Fun

Social media observations (and lessons to learn !)

One of the privileges of being a tech entrepreneur is that I get to use Facebook regularly (while claiming that it is merely part of my job).

Of course, there are ways and more ways to use Facebook.

For the vast majority of users, Facebook is just a fun means of keeping in touch with their friends and whiling away the time. For others, it is a way to reach out to a wide audience and propagate their ideas.

For a few (myself included), Facebook is a realtime social lab. I find it exceedingly interesting to observe how people interact and react with each other.

In this post, I’ll limit my observations to those of Alok Kejriwal and Vishal Gondal (who need no introduction here).

While both use social media to actively help and encourage their up and coming colleagues, their social strategies for doing so are (interestingly) almost diametrical opposites.

Alok is like a radio station – he accepts anyone as a friend, broadcasts his opinion to everyone, and just like a radio DJ, occasionally puts users on the line and features their requests.

Of course, to catch Alok’s attention, you do need “ring him up”.

Vishal is more like a closed circuit TV. He only accepts a limited number of friends (only people he has met in real life perhaps ?), but appears to keep close tabs on them. In his case, you don’t contact him – he’ll contact you.

Which strategy is more effective ? Let me know what you think 🙂
