This is my take on public holidays.
I would like start with a reference,
we have a client in US, we are providing him services since last 2 years,
the one thing we know they are taking all of their public holidays like easter, halloween, christmas(and many others) so seriously and never miss that, you shall not expect any reply or intimation in this duration, same with another client in new zealand and australia. on top of that a good healthy and long enough vacation, which is most of the time they get paid with salary.
and I look on our side, we work 365 days, only those 12-14 days as public holidays, which are made as reference by thos MNCs and foriegn companies so they can utilise most of our resources, and get them selves good value for what they are paying.
Now question is we are country with 1.2 billion people, having more then the 100s of festivals, and not be able to celebrate even 10 of them? seriously, when I was in school, we were celebrating Vasant Panchmi(Those who dont know what is Vasant Panchmi can check here) Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Makar Sakranti, Dashera, and many other Important days, which we are not even noticing, forget celebrating.
and we do have public holidays for which we dont have anything to do with, what do you do on good friday (forgive me as it might hurt christian minority, but they are not more then 2.3% of indian population) 5-8 days vacation for chirstmas seriously(not in all the places but ive seen it many places) even in schools they are reducing diwali vacation so that they can accomodate christmas vacation (even on non convent schools), ? and same a like some others which are implied on indians and they are not be able to celebrate their own festivals.
On top of that there is fashion to call indian festival as humbag or andhshradhha, outdated, unorthodox, and sometimes even Qhutiyappa.
Those who are born indian but not know what is it to be an Indian, please read Duralabham Bharate Janma by savarkar. every indian festival and its parampara (disciples in traditional Vedic culture) is perfect science, every festival is making human life and living way more and more precious, that those foreign countries dont even know about. countries like german and france accept that their roots are from sanskrit and germans are far more one step they are doing lots of research on sanskrit and our vedas, whom this so called NRI, Well Educated Indians calls humbug.
with all due respect to other religions I want to ask a Question to all the aspiring enterprises and startups why do you sacrifice your own religious right to celebrate your festivals?
Is there any need to follow the public holidays as per those MNCs says 12 days a year as per their liking? why it would make you think that, this is the standard list? dont you think you shall modify this list according to your country and make it flexible for your employees?
We are NOESiS Pixel Art Pvt. Ltd. a small company with staff of 12, decided to not to follow this pattern so we have created our own list of holidays which covers holidays as per indian festivals, and staff’s religion. Following are a proposed List of holidays for our company.
