing the customer is going to an uphill task.
There is some more information I can provide wrt Couriers, Payment Gateway and Adwords etc. If you can mention specifically what stage are you on after posting the initial question.
Do keep everyone posted with your progress and share your experience so that others may also benefit from your learning.
PS: Negotiate with everyone , literally everyone , no matter how big they seem.( your suppliers , courier companies , gateways, packaging providers etc etc ) .
Cheers,
Akash
Ashish Baharani
Hi akash,Thanks a lot for your lovely comment..I am really delighted to hear the first hand account from you…Just a couple of questions arising in my mind…
A) Is Ebay really good for testing waters…i.e,do Indian customers buy from there as I haven’t bought anything from there yet…??
B) You are absolutely right about the thing that internet is full of tee sellers and fighting with these big guys will only make me bleed..So I am thinking to provide something which is not available over there,a USP so that people feel like visiting to my portal..
C) I am also thinking to change my product line and start a estore of something which is not there yet..and people are looking for it…Hopefully I find it soon…
D)Lastly I also believe that a lot depends upon the name of the site you keep..Flipkart is not associated with books anyway…as the case goes with Jabong,Inkfruit,Tantra etc…So once you hit the right chord with the buyers…U r done with it… !!
Thanx again buddy
Ashish Baharani
Sachin,,,Bang on target boss….U have just put the right question infront of me…I am facing the same thing…There is no problem of getting a vendor to start with the site..and u can switch it later as well…But the main problem lies with the margins and the redundancy of the article (in my case Tshirts) which are already everywhere on the internet platform…
I am trying my level best to find something through which I can have an edge over others…or adding some addons which makes me a level higher…
Akash Sachdev
Hey Ashish,
Nice to see you have some clarity after getting a few answers here…
A ) Ebay has recorded the max gross revenue yoy for any b2c transaction site since last 5 years ( not counting homeshop18 as they have TV channel as a POS ). So dont wrry about numbers.
https://www.quora.com/What-is-an-estimate-for-revenues-gross-or-net-and-the-number-of-transactions-per-day-on-popular-e-commerce-sites-in-India-Flipkart-Naaptol-etc
b) I would suggest not fall into this kind of thinking trap where you get used to being extremely safe. Go with Tshirts as of now ….do not worry too much about profits , but have a stoploss . may be 20-30k , before you revise the strategy .If not anything , this is the best prep course for launching a big product, later on. You will be xposed to Logitics, Online accounting, Ecommerce ecosystem , How to rank high on ebay. What other are selling which you never knew, Theres a world to be explored.
c) As mentioned in the earlier point, waiting for a big product idea is a trap. I will tell you 2 scenarios with new products 1) You discover a product which people want , but no one is selling it online. this is almost impossible and every start up guys wet dream , if it does happen, chances are that a big etailer shark will launch it before you design your prototype.
Since the time I started, I have worked on atleast 4-5 products and by the time I perfected those things to be able to sell, 3-4 players with funded money already launched similar product. ( one actually took the idea from us , but executed real fast, tough luck for us , but its business )
2) You find a product which does have a potential to be big , no body is selling it and people need to be educated about it, once they know it exists, people readily buy it. ( eg laptop skins , still many people dont know it exists , but when they see it, they almost are convinced of having one) .
Here is the problem with such products, educating your audience about the product , which is basically marketing , and it can overshadow all your budget allocations and still may not produce the desired result. Hence I say , sell a product which people know about , have a differentiating element , may be quick service, customization , personalization , local service and master execution of all aspects and then replicate to other products.
d) I dint not get your question , but all the major startups ( self funded ) first executed their core product before moving to bigger things. Flipkart – Books ,Inkfruit – Tshirts , Myntra – Personalization, tantra – Tshirts. So there you have your answers.
Continue to post your progress and do let us know for further help.

Hey Ashish,
I dont know if this option is available online, but I saw a post here on rodinhoods where the guy (sorry dont remember the name) makes posters with your picture in it. you give a sentence and with your pic there will be a good poster made out of it. If you can get that option and get it printed on a tshirt and then sell that online it would be cool something unique.
Ashish Baharani
Khushal…Superb Idea…I am already doing it am store..Customisation on tees (only white) are in production by our own vendor..I have decided to add a page for getting your own thing done on the tee…Thanx a ton for your advice.
Khushal Kapoor
good to hear that. integrate it on your site. make it interactive, give options( design, colour, etc). basically if i come on the site, i should be able to get a particular sentence, in a font, colour, pic, design and size of my own choice delivered at my doorstep. Wish you all the best and more importantly – send me one as a sample.

Ashish, there are a few people offering hosted ecommerce in India. Don’t invest in your own ecommerce platform (say like self hosted magento) till you iron out the kinks and understand it. The question is not if it is viable, but how to make it viable with as little cost as possible.

Are you the right person for the purpose?

