how much i want to take my shoes off and say…ok fine…thats enough…lets me sit back and enjoy the rest of my life in peace and happiness….but can this ever be possible ? i do think of this every other day but cannot decide which day will be my last day of work…it just keeps on getting postponed.
Is life only work ,work and work..? Can we ever take off our shoes and say ok …thats it .

Hi Vijay….regular jobs do have a sort of a compulsion ….but I meant to delve into the situation where after years of work ,one finally desires to go off work …maybe stay in the foothills of himalayas,or a chalet in the Swiss Alps….a retired life.. ….

I agree with all of you. Being entreprenur is not rosy and fulfilling all the time. Most of the days you want to work all the time. Can’t wait on Saturday evening for Monday morning and get back to office (Kinda metaphor, you dont have to go to office to work), wake up at midnight and try something bothering you for long time. These times you want to work forever and want to die at work station (like thespians want it on stage). It is highly satisfying and fulfilling.
Â
Then there are days where PMS kicks in (yes for men too), you are afraid to make calls, complete and send the proposals, can’t get out of bed even at 8 o’clock in morning and simply wants to retire but bank statement is not willing to allow that. What you do? laze around couple of days, procastinate, indulge in some serious self pity and self loathing. and then you are ready to go back to work.
Â
My whole point is you can take off shoes and enjoy life in rest and happiness and keep them on spend the life same way. You can afford both because you are the BOSS.
Â

Gaurang,,,,i kind of agree to what you have said.In fact thats what i think we all must follow whilst we are at the age when we ought to be working….Now that i have you at least agreeing to a temporary cessation of work…could you and others tell me if after we have worked for few decades ,could there be sometime in our lives when we can finally say to ourselves…Ok .i have worked enuf….so let me now relax and enjoy life .After all, those in jobs do retire ,don’t they….and we [those not in service] tend to go on and on and on ….

Hi Pankaj and all
Â
Well, I am not in that stage where i look for retirement (lol, still less than decade in work) and mostly in a job.
Â
But I want to ask, what are the top 3 reasons that your shoes are too sticky to remove. If i have to answer, i think it  the own networth not enough yet will be the top reason. And then this ‘enough’ is subjective again, and probably keeps upping everytime.
Â
Your views ?
pankaj khandelwal
Oh Yes,Munish ..you are absolutely right….its definitely subjective…but if one;s worked quite a few decades…and is wanting to sign off work…where’s the problem…but can we really do that is the question….or are we supposed to do that…cos life is just not work and work buddy…its relaxation and fun too.
Munish Goyal said:

‘feelings’ change with time too….so,this could be because they tend to become monotonous….

Pankaj, I have just done what you have written. I worked for 20+ straight years in 2 large advertising companies, held many leadership roles, in India and elsewhere, and I said to myself mid last year the things you wrote in your headline. Finally, in end December, I jumped off the corporate management airbus and am floating mid air right now. I have met some very interesting people in the last 2-3 months, picking up on lost habits like reading non-e-books, surfing the web like there is no tomorrow, discussing the world, business and community with passionate people, and am enjoying every minute of it.
Â
I get questions like “what are you going to do next” on a regular basis from people who car about me and I am enjoying telling each one of them “I do not know” with so much pride you would think I am sick.
Â
I agree with a lot of stuff people have said in reply to your post and I think they are all right, as are you, in tour thinking.
Munish Goyal
Hi Ravi
Â
Feels good to hear that. Actually i would like to say that everyone after some such long time feels strongly  about taking a long sabbatical.
Â
My uncle is a senior IAS officer, and after some 22 years in service, one day he was discussing with me his various thoughts on what to do next.. He had options like:
1. quit the prestigious job and be mid-air for a while
2. may be later join a private MNC, he had a very lucrative offer given. Many other civil servants do the same after long service or after retirement.
3. do some businessÂ
Â
This stage was there for some months, but then shoes were too sticky , lol so he decided to put on till the next such thought process arives.Â

hi Munish….yes, whether one does go in for ‘ quits’ or not is a big question ,but that the thought does come in is good to hear …I just wonder if one can really take the decision ,but as Ravi says ,he is enjoying every bit of his ‘no work’ decision….i am certain its not too difficult to quit as and when one feels ‘its been enuf ”

