The Indian technology industry got its start running call centers and doing low-level IT work for western firms. Then, in the 2000s, it started taking on higher-level IT tasks, offering management consulting services, and performing sophisticated R&D. Now there is another transition happening, one far more significant: a transition to development of innovative technology products. Instead of providing IT services as the big outsourcing companies do, a new breed of startups is developing high-value products based on intellectual property. The Indian industry group NASSCOMestimates that in 2008, the country’s software product revenues totaled $1.64 billion. It forecasts that this will grow to $11 billion per year by 2015.

Nasscom is the biggest source of BUNK info and intelligence I have ever come across. They make reports that are out of whack and have conferences that look like village melas. Just cant believe how they hoodwink their supporters to even survive!

Hmmm that’s interesting because I’ve always kind of felt smarmy about NASSCOM though I could never put my finger on it.

indian companies must develop products for india. This is the biggest obstacle and more of a mindset than a Real issue. If a company tries to get funded for a software product, capital is typically interested only if the market is the US, which means multi million dollar marketing budgets. I doubt if something like tally would have interested vc’s. Low installed base of pc’c is also an issue. However mobile stuff probably has enough installed base. And i doubt if nasscom can find their ass in the dark, forget forecasting industry revenues.

Now Indians have some money and some of the Indians are techy too (not on CV alone but really) …. The tech products are happening and its happening at a good pace but still somehow it is tough in India …
You need to good UI designer, you need to pay high, stocks don’t work ..
While making a product the hurdles are too many …. also our families are not supportive enough to give us good time for products … we are developing SEOAppy.com, it is not easy going the path ..
But product is the way to go ..
Thanks,
