Sensor in helmet starts the bike only when rider wears it

Hi,

Here’s an idea which might help reduce motorcycle accident deaths on the road.

What if a helmet has a sensor installed and only when the rider wears it, the motorcycle engine starts? – Thus forcing the rider to wear the helmet.

(I’m as such not a big supporter of forcing things on people, but this might just force people to make a habit out of wearing helmets).

But can a sensor be so accurate to know when the rider has worn the helmet? Or would it have to be that when the helmet is within a 2 metre radius of the engine, the motorcycle engine runs?

I even thought that maybe riders would just carry the helmet or attach it to a helmet holder on their bike, just so that it’s in the 2 metre radius of the engine, but my thought was that maybe if they’re forced to carry the helmet, the rider would figure that he might as well just wear it.

Here’s a clip made by O&M for Castrol & Bangalore Traffic Police in 2014, but I don’t think this actually became mainstream.

Let me know whether:

1) You’ve heard of something like this?
2) Is it technically possible?
3) What do you think of the idea?

You can reach out to me on Twitter @sumiitlakhutia or here on TRHS 🙂

Disclaimer: I don’t ride motorcycles or scooter, don’t know how to, so maybe I’m not getting the finer points of this 🙂

  1. Doesn’t make sense.

Its about creating awareness – not about making things compulsory.

Start fining riders heavily and they will all come in line