I jusst brushed through all the post….if one compare humans with machines…then work and fun …in Anushkas context is mechanical..one needs to break that monotony even in deriving fun…or work
Anushka Shroff said:

Hi Ashwin ,thanks for your views but would you want to say that ‘fun ‘ or ‘work’….both can become monotonous. If thats the case, then quitting work would be a great idea at a certain stage of life…but if ,as you say ,fun too gets monotonous….then its cross roads again at a later stage..or am i wrong in assuming what you want to say
Ashwin C Parulkar said:

Pankaj absolutely correct, well derived the meaning. there are many reasons surrounding the fun u derive
out of work or from pleasure..and no way it will repeat each time the same way..thts why one has to keep climbbing the ealier stimulus ..in work or fun

Ashwin…
How can it be mechanical ? when you’re enjoying your work which is so much fun ? 🙂
What is there to get so monotonous ?Â
We shud be happy we are blessed with so much work…as we are able ….we have the abilities…
There are people in this world who are without work and some dont have the abilities,…:)

Lets talk abt ur quote-
We shud be happy we are blessed with so much work…as we are able ….we have the abilities…
My thots are-
1.We shud be happy we are blessed with so much work…-Do you think th ‘so much work’ phenomenon remain same for all the time , take things like recession/melt downs, tech changes which is not in our hands
2.as we are able- again our abilities however we think,  goes in picks and valleys, imagine a person say ‘detected with HIGH colestroll or as simple as comes across  with a person with superior experiance/ knowledge and age
will it remain same
we have the abilities…- say if say a person works works and works and finds his weight completely out of contoll or his family life imbalance thn what
Â
How can it be mechanical ? when you’re enjoying your work which is so much fun ? 🙂
What is there to get so monotonous ? –
My thot- its scary if it doesnot become monotonous it may be the sign that it has indeed become monotonous, like pavlovs experiment – u know an experiment where the light goes on ..th dog sulivates and then gets a bread the cycle goes on
a person may be working from 10 to 10 ,is it that he is working hard and having fun? I think exhaution and errosion will take him over.
best
Ashwin

Hi Ashwin
My take on your views :
01.
Recession and melt downs are not in our control…Recession and melt down is an opportunity for creating more work..:) …actually coping up with recession distinguishes enterprenuers, leaderships ..etc  emerges us as winners from the crowd  and a platform for new growth……..
02.
This definitely is in our control….…Our fitness levels need to be high….and we shud take  care of our health…again it’s a balancing factor…..living a healthy lifestyle and following a healthy diet with excercising everyday..gets “No Cholestrol” ….
When the mind and body is fit…..anyone can work 16 hours a day..!
03.
Again Ashwin..It depends how to take “work” as ….
It cant get monotonous…if there is “Creativity”  in our “Work”…..Work is not only “Just work”…if we enjoy our work its fun…and never get exhausted ..it’s all in the mind…If you are passionate about your work…nothing takes you over….working hard is not always required..working smart is the key…!
04.
I mention the same thing….We need to balance our work and life…,then nothing goes out of control…& then nothing is scary  !!!!!
Â
To summarize…”Winners never quit and quitters never Win”…!
Regards

Hi Anushka…you do give thought provoking points .I just wanted to say that ,work is great till a certain age of any individual. After that age ,one tends to get physically slowed down and one does tend to have someone younger of the family taking care of the work…don’t you approve of someone stepping down from work at that period of his life..Even in services ,a certain age has been decided as retirement age.Look ,even at my age of 52 i’m looking forward to continuing to work but i do see a little bit of slowing down. Most of us do tend to complete our social obligations towards family et al by the sixties….why not relax then….or maybe earlier if every other aspect has been taken care of .
