For the past few days, in the late evening, Head Monk has been taking the Monks to the local cemetery. There, for almost three hours every day, the monks spend their time wandering in the chilly, desolate, sad place. It was not a pleasant experience for them.
Yesterday evening, the monks gathered once again to go to the cemetery. Sensei came to the stage and asked the gathering, “How many of you do NOT want to go to the cemetery and instead spend the evening enjoying hot tea and soup in the Monastery?”
Truthful Monk immediately raised his hand. Taking cue from him, all the other monks also raised their hands. Only Inquisitive Monk and Mischief Monk did not raise their hand.
Sensei slowly clapped three times and said, “Just as you do not want to visit a cold, unpleasant, local cemetery, I urge you not to spend time visiting the cemetery of your mind. Your old experiences, bad memories and past habits are buried there as mind-graves. There is no need to wander amongst them and bring them back to memory. The cemetery of our minds is the place where our past rests in peace. Instead, live in the warm, loving, cosy Monastery of our minds and celebrate our present!”
