What are dreams? I spend most of my time trying to arrange my life and clear out the clutter so that my dream can have room to live. But alas, it is easier said than done.
One of these days, I meet Sashi of English Vinglish. Sashi is a traditional housewife, quite conscious of the modern world she can’t match and yet nourishing a strong resolve within. She is also a crafter of much adored laddoos, and the beholder of a dream and she keeps doing what she does, because it’s the only thing she’s praised for. She dreams of being an ENTREPRENEUR…
How many of us know what we really want to do? How many of us think of doing what we really love to do? Sashi knows & she thinks of doing it too. She also has a strong desire to learn to speak English. On her trip to the USA, she enrolls for an English speaking course. While she masters the language & balances her chores, she makes few self discoveries too, and transforms into a more confident person. In the process, she realizes how vital her once seeming small dream had become.
Every ENTREPRENEUR is his or her own biggest fan.
It is said: “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win”. Sashi’s little victories, like navigating a turnstile at a subway station, seem like major highs in her life. What is so motivating about Sashi is her craziness about herself. A dreamer, she is able to recognize the exotic in her accidents and always prefers that over following a rule book. Sashi’s deftness helps her both ways- learning English and earning respect and making laddoos that in return shower her with love from the family. She rediscovers her self-respect not overnight, but over many such days & nights.
So, let each of us have a dream, and take tiny little steps & make small little choices to inch towards the transformation. It is the most important business we will run because it’s our lives and we need to take an active role in all the decisions.
Like it is in English Vinglish- “Enjoy, beshaque, befikr, bindaas!“
