What’s in a Name?

Hi Guys,

I was as usual browsing the Google Group of a Indian Startup Community; which unfortunately has become more or less a breeding ground for Recruiters & PR people; when I saw a post, the writer was asking for help for naming their startup. I felt bad for the poor entrepreneur; even gave him a few pointers but realized that it wasn’t the problem. The problem was something else; something more complex.

The startup name doesn’t necessarily have to be in sync with the prominent feature at all, e.g. Google, Apple or Twitter are totally not in sync with what they do that is Search, Computer & Micro Blogging respectively. I tried to reason myself with logic but realized it was too snobbish so I threw in some personal experience too. I explained that we are working on a SaaS start up which is targeted to Retail industry or basically to anyone who wants to operate in “online/offline retail mode”; we went through tons of names including keywords searches. nothing worked for us; we bought several very good domains but every time something was amiss; finally while attending a workshop & getting super bored I scribbled few names I liked & showed them to my co-founder; we immediately fell in love with one name which was available & sounded amazing too… You can call your start up with any name even Project X but unless you find a name that is of your liking don’t settle for second best.

I’m also into active domaineering & have an asset of over 3000 domains; basic point if you don’t love the way the name sounds you will never be happy. Buy the best domain that you can get… Oh & yea we call our start up StoreMonk; I felt I should ask you guys too; what is more important a cool name or a name that resonates the mission statement. the vision of the founder & a little bling thrown together. Do tell me what do you think?

  1. hey deepak,

i quite like StoreMonk! in any case two words joined together with 2 capital letters is my all time fav kinda branding!!!

imho, brandname RECALL is the most important aspect. whether you have a relevant meaning in sync with the product/service/mission or are just super cool (google) – it’s the stickiness that matters.

so ideally, cool & relevant that sticks!!! [sounds like a typical client brief, huh?!]

    all the best!
