Alok Kejriwal has been one of my biggest influencers. His thoughts about life & business have really resonated with me and have played a major role in the development of my venture: BeingMCuBE, which involves advising digital strategies to help emerging businesses differentiate themselves & grow sustainably. Basically trying to give meaningful, actionable advice in a really noisy field.
On Tuesday, 24th December 2013, I finally got the chance to meet Alok. It all happened by the power of asking nicely. 🙂
My initial reaction of meeting Alok was kind of weird. He was so nice to me that I wasn’t sure if he was being honest or sarcastic. That took a while to get sorted. It amazed me how someone who has already reached a stage in life, where I intend to be, was so candid. My heart-to-heart conversation with Alok revolved around a whole bunch of topics including: seeking his advice to help grow my venture, discussing about the e-commerce industry & life.
Our discussion about the e-commerce industry led to him talking about this awareness funnel.
We started discussing about his recent post about FlipKart’s revenue-growing but loss-generating business and how true it is that just 10% of the people truly care & know about the ‘real’ picture behind something. Be it e-commerce, digital media or anything!
This eventually led to us talking about life, as this awareness funnel holds true for a whole variety of areas. It was surprising how similar we are. Both of us tend to take distinctly different paths to reach our goals. We’re 2 ‘misfits’ who dare to be ourselves and are vocal about our opinions even though a bunch of them lead to us getting a ton of criticism. His advice to me was to be aloof from people who contribute no value to our lives and really focus our energy on the 10% of the people who are well-aware and have in-depth knowledge about our field and can help us grow as a person. On this note, he gave me the book: Autobiography of a Yogi by Paramahansa Yogananda.
My meeting with Alok, was an important one for a whole bunch of reasons. It felt awesome meeting Alok & getting to know him better. He’s a gem of a person & truly cares about helping others achieve their goals & make something meaningful of their lives. Very few people who’ve achieved what he has, tend to do that. I appreciate this about him & look forward to bumping into him in the future. 🙂
