Dear All,
Let me introduce myself, I am Sangamesh patil very much interested in entrepreneurship , currently working in a start-up BPO as Process Manager, but joined here 1year ago as system admin, Due to circumstances I had to handle both technical issues & 10 people team.
Now I got the confidence that I can run a small international call centre with 8-10 employees.. waiting for investors.
One of my known person called me 2 weeks back & said he has investor & planning to start a start-up IT firm, asked me to join & I can run the BPO process in night shift in his office. So I met with him few days back to discuss. He told me to handle the entire operations in the office.
Came to know that investors are from real estate field, they don’t know anything about IT or BPO.
Here are my confusions, need suggestions from you.
Should I join him or wait for some time start my own? If yes
Should I join as employee or Parter ( i am not required to invest money)
Should I take responsibility of entire office operations or only BPO domain?
What are the things I have to look into before joining?
Since 1 week I am in lot of confusion.
Waiting for your valuable suggestions
Thanks & regards,
Sangamesh Patil

Hi Sangamesh — What’s the business process (e.g., F&A, Customer Service etc.) you have experience in? Having been involved in many BPO and Shared Service Center deals/setup, and having worked closely with many BPO leaders, I can tell you BPO is very crowded and a tough industry to break into.
If I were you, I’d focus on your last question and think about things like:
1. What’s my industry + process focus, or what’s my competitive advantage? Why will a company/client pick my services vs. some other big player?
2. How and where would I get my first customer. In fact, ideal case would be a company already has a first customer in such industry.
3. How and where would I get my first 10 employees etc.

Hi Rishi,
Thanks for your reply.. I was expecting some more replies from Rodinhooders.
Its true that BPO is very crowded & tough industry..
In current company, there is a US process which I am handling, I even spoke with the client, he is ready to give the process if I start another centre,.
few employees has quit the job from current company due to salary issue, how about contacting them?
Now another problem is raised, current manager is requesting me not to quit as they need my support to run the process as company is running in loss. some management issues are also going on due to loss.
so now do I quit that job & join my friend or be there in current company till issues get solved.
waiting for suggestions..

So has the decision been taken ?
Just a small observation, your post implies you as the final person responsible for the BPO operations delivery. In parallel, the business is in a loss. Apart from this, the team is not satisfied with the salary, yet you believe you would be able to get part of the same team on board.
So am assuming that the money flow/profitability has been analysed for your new venture.

Sorry missed this one somehow.
Of course I’m not completely aware of specific details of your situation, but based on the things you mentioned, here’s what I’d do if I were you.
I’d at least make sure that I transition my role successfully to someone else within the current company, and give enough time to current company to adjust. Last thing I want to do is burn bridges or leave on a bad note. I’m sure you also understand that even if you get/take business of a customer from current company, there’s a lot of transition that needs to happen in a BPO scenario; and the only way you can make it happen seamless it by working together. Good luck!
