I probably heard this song about 10 years ago, and even since, its lyrics have been stuck in my head:
Bankrobber – By The Clash
My daddy was a bank robber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money…. (contd at the end of the post)
I was just awestruck at how ‘inspiration’ had been distilled using a ‘Taboo’ profession!
I mean, when was the last time you ever told someone that your parents “were bank robbers”??!!

It is so easy to forget how our parents/guardians/teachers/family (with whom we grew up) inspired us and instead look for ‘icons’ (whom we have NEVER met nor heard) and say “Oh, X and Y inspire me….”
So, I decided to post this blog with a dual aspiration:
1) Get YOU to describe who inspired you (Daddy/Uncle/Mom) and HOW
2) Be a little poetic and write the answer in couple of rhymes!!
Here is my contribution:
My Dad was a Socks Maker,
Millions of feet did he dress,
Taught me – “Everything starts small”,
Big was just another size…
PLEASE contribute your small verse in the comments section below and we will add the best replies to the body of this post and also surprise some of you with some ‘money can’t buy rodinhood tees’!!

My daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money
Some is rich, and some is poor
That’s the way the world is
But I don’t believe in lying back
Sayin’ how bad your luck is
So we came to jazz it up
We never loved a shovel
Break your back to earn your pay
And don’t forget to grovel
My daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to take your money
But now
The old man spoke up in a bar
Said, “I never been in prison
A lifetime serving one machine
Is ten times worse than prison”
Imagine if all the boys in jail
Could get out now together
What do you think they’d want to say to us?
While we was being clever
Someday you’ll meet your rocking chair
‘Cos that’s where we’re spinning
There’s no point to wanna comb your hair
When it’s gray and thinning, yeah
Yeah, my daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money
So we came to jazz it up
We never loved a shovel
Break your back to earn your pay
And don’t forget to grovel, yeah
Get away, get away, get away
Get away, get away, get away
Get away
My daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way
And he loved to steal your money
Run rabbit run
Strike out boys, for the hills
I can find that hole in the wall
And I know that they never will
Daddy was a bankrobber
But he never hurt nobody
He just loved to live that way

Ahem this ain’t poetic
but me ain’t a poet
all I do is cook, travel, imagine
All this imagination
given to me by him
he is always there for me
He told me always
It’s all about Quality
If you have it you are the boss
Though he never trained me
Though he never scolded me
Though he never asked me to do it
He is the one
He is the buddy
He is my FATHER
I have had many more
But no one like him
So I dedicate this to him.

My mummy was a homemaker
Who couldn’t afford me some money
That day I decided to rob a bit
To join my school library
At my school she landed that day
Asking gently if I’d taken the money
Thanks to her forgiving nature that day
Today I am a writer as can be…

okie dokie – so here’s the daddy limerick i promised!!
i’m a dairyman’s daughter,
dairy scientist he is by profession,
word lover and poet by heart –
and that’s what I was taught!
to love words and use them diligently;
to help others, crack jokes and always smile
no matter how you feel inside 🙂
‘kaizen’ is his favorite concept –
and he rewards everyone who improves even just a bit!
so daddy’s girl I strive to be
read, write, laugh and encourage, just like he!
ps: capricorn dads rock!
🙂
pps: here’s where i plug-in a neat kaizen by amul 🙂