Hey Indy,
A wonderful insight into all the problems listed above.
Can you help me with a word or two.
We’re a successful offline B2B business firm with penetration in very few Indian cities. I plan to set up an online B2B portal just that in lines of say indiamart.com, or rather alibaba.com does but just for the clothing sector and that too targeting specifically a particular cloth segment.
I have already bought the hosting from godaddy.com and set up the e-mail accounts running via google apps.
But now I’m feeling a little whimsy about the fact that it will be difficult to stand up against such big companies having very specific point of delivery for particular products. So I need to built up something really wonderful on net to drive the initial lot of traffic to my web site.
I am not that a computer wizzy but I do understand some basic computer lingo. I need to offshore my web building/ development work can you suggest me the correct path for this. i.e the best in line developes and marketers.

Hi Ashish,
i guess you need the following:
1. lots of patience.. something like no sales for weeks or months
2. lots of money. you would still need to run ur family
3. alternate source of income. refer 2 above
4. Good knowledge of online markets…. whats selling, what prices, hows the competition
5. VVV good knowledge of sourcing. if you cant get cheap, you can sell cheap. and then you wont sell!!!
6. Its a v v hard business i must share and admit. what you would do well is to first check out other sites, not the flipkarts or snapdeals but much smaller ones, which would still be much bigger than yours and see where they are going…
best wishes…

do u have his mobile number by any chancea and if its ok to have it over email?
Ashish Baharani
Hi Sanchita,
Thanks for the reply..You are bang on target on many aspects which you mentioned..
I know one thing for sure and that is E-Commerce is the future it takes sometime to get the orders pouring but once you figure it out you can just have it all by itself..
Cheap sourcing is what I am looking around as well but the quantities what the manufacturers mention puts me into thinking..
I am already running 2 stores from last 2 years so One thing I know for sure that the rentals kill most of the margins in a typical brick and mortar business..
Many of our customers are based outside Lucknow and abroad as well and they recommend us many times to start a online thing so they can buy from comfort of their home as well..
Hope to solve this trivia soon !!
Indy Singh
Hey Pawan,
Dont feel whimsical about the venture and Id say go for it. The last thing you want is to second guess yourself and have that ‘what if’ question glooming over you. It seems that you have put some thought into the project, as you have some first steps hammered out..
Your comment partially nailed it ‘So I need to built up something really wonderful on net to drive the initial lot of traffic to my web site.’
You definitely need to build up something really wonderful on the net if you are venturing from offline to online…. but you do not necessarily need to to drive lots of traffic. Focus on the quality over quantity especially when your site is selling a product or service. With all the wonderful online tools at your disposal today, which were not available a few years ago, take full advantage of them and go for your dream!
Be social, Build your brand, Engage your visitors – the rest will all fall into place!
I see you may have already purchased the hosting package from GD. Not sure if that includes your full Cpanel access, but if that is what you’re looking for would be glad to help a fellow hooder out!

Dear Ashish,
In my opinion you should launch an online store only if you wish to evolve as a brand in the future. Choosing any established platform like ebay, tradus etc. may bring you business but customers wont even care as to who delivers the product and you may not be able to engage these new customers.
However, patience (not necessarily money) is what you would need to go through with it. Regarding money, you can easily keep the costs low. Choose any open source platform like Magento CE(free) a good hosting(still very cheap) and a simple one or two word domain. This way you can promote your brand at your own pace.
Regarding development you can proceed in increments. I am a web developer and you can contact me at http://www.webdesigndeveloplearn.com.

Hello Sai,
I want to setup my own ecommerce retail portal. Is it required to apply for TIN No. and other requirement related to billing before opening online portal.?
Sai Rodinhood Pothuri
Hi Tanay Neema
First of all you consult your CA, who can guide you, because when you are selling some thing on your portal means, you have to pay tax to the government. and it depends on the category of ecommerce, its like only dress or books or e commerce portal like flipkart where you can sell any thing.. so depending upon the item you sell, you have to pay different tax to the gov according to the item.
So better sit with CA and discuss in full detail. It will help you alot

Hi,
was wondering if you have launched a site since ur write up. would be interesting to know how it went and how it is now. Sites often go revamps in initial years since lot of it is hit n trial.
For us, we have redone our site 3 times in last three years for we were always looking for something which dint show in final product. we have gotten closest to what we wanted in the current form. Sales and profitability of course is another ball game altogether

I appreciate your step. Online is the best medium to expand your business. You should create an online store as per your requirements. Please do some analysis and make a note on the features you want in your online store. Creating your own online store is the best way to make your visibility high on internet and promote your brand.
You can have numerous of custom features and need not to restrict your self with the limitations of any platform. I would prefer magento or custom PHP for your online store. This is very important to have traffic to your store after set it live.
You will have to implement some SEO practices like onpage SEO, link building, social media campaigning, Google Adwords etc. I would like to discuss in detail about your requirements and business goals. I will give you suggestions and tell you the whole structure of the ecommerce. I will appreciate if you share your contact in order to pace the conversation.
I am also available on Skype, hangout, Phone and will be glad to answer your queries.

The first step should be to refine your idea a bit and put it in a document or spreadsheet or hand sketched paper. Then list USPs of your product(s)/service(s) and your target audience.
Once you are ready with this, now you will need a seasoned ecommerce development company who will understand your idea, analyze it and craft a solution for implementing web technologies to convert it into a functional e-commerce platform.
Then would come the need of an experienced team of web engineers to design & develop your platform. Hosting, maintenance and marketing are ongoing tasks for running e-businesses.
