I have faced this issue many times in life mostly when i try to work with someone of my age / higher than my age. Being a 22-year old, its a very serious issue.
1. If i hire someone who is significantly higher my age and from the same field (or other field). If i boss them to get work done, they start getting uncomfortable. If i try to be very friendly with them, they take things for granted.
2. I have tried working closely with friends of my age earlier. Most of the time results in a deadly catastrophe.
I have feeling that, you can’t afford to have a very close friendship with your employees.
It is not that i m not modest or just try to show off to people that i am the boss. But, i feel there are really too few people who respect modesty.

I don’t think it has anything to do with age. Just stick to your guns and learn how to quickly verify claims or assertions made by others.
Personally, I would prefer to have great colleagues become good friends, than great friends becoming good colleagues.
