This week (1st April 2013), I urge you to do 2 things:
1. Unlearn what you have learnt.
For years and years I have heard “Wish for the Stars and the Moon”. Yeah, I know it’s a metaphor.
But, when I think about it now, it’s the STUPIDEST metaphor I’ve heard!
Less than 20 men have walked on the moon.
Many others have died reaching it.
I don’t know who has landed on other stars. Never met anyone, never will.
The concept is SILLY and impractical.
It’s not RELATABLE.
I say, choose ideals and goals that are attainable and things that can be done.
2. Wishing for the practical
This is the logical extension of aiming to do what you can possibly achieve.
Saying things like, “I wanna be the next Amazon of India” etc is fine, but start by becoming the Amazon of Ghatkopar if you can.
Learn to start wishing for practical milestones and then working towards reaching them.
For instance, I want to get a ‘Letter to the Editor in The Economist’ published again. (My last letter was published 18 years back, in September 1995 . I think it was a fluke)
I want to get a letter published again, and do so, I write as often as I can to The Editor (have written over 100 letters so far in the past 10 years) but to no avail.
I know I can do it. It is achievable. I just have to be better than the Prime Ministers, CEOs of Fortune 500 Companies and yes probably the most intelligent people on the planet to get ‘printed’ đ
It’s a practical YET challenging ambition and makes me:
– Believe it can be done
– Remember it everyday and drive myself to working towards it (vs. New Year resolutions that get forgotten after the first hangover).
So, Unlearn and Wish for the Practical!!
For a start – write down in the comments what you have unlearnt and what you want to do?

unlearning to learn again is a never ending process. this year, my notions of selfless vs selfish, give vs take (and the balance one needs to maintain in life) is probably what i’ve unlearnt the most!
p.s: lovely idea alok. thank you!
pps: though your Letter to the Editor in the Economist didn’t appear in the last year – you did write for their guest blog section!!!

Hi Alok Sir,
I have unlearnt a few points of my dream project :
1. Don’t present unpredictable numbers, they are your foes, they will ruin the company’s growth plan in reality.
2. Never be myopic always try to magnify the smallest words, as the terms & conditions of the business come in a very minute font.
What I will be doingÂ
1. reality check once in every quarter, to track the progress or decline.
2. Be self driven, and not search for belief from others. As believing in yourself is highly important, to run the company.
